  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

High Speed Lens Shootout

Matt,

Glad you can make it with the Elites.

Clint, your BNCR might be our best option for the K35s. Do you have the mount / epic with a mount to bring?

Still looking for:

Leica Summilux C Primes

Illumina's

Cook S5i.

Kevon at CamTec has generously offer his set of Leica's, Cooke's S5's and K35s in PL. So we won't need to swap mounts now with Clint's BNCR set. Thanks for the offer Clint!

We just have to secure a date when the rental glass is not booked on a job, sometime before the 20th seems like it's going to work best.

Still looking for the Illumina's and nothings has come up, considering dropping them for these tests.

Like Will said,
We now have every set for the test except for the Illuminas. So if anyone knows of someone with a set please get them in contact with us. I really don't want to leave them out since we finally have a set of Optica Elite primes to test as well. Maybe FJS would be willing to ship a test set. But if we can't get a set soon, unfortunately they will not be included in this test.

Matt, I can supply Illumina, zeiss mkII superspeed , Ultra Primes, and a full range of nikon glass but it will have to be in nyc - i cant ship to CA

Thanks Nathaniel. Unfortunately we have everything lens wise here as well as Duclos to perform some tests and Red Studios Hollywood to shoot the practical tests. I think the NY group of guys was still interested in doing tests there as well. We just need a set of Illuminas here and haven't found anyone in the area yet. All our other sets are good to go except those. I hate to drop them from the test.

Any thoughts on my comments regarding making the tests examine performance at both S35mm sensor size and full 5k Epic sensor size? I think it is very important to acknowledge... not only because it would be fair to the lens manufacturers, but for those people who will read the results of this test and may or may not be shooting on a sensor bigger than S35mm. This would be all Red1 users, Epic 4k'ers, Scarlet Users, F5/F55/f35/f65,Alexa, C300, C100, Genesis, FS100, FS700, and other camera users. It's a big crowd and S35mm is a great format size despite larger and smaller options. I think it will be a mainstay for a long time and I would like to see it acknowledged.

I think performance at S35mm and performance at full 5k Epic are two different flavors and we should examine performance at these levels.

:)

Since we'll be able to extract the 4K crop (S35) from the 5K material I don't know if there's a reason to switch between formats during the test. We should be looking at sensor coverage though for the test when we have the lenses up on the projector.

Exactly. Not only that but I don't think there's time to do all the lens sets at both resolutions on set in a day. Shoot 5K, extract s35 in post. The lens projector should give an accurate idea for s35 and 5k coverage.

That's fine! I completely understand. If we can establish that we will indeed extract an accurate S35mm frame from the 5k and make an additional analysis from that, I'd be happy. I didn't mean that we would have to shoot two different tests.

Yeah definitely. You brought up a good idea that we might have originally overlooked. If were going to do this test we might as well do it right!

When specifically is this shootout happening and when could we expect to see the results?

Within the next 2 weeks for the test, results will follow. We can get up the test notes probably a couple of days after, but images and footage will take a while to prep and have ready.

Test is happening the week of the 14th-18th or the following 21st-25th. Just some scheduling that needs to be ironed out with the appropriate people.

You guys are going to love the write up! We'll get the results up as soon as possible for all to enjoy. Remember, this is a few friends and RUs getting together to test the premier fastest glass on the planet. It doesn't get much better than this. If all goes well, we'll move onto anamorphic's next round. We might unleash a great surprise, if Jarred allows it, for the creative tests at Red Studios... cross your fingers!

I have been a night shooter for the last 27 years. This test will answer a lot of questions for me. Greatly appreciated.
I currently own a set of Contax Zeiss 1.4's (35,50,85) would be great to see how they stack up against the CP.2's and vintage Super Speeds as well though.
I think a lot of people are fans of the Contax Zeiss, but not sure if their claims as being the same glass/coatings as the vintage SS's is really born out wide open....

Here's a real long shot: anyone 'in the know' got any idea if there's the slightest chance of some samples or prototypes of the Hawk/Vantage T1.0 primes being around...?

Mike

Would you guys like a hand for the test? When is this going down?

Still trying to coordinate 2 days that work to get our hands on every set to keep our results consistent and controlled. Getting closer to locking down dates and should have an answer mid week.

Ryan we have you down on the "test crew list" right now but will let you know a solid date soon. Hope you'll be able to make it.

Great! Would love to be there! Hope I can make it. Keep me informed via PM or my email address: RyanPatrickOHara(at)gmail(dot)com

The test is a go with all sets confirmed except Master Primes for:

Tuesday January 22nd Day One Techical Test at Duclos Lenses
Wednesday January 23rd Day Two Creative Test at Red Studios Hollywood.

If anyone can secure a set of Master Primes we might need a standby.
