  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

High Speed Lens Shootout

Thank you all in advance for doing this. Really interested to see your results - fascinated to see how the k35s stack up. Wonder if you would add the new Canons, at least the 3 already available, to that test. It would be interesting to see the new canon primes vs. the 30 year-old ones.

Matt, I can supply Illumina, zeiss mkII superspeed , Ultra Primes, and a full range of nikon glass but it will have to be in nyc - i cant ship to CA

Thanks for the kind offer to make your lenses available Nathanial. The factory demo set of Illumina S35 T1.3/PL primes (18, 25, 35, 50, 85mm) will be there unless something bad happens on the way back from their last demo. I will be on hand to answer questions in my capacity as technical consultant to Luma Tech Inc., suppliers of the Illumina products.

Guys,

Confirmed four sets for the lens test Tuesday Jan 22nd and Wednesday Jan 23rd. Locations locked down. I've got several requests offering to help with the tests and I'd like to included everyone. Unfortunately space is limited at Duclos to ten spots which is more than enough to bump elbows in their efficient yet small space. RED Studios will be the creative test and I'll ask the team there how many spots they would feel comfortable opening up for Day Two.

So far we have confirmed four sets.

1. Zeiss Super Speeds MkII (18, 25, 35, 50, 85 all t1.3) Sponsor Will Keir
2. Illumina S35's ( 18, 24, 35, 50, 85 all t1.3) Sponsor Luma Tech Inc.
3. Optica Elite s35's ( 18, 24, 35, 50, 75 all t1.3) Sponsor Matt Uhry
4. CP.2 SuperSpeeds ( 35, 50, 85 all t1.5) Sponsor Matthew Duclos

With the addition of the K35s, we have a nice group of glass that complete in a similar priced market, 30-40k USD.

The Sponsor with the Leica's, S5i's and Master Primes, unfortunately, got swamped with work and the glass is booked on jobs. I'm working with the leaders of those teams to pull off a minor miracle but as it stands we don't have these sets to complete the testing.

I purpose we go forward full steam with the dates indicated and make a Test Two for the high end sets when they become available.

If anyone could help us with the following sets we could use the support. We got a great creative and technical team, just need a few more sponsors.

Leica's Summilux C Primes
Master Primes
Cooke S5i's.

We will get to these sets, it's just a matter of time.

Best.

Oh man. Really wanted to take a look at the Leicas. Damn. I'll get on the horn and see if anybody's aren't working.

I'm not giving up either, thanks Phil for looking out.

Yeah, those last three are THE reference for the industry, kind of important. Hope you guys can work it out.

Got a few things lined up. We should at least have a set of Master Primes or Leica's Summilux C Primes for the tests if all goes well. Possibly both.

The Cooke S5i look like a stretch at this point.

Did You try AbleCine NYC for the Master Primes?

Like many on here,I think this test would be so much more dynamic if you were able to include Canon L series or cineprimes. It would bridge the gap so well for us who own complete sets of L series lenses but are thinking about jumping ship.

Okay, we got the K35s and Master Primes.

Only missing the Leica's and S5is.

It's final. Fast Glass Cine Lens Test begins tomorrow.

Day One, Tuesday Jan 22nd - Creative Test at RED Studios Hollywood. Thanks so much to Jarred and Carrol for making this happen.
Day Two, Wednesday Jan 23rd - At Duclos Lenses. Thanks to Matt and Paul, very skill crew over there, should turn out great.

Looking forward to posting the results in the follow days, hopefully not weeks :) Matt Hayslett will lead the review posting and editing, Phil Holland will create a great BTS for us. Should give those new to these sets a good start into the world of high speed cine glass.

I might have left out a few folks with all the scheduling. If you wanted to be a part of the tests at RSH, e-mail me.

Best.

We got the Leica's too. 7/8, missed the S5i's this time around. No big deal :)

Well we were able to get every set minus the Cooke 5i's. We even shot the Canon Cine Primes and Canon L lenses alongside Illuminas, Elites, Masters, Leicas, K35's, Super Speeds, and CP.2 Super Speeds. As a bonus we happened to have a 50mm Leica Noctilux with Spacecam mount so we shot that one as well. Tomorrow will be the technical test at Duclos and will fill in all the info for these sets as a baseline comparison. Todays test was fun to see how the numbers pan out in a real world situation outside the lab.

Not giving anything away yet but day 1 was definitely interesting. Let's just say our test put a lot of stress on the lenses, more so than anything you would probably ever capture in a frame.

Shot in 5KFF 3:1 compression 320ISO @ 3200K.
