  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Help A soldier out...

@Patrick
If you don't want to be challenged on bringing up your solider job as somehow a point that I should feel charitable toward - then don't bring it up. Other than having a Government job, what can you do with a free RED that any number of kids in school, who are trying to put together a career in the visual arts, will not do or are somehow less deserving of?

My point is this: don't do your job for me - do it for reasons of your own. It's clear you, and others in your industry, feel that I owe you something (my basic God given freedoms . . . or maybe a free camera) for having to luxury of 'listening to NPR, CNN, having rock hard man-buns while drinking Starbucks with my Antifa beta cuck snowflake buds'. LOL

To everyone who has commented and given me advice.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!! I know I'm a newbie here on the site and I have A LOT to learn. This community has been nothing but helpful and kind to me, even when we don't see eye to eye.

!!!!! UPDATE !!!!!!

I've found an alt. route to get my kit, and have pressed forward and is arriving in 4 days FRESH from red. Even though no one donated to my gofundme page, I am still forever greatfull for all your comments, and some even taking the time to look at it.
I look forward to picking everyone's brain on individual technique's and common practices on filming, and general use of THE AWESOME RED RAVEN!!!!!

I will be pulling down my Gofundme page, as I don't need it anymore.

AGAIN! THANK YOU ALL for your support and attention.

-Patrick Fougere

WOW... That's is soooo awesome , fist punch the air! Boo-yaaah!!! (not sure what your branch says... lol)...

I'm so happy for you and just absolutely love it when "like minded" individuals are minded to actually MAKE STUFF HAPPEN.

Hell yeah...

I'm so happy for you AND definitely best of best luck that anyone can have.

KUDOS to RED

Maybe they mail you out a HYDROGEN or three while you are out there..? :-) Will definitely be watching this space/your space.

Last time I knew my friends didn't DIE assaulting a OIL FACTORY. By your rational I we should all quit the Military and sing koom-bi-ya, go get man-buns, and drink starbucks. The only reason you think your civil liberty's are fought for on US soil is because EVERY branch keeps the people in this world who hate us away from your comfortable life style. Have you ever been to the middle east? You know they think we are infidels and want to cut our heads off right. And I'm not talking about the people here in the united states, I'm talking about downtown bagdad, Mosul, Talafar ect... This is not an insult to you, so please don't take it that way but, everything you said was very ignorant about the military's mission's.
...
I am so glad your off grid, and your lowering your carbon footprint. Stop listing to NPR, and watching CNN, and stop commenting on Military matters to which you know nothing about. Until you pick up a rifle, sign the dotted line, and wash blood and brain matter out of your UH-60 AFTER SOME ASSHOLE DETONATED A EXPLOSIVE VEST BECAUSE THEY THINK I'M AN INFIDEL. Then you have the right to tell me something... Till then please be mindful and selective about how you judge the Military please.

I don't want this to turn into a political debate, I don't give a F who you voted for, what political party your associated with, or if you swim in a bowl of jello naked. I came to talk about RED cameras, and politely ask for help from kind people if they felt inclined to help. If you have a problem with the Military / government then go start a movement. Join ANTIFA. Go protest in front of military bases. Go stand in a highway with a sign. IDGAF.....

Just take it somewhere else.

Patrick, I understand you feeling picked on by Zeb, but at least it is just one guy. Be thankful the military doesn't get the same disrespect we did during Viet Nam.

I remember coming home and on the long flight home from Cam Rhan Bay I decided to keep a low profile... we got news in Nam and knew what was going on stateside with all the protests and riots.

I remember feeling like I was in another man's country as I had to wear my uniform until I got home. I was maybe a little more at ease in the country I had just left. I felt unwanted here.

Then, at the end of a plane ride on my way home where we had to change planes, a young woman with a baby who sat next to me and with who not a word was exchanged during the flight, handed me her baby and said something like "here" as she got her carry on from the overhead bin. She didn't ask for her baby back until we finished deplaning.

She actually trusted me, the evil war mongering soldier, with her child. God I wish I had gotten her name or at least could remember her face.

She left an indelible mark on me.

I've looked into the cannon c100-c500 and they don't have the frame rate, dynamic range, how modular it is. I've looked for months on different DSLR cameras, BlackMagic, Sony, used cine cameras, etc... And I've found that Red is the best option. Please don't take this as a lash back on your comments. In fact THANK YOU for your suggestions, I will take them into consideration.

I've looked into this for years and I've decided Arri makes the best cameras ever, their highlight roll off, color science, and tonnes of other features just make them "the best", can someone please buy me an Arri Alexa LF? As nothing else is suitable for me that I could shoot on. K, thanks, bye.

No! The world doesn't work like that.

Your logic doesn't work if you say "Arri", and it doesn't work if you say "RED".

Personally I own Sony PMW-F3 and a BMPCC (plus half a dozen Panasonic mirrorless cameras, and three Nikon DSLRs, plus various old film cameras, a dozen action cameras, etc etc). Maaaybe if I get lucky and a lead I have plays out, I might be buying as well a RED ONE MX later this month.

Do I wish I had something better like say a RED Epic Dragon or a Sony F55 or a Panasonic Varicam LT? Of course I do!

But I have to do the best with the hand I'm dealt, and make the most with the resources I have now to pick what is appropriate for my current situation/needs. (of which a BMPCC/PMW-F3 is just fantastic! BMPCC does great raw/ProResHQ, and the Sony F3 I also get ProResHQ 10bit files out of it together with lots of other features such as SDI/genlock/timecode/swappable mounts/etc)

Heck, even if a person starts out with say a Canon C100 that is still totally acceptable, there are tonnes of people around the world still in 2018 making a good full time living with it! Ditto cameras like say the Panasonic GH5 (and same will be true with the GH5S when it ships soon), and many other cameras. Just buy what you can afford, be it a FS700, F3, C100, GH5S, or even a GH1! Then go shoot the hell out of it.

!!!!! UPDATE !!!!!!

What was your alternative route? I really hope it wasn't taking out a massive loan.

Maybe they'd stop hating the USA if they stopped invading them...

IMHO, the US Military protects multi-national corporate interests. The ACLU etc protect my personal freedoms, environment and civil rights. Real freedom isn't free - it's fought for in the courts and free press everyday. Not glamorous, but that's reality. The myth of the Military somehow protecting my personal freedoms is just that, a myth. Enforcing the Constitution or Bill of Rights is not their function at the most basic level. With bases in over 100 foreign countries it serves to project American Might throughout the world. By force if necessary. Not saying that's good or bad - just saying it has nothing to do with my personal freedoms and individual rights.

Once in a few hundred years (or sometimes more often) we need our freedoms protected in other ways than just in the courts.

But that is what the 2nd Amendment is for. Don't need any army to do that! (heck, that would be a BAD thing!)

I'd happily scale back the military to a little more than a coast guard.

I have no need for the Middle East and their oil. America has the capacity to lead the world with the next level of Energy Freedom. Let's get behind domestic sources of that freedom like Tesla, Sun Power and many others who are trying to get us to critical mass on self supply. I for one just went off grid on electrical with a 15kWh PV panel array and 3x Power Wall batteries for my studio. Like I said, fuck foreign sources of energy and the resulting need for the Military to protect those 'American Interests'. Looking forward to driving an EV car in the real near future.

Many many of those solar / E-car projects have massive massive levels of government funding from our taxes (looks like the wheels might already be coming off the Tesla company.... pun unintended! ha). Which is a gross misallocation of resources!

Let's not forget the failure and corruption that was Solyndra, thanks to government being blinded by the ideological pursuit of more solar power:

I do truly believe solar power has a massive role to play in the future, but these kinds of misallocation of funds isn't helpful for the economy.

Does the world work like you said David. No! Of course not. The world is made up of regular invasions, and a good garrantee in a hostile environment fur invasion, is something a little less than a coast gaurd. Makes it easy to end your civilisation as you know it, as so many had been before. The great war empires of the past just swept over other civilisations and peaceful neighbourhood. It's rather like saying eliminate the police and post a "few" security guards instead to protect from the bad people trying to extort.ans over run your neighbourhood. What is the point of bathing in here with stuff like that. Your way, even the cartels of Mexico could take your country over.

So, yes, the Nazis had plans to take over Canada and then move down into the United sates, this stuff goes on more than hundreds of years. The French tried to take over Europe and the Germans multiple times, and the Soviets took over Eastern Europe because the Allies were in western Europe to stop them. The soviet aim at one stage, was to take over the world, and without over militaries they could try. The two Islamic groups (really many) wanted to take over the world, even by provoking world war to do so. This is something that was being done in the past through the middle east and Eurasia. But more powerful forces stopped them. The US and collition forces.

Now, 5 kids and likely mortgaged up to the hilt, on even what is likely better than a fireman's pay, working full time and oversease, what do you think one can afford? Personally I would have found out of the Army had some sort of loan scheme or maybe even help buy it to be used over there. I would have come along and said this is what I want to do with it to provide a cause. Personally I wouldn't take cinema camera kit out to the desert in hostile environments, it's big, and you have to protect from sand and weather and keep it clean. Which, if you have a big lens kit, is a pain. If officially sanctioned and supported that's another thing, but on deployment away from a centralised position, that's work. Those are the sort of things to discuss.

I remember a freind of mine telling me. He lied about his age, deployed over to Vietnam and after he just got there, on his birthday, he was walking up to a cinema and a car bomber blew up the car as kids were coming out. He was picking up peices of the kids. That's the only time I saw him cry.

When he got back from vietnam he had protesters outside his house, his Uncle among them. The nicest guy fine many things fir the community, put himself
through night school to get a social workers qualification and with others started the Vietnam association. Now, the Australians were some of the freindliest nicest troops over there, no shock and awe, not baby killers, but they still got harrased. When my freind used to drive around the defence minister (latter priminister) he used to have these people acting demonically thronging the car, filled with outrage against all but their conduct. So, I'm used to the unreasoned debate this attracts. Been around many left wing extremists, and they are less fun, and unreasonable as, than the right wing extremists.

Lol Šabović, that was funny. I could go into a psychological joke about if you see yourself as a minion, but I won't.

The point of relationship here, marriage, is a shadow of how things really are in the spiritual. It is a fundamental of existence in Christianity. But people are trapped in making it all about themselves, their good.

Guys,

in balance, I do agree with all the corruption and power stuff supported by hard power. Better world is what we need. There are just better ways to do things. But the truth is the US stands on the shoulders of the rest of the world weighing it down, but somebody has too, and do you want the other alternative? It's the amount of weight and the direction of the rest of the body in leadership which is the issue. But seriously, your latte's, big houses, good lifestyle, cameras etc, are all supported and protected by the US military might. It is only a matter of how might is used, and how much is enough for safe keeping.

Lighten up guys...

Impossible to not be reminded of this episode of BoJack Horseman...

^^ (3 minute segment.)

Anyway I'm super happy That PF has kit in the field and maybe we wait for what he brings back in 'The can". I for one am looking forward to that!

I believe in Patrick and he comes across as a really sharp and funny guy that has "Depth", heart and an edge and imagination and competence in equal measure. I have full confidence he will make it work. AND best of luck to him. I have total confidence he would not be asking for this unless it was super relevant and I am also super confident that RED would not be doing this unless they felt it was super relevant and worthwhile. If I was as small time producer I'd probably be backing Patrick too. It's THE STORY... And I suspect where he is being posted is also super important too.

From the bottom of my heart and soul, Thank you.

When I was young and fresh in the military I never understood about Viet Nam. Then I watched documentary's on discovery, and talked to people who were there like yourself. Never have I ever felt so ashamed and angry of our history that we would treat returning veteran's like that...

Hearing the stories from Nam vets is never a direct match to the things I've experienced during war, but it's amazing how the circumstances of the story change but the core feeling's relate and match like a puzzle piece.

Loosing a friend, out with your buddies on shore leave, getting into trouble with some girl, out on patrol, that first time you hear a bullet go by your head, the smell..........

I am thankful that we have changed our ways about the Viet Nam vets, and have started to do what should have been done a long time ago.

I hope in my life I meet you. Where I can buy you a beer or 3 and swap stories that no one else could possibly understand.

God Bless you H. Dewey, and thank you

Thank you for the vote of confidence Eric, and I look forward to shairing what I film. I have some Idea's in my head to start, and might branch out.

Have you produced anything??? I would love to see it.

Really looking forward to what you bring.

Have I produced anything as a card carrying hat wearing producer... No.

(Apologies for lack of organization and coherence but it is an odd /circuitous path. ).

I have a small but promising R&D company about to launch a new mini smorgasbord of capabilities and products, but in the meantime it's a hungry little monster that eats giant bales of cash on a yearly basis lol. Mainly relevent to very high end VR applications and some key/niche cinematic applications. + Augmented reality and deeper applied imaging tech.

I grew up in the film industry as kid/teenager, father was a production designer and art director on movies like 2001 space odyssey, Empire Strikes back, or Dark Crystal or even Monty Python's Meaning of Life, and also several/ numerous war movies for film and television including Kellys Heros (he also worked on full Metal Jacket but that's a deeper more difficult story) . I have actually done a substantial chunk of uncredited work but my father (being x military: Born Hamburg 1930, then drafted 1950's in the USA Airforce (and become part of an illustration department ) and then became part of ABMA (Army ballistic missile Agency which later became NASA (at least that branch where he was head of "Future projects" on the artistic side; hence the 2001 "Gig"/break into the film business))... Was rather staunch and VERY German, although very proud to be an American citizen, (I grew up in the UK) he basically forbade me and my brother from going into the film business/"Flick business"... "VERBOTEN!!!" I was also sent to one of those British boarding schools that have you pretend to be soldiers from age 13 to 18 like ROTC in the USA, so I'm super thankful I have not been called up or actively had my arse shot at by an enemy, only by friends... My best friend in NM is X-bomb squad and disabled veteran, (he got partially blown up diffusing a bomb in a Kosovo super market even though he has been deployed all over active duty front line (as Bomb squad is usually the first to go in after initial "Occupation" as you know), so we get up to some fun/pretty carzy sh*t and always have a lot to talk about as well various projects on the go too. In the UK I had a lot of good friends from US armed forces stationed at RAF Mildenhall and Lakenheath. Especially the guys living off base we would go hunting in the "Fens".

Over the years I have had various opportunities to make a break for film and especially the documentary format (which I love and adore)... Last time I nearly went to the Film and television school (15 years ago) in London/Beaconsfield I had close colleagues say "Eric if you do that we will break your legs...". At exactly that moment when I was preparing to go to the London Film school I had an offer to do a Ph.D at Cambridge University to carry on my research... That's one of those things that comes out of the blue that changes the plans you make for your own life... So took the Offer of Ph.D. and shelved the film courses. Right now usefully engaged in other related disciplines. And frankly the documentary / film schools much prefer older people with real life experience (so @Patrick you are a good candidate there in terms of telling the stories that need to be told). Otherwise I'm rooted in the general area of "Media Technology". I'm 47 year old right now, happily re-married and two kids and maybe starting a new family too, seems to be the way these days that a family tree turn into an odd tangled up family bush.

So with the tech we are launching and also throwing ourselves at HYDROGEN the media possibilities means we have to engage a lot more on the active content and content development front... Big Time. So we also have partners here and there to help with that that are pretty well positioned ( and my brother also has a "Desk" at Pinewood (U.K. ) lol).

I have worked with numerous "Film people" and projects that were in the early development phases too so I am used to working with producers and also enjoy that stage of the process too. Right now the technical side pays the bills, and now we have to get progressively more creative, but looking forward to seeing other creative and brave individuals run with our tech too. :-)

So if we ever make serious 'Bank" I would definitely be interested in producing for sure. My father had to set me straight on what it is that producers do and he always stressed their creative contribution rather than the $ contribution. As far as "Producing" goes it does not seem any more risky than anything that I have been doing on the R&D front. You make some intuitive bets and gambles, some pay off and some don't... Something I can relate too.

Although my father is dead he always predicted that I would have something to do with Cinematography even though formerly I am "Banned" from going into the film industry as a career lol/ go figure?

I also have some rather what I think are a couple of special scripts I have been working on on and off that I feel are very worthwhile and unique but for those stories I have to wait for a couple of other family members to die also .. lol/not lol.

Always good to practice one's writing skills and collect lots and lots of notes, and make that a habit and always challenge oneself to be super observant and dig deep.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

@Patrick, there's a long tradition of professional cinematographers and even VFX folks that have come out of military graphics/film/media departments... So YOU are definitely in good company with that tradition.

Lol Šabović, that was funny. I could go into a psychological joke about if you see yourself as a minion, but I won't.

I have absolutely no problem with being my own minion, psyche me or not. That's because I'm my own Gru as well. :001_cool:

The point of relationship here, marriage, is a shadow of how things really are in the spiritual. It is a fundamental of existence in Christianity.

Spiritualizing the marriage? Got kids, Wayne (of Your own that is, those delivered by stork don't count)? :prrr:

But people are trapped in making it all about themselves, their good.

What do You mean by "trapped"? All is about the people. If people weren't selfcentered, people would be off of themselves, alienated, ex-centric. People would make themselves a marionettes, or puppets. Or minions...

What country is seriously going to invade the USA?

And if every house in America has an AR-15
And every fifth house has a 50 caliber sniper rifle
And every 20th house has a 50 Cal HMG
And every 50th house has a RPG
(this is why the 2nd Amendment exist)

Then who the hell ever has a chance on ever ever being able to overtake the whole of the USA?!

Ha!

You can invade . . . but can you manage what you invade? America getting invaded has been the fever dream of gun nuts for decades. Just take care of the boarders and roads boys. Not worried about a foreign army landing in Santa Monica

You can invade . . . but can you manage what you invade? America getting invaded has been the fever dream of gun nuts for decades. Just take care of the boarders and roads boys. Not worried about a foreign army landing in Santa Monica

Exactly, let the government take care of boards and roads. And not worry about invading other overseas countries!

If any one was to invade there would be millions of armed Americans eager to meet them (even more so if the 2nd Amendment rights are upheld).

I've seen Red Dawn, haven't seen the remake yet.

Read "Tomorrow, When the War Began" when I was a kid, a series of novels for teens, that was also made into a feature film. Very similar to Red Dawn, but set in Australia instead.

Oh wow, just discovered there is now a TV series too:

The next war will be cyber . . . and it started full throttle in 2015 with the weaponizing of Facebook and our other social media. It will end with whoever gets full on AI with a high powered quantum computer. If you can crack every password and walk through every firewall - you control the entire planet. Period. Stock markets, infrastructure, satellites, launch codes etc all can be hacked. 90%+ of all currency exists on computers only. Hack that - get paid a trillion dollars. The Russians are waaaay ahead of us on this score.

Guns, tanks and physical occupations of countries are going to be like buggy whips going forward. Not a career I would recommend to a young high school grad these days. But then if all the domestic jobs are offshored then what options does a young man really have?

Would love to see a movie script that takes a hard look at the current reality of our rear view mirror Gov 'leadership' contrasted by the coming Armageddon of cyber war and how it could be what ends the American world rule. Could be a spy thriller with Dragon Tattoo cyber punk nerds saving the day while the gungho jarheads and Generals have a bit of an existential crisis when they realize technology has made the ancient hero myth and physical warfare obsolete.

To be sure . . . . physical warfare will be obsolete very soon
