  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

History...

cool thread, but here is a suggestion, this thread shouldn't have any possibility of posting reply, just be like a digital museum, only people from RED should post

OHHHOPS...I see you have done that already...

Why?

That's exactly what the other thread is for. Just for Jim to post on. This thread let's us discuss about it. Jim has answered many of or questions so far. Why not continue that?

and I think

was actually one of crucial Jim's inspiration the concept of DSMC (.

Trust me...I know.... Jim was on an airplane at 40,000 feet with over the middle of the ocean with no internet when the concept for the modular DSMC came to him.

I don't think some of you still understand that Jim isn't just a normal business man.. or a normal inventor. There are very few people on this planet that share the level of vision that Jim has.

Of all the incredible things I have experienced over the last 4 years... and there have been some incredible things... sitting beside Jim everyday and watching what comes out of him is at very the top of the list.

Lots of memories... this is a great one.

This shot was taken when we were shooting with Franky. You guys all know this shot.. its one of the most important ones from our history book. We would take a shot, then run over to Jim's desk and he would sit down and develop the color science. Graeme would be on the speakerphone, and Jim would type in a combination of numbers in various matrixes till it looked perfect.. then hand them off to Graeme. It was incredible to watch. That is still how it works to this day.

When everyone thinks " it's good enough " Jim is the first to dig deeper and push for better. There was a time when we would work until 4am till he couldn't keep our eyes open so he would crawl under his desk and sleep for a few hours... pop right out and get right back to it.

All the logos... Jim designed them himself. All the RED Stickers.. for the first year, Jim and I literally printed every single one of them out ourselves and cut them out and shipped them to our customers. I am not kidding. That's how much you guys mean to him. He wanted it to be personal.

None of this is because he is looking around looking at what everyone else is doing. The guy shot the first 20 years of Oakley ads.. every one of them.. he knows what he wants, and knows what is missing.

Quite Honestly.... Jim's most important contributions to this program have nothing to do with the size of his wallet.

The History thread, and the accompanying photos, are fantastic. I can't wait to be an owner and part of the family.

Jim

The history thread shows me possibly that for the 1st time in 4 years, you have some time to enjoy (like really enjoy) your creation.

Dunno if I am right or wrong. Doesn't matter. I just entertain the idea of you sitting there with all the images, a fat havana, taking a deep breath and actually have time to tell...

Cheers and Thanks!

No one documents their entire history, unless they plan on hanging around for a long time

Jarred, that is an awesome post!! Jim slept under his desk at one point?? I did that once, it sucks! Did he have a sleeping bag? :-)

Don't admire resources. Admire the SOURCE of the resources. Quite an inspiration you are, Jim and Co...

It brings me great joy to do the minute things I can do for you all.

No offense Sanjin, but I was inspired simply by what I wanted. Having shot myself for over 37 years... I knew what I wanted and what was missing. I didn't need Canon to tell me, they were part of the problem.

Jim

Jim, also no any offense and I didn't mean in that way that Canon inspired RED about a small camera that can shoot a high quality video but it was vice versa.

I claim that Canon saw here early enough what is going on and responded pretty fast just because it was easy to implement video in DSLR.

Also I tried to show my tracking the things of overall interest, intentions and development that was shawn here at the RED user forum in March/April 2008.

A small camera (although 2/3" and tethered to a computer) was already at the market (it was called SI 2K Mini and also was shot Slumdog Millionaare)

and it was just happened that I showed once here at the forum a footage that was shot on R1 and it had SI 2K and Canon DSLR in one frame.

Then it was just meter of time who will be first to arrive on the market with a product that looks like a DSLR and also can shoot a quality video.

Canon and other photo camera makers took a route of HD 1080p (mostly) with a line skipping,... to get video out of DSLR CMOS

and only RED took another way or actually only right approach to make it serious 5K camera that can shoot 5K, de-Bayer in full 4K resolution and ready for 4K big theater.

But also took them a couple of years to make it in a small body till December 2010 when the first EPIC was shipped.

I see the history in this way but of course that also I could be wrong.

And RED is with EPIC absolute winner here.

No Canon, Arri, Sony, Panavision, Silicon Imaging, Dalsa, Aaaton, Panasonic, etc... or who else.

Also history is written by the winners.

Straight from the heart....

absolutely.. He still works just as late, but he finally brought his motorhome and parked it (now) at the studio for him to crash in when it gets to quitting time.
