My name is Patrick Fougere. I am asking you to help me raise money for a Red Raven© Camera kit.

http://www.red.com/store/products/red-raven-camera-kit

First off let me thank you for taking the time to look at my Thread.

I’m a father of five, a 14-year veteran of two Active branches of the U.S. Arm Services and I’m currently serving in the Army National Guard that’s slotted to deploy in 2018.

For the past year I’ve submersed myself in everything I can learn about Videography, Cinematography, Audio production etc... With a little ingenuity, components from a metal scrap bin, and using what I had on hand. I created a full camera rig using a GoPro. While It does do the job, I am limited with what I can achieve.

90% of what I’ve filmed in the past year I haven’t posted publicly, because mostly I’m embarrassed by the video quality. (Military pride of standards I guess)

Here is an example of an Anime Con I went to with a friend.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kwso6lEQQoI

As you can see the Video quality is okay, but I would like to achieve better, and I believe this camera is the key.

As a father of five, with all the household bills included, it would take me years to save the money for the camera, and I feel that those would be lost experience years. If I’m able to achieve my goal of $14,000.00 I will be able to kickstart my life after the Military.

I am not solely relying on your kind donations,

Gofundme: https://www.gofundme.com/red-raven

I will continue to save on my end (with whatever I have left over after life takes its cut) to help achieve my goal.

Thank you for your time, and bless you.

-Patrick Fougere

Just tried and there is no Paypal option. :/

If I can help with a few suggestions:

You can get much better image quality with today's stills cameras and that is not much more than that GoPo.
Look up Sony A6300, it is dirt cheap now and gives fantastic bang for the buck. Years back we had to work with cameras costing ten to twenty times as much which gave crap footage compared to it. 5DMk2 footage has seen many cinema projections and this camera beats it in practically every aspect.

Your service has great opportunity for inspiration. Life writes stories. Bad things and the good things. Good things which inspire other good things and bad things which if properly processed can initiate the good things. Magic unfolds every day. In the street or at the other part of the world where men have to be brothers in arms. If you are intuitively drawn to cameras you likely have the potential to notice it and express it visually. You can start with a camera like that and start expressing your unique perspective of the world and develop your style and as you creatively grow Raven will land. :)

World needs more Creatives, good luck with the funding and in the long run.
I wish you a Red camera in your hands...

If you truly intend to kickstart a new career then getting other people to buy you a Red camera isn’t the way to do it.

Plenty of people even now still earning a solid living in this industry and paying their bills and mortgage with a £500 camera. I’ve seen enough shitty Raven, Epic and Alexa/Amira footage to know it isn’t the magic bullet or shortcut to learning your craft.

I would take a decent set of lights and a crappy camera over a great camera and no decent lights every time.

Hell, if you were in the UK I’d throw you my beat up crappy ‘sits on a shelf gathering dust’ 60D from 2010 as it is still capable of making money.

Do some courses. Learn your craft. The chisel doesn’t make the artist.

Great to hear you have ambitions, and I'm impressed you build your own stuff!

Having said that, a few things come to mind:
1) What do you actually want to be? a Cinematographer? in fiction? docs? or maybe Videographer in weddings, blogs?
2) You do realise that roughly 70-80% (if not more) of fiction film/TV being shot are all on rental equipment? You can rent a RED for small sum of money and shoot a project that showcase your abilities or even go to a rental house and first do tests with the camera.
3) I think that if it's your first camera and you're (for now) just shooting small videos with no lights, crew etc, maybe for personal use, just buy a Sony a7SII or Canon C100, and some lenses.
4) Raven kit with lenses and tripod and other AKS, will probably run closer to 20K IMHO.

Hope I'm helping in way.

Patrick, don't use your service as a crutch to get others to pay for something you want.

@PF LOVE your "Franken-rig".

1. HYDROGEN*

2. HYDROGEN + stabilizer.

3. HYDROGEN Modules down the line (+steady rig/stabilizer).

4. Second hand scarlet(s)? (frankly bulky by comparison and you will need a ton of other accessories).

When do you ship out/get deployed? (If that is not secret/sensitive?).

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

* I'm pretty sure Hydrogen "Platform/gear/add on stuff" was designed with these types of application in mind. Looks like it can eat a lot of dust, dirt and vibration, get mashed, dropped and stomped on pretty well and keep going. I.e. Titanium + Kevlar. AND waaaaaay more difficult to drop.

+ immersive 3d might actually be USEFUL for technical practical imaging and training applications specifically for in field military applications (Ultimately).

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

BTW I really liked your Voltron Video... It's really clear that you are able to engage people/direct... I really like some of the editing, and some of the shots show better "Out of the box" thinking (I personally love really low shots and wide angle shots)... It shows that you are "Thinking in the right ways". All of the other more technical "Stuff' you can easily learn later + iron out a few simple things. Shows a good eye and ability to engage either in front or behind the camera or engage your audience.

Interesting that with HYDROGEN there are all kinds of accessories that make it look more cinematic (in a functionally useful way) and still be quite light weight. In other words people you are trying to engage will take you seriously just by the look of the "Kit" in hand.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Last year I was pretty tapped out but pre-ordered a HYDROGEN... AND I knew full well at that moment I should have ordered six or eight of them... If I/we were not planning on doing serious development on that, then without hesitation I would give you my place in the queue or maybe seek to sponsor (in field military deployment... If allowed/assuming all is legit/not breaking rules and various sensible boundaries and also RULES that RED themselves may set without shooting myself in the foot + The manifest Documentary/HISTORIC record + recording formats ). I have to admit I have always been a sucker for old "Gunnery footage" and in field, REAL military footage from the earliest times of cinematography going back to WWI even (and before). In your case @PF (depending on where you are deployed) there is also going to be a real HUMAN story to tell, and that is your story to tell.

I could go on for hours about why a HYDROGEN (or a plurality of HYDROGENS) might be a better fit.

The other thing is for $14K you could a get a bunch of HYDROGENS and give them to members of your unit?

I'm pretty sure you have the capability to cobble together different lens accessories /rigs for HYDROGEN if pressed.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Having been divorced and having teenage kids in another state SKYPE has been a godsend... So depending on what HYDROGEN becomes the 3d/holo teleprescent thing with your KIDS might be really worth it too.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

RED channel/NEW social media, might be a good "Breakout" for you.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

As you know or will no doubt discover the battlefield is not two dimensional... And the field and so called battle space management is very three dimensional and multi temporal, but being in the field waaaaaay more so. I think 3d would be very engaging for that really put people in your boots/shoes.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Wobbly and shaky and jarring camera work was used to good affect on Black Hawk down which was pinched/lifted for the Battle star Galactica REBOOT and used to very good effect. So I think better camera motion/stabilization will really help, but also the percussive and jarring nature of being at a particular front (which is good/good visual and visceral communication).

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Having six or eight HHYDROGENS AND social media means you can tell a multi-stranded narrative from different perspectives and people's points of view. Not to get too airy fairly and "Deep" on the theory of what is "Truth". BUT the closest we can come in some cases is what is called a "Phenomenological" approach, where it is the multiple narratives that enable an almost "Holographic" truth, an interwoven set of narrative and lines woven into a "multidimensional" tapestry that is more open to interpretation and reinterpretation and in some sense may be more free from bias (as much as anyone can).

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I'll stop there/leave it there as I could go on for hours, days, weeks, and months on this particular goal/application.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

@PF hope you find a good fit and set of solutions for your goal/goals here...

Cheers,

Eric

Random notes:

Redundant systems: [Assuming hostile environments and the possibility of being stuck in the field for a considerable amount of time having only one $14K camera in the field is a BAD idea I think. HYDROGEN would allow you to have multiple cameras and cameras maybe in the hands of others than yourself. Even some jealous nit-wit may get his nose out of joint and devise a spiteful way that your camera gets taken away from you or broken/rendered non functional. Hey maybe two or three HYDROGENS staked three deep can stop a bullet :-) It IS made of Kevlar (not quite the same structure as a bullet proof jacket /flak jacket).

Remote uploads/protection against data loss:: I don't know how 'Deep" RED-Network will be or get but you may able to upload some of your imagery/footage so you don't have to go nearly insane keeping REDmags and hard drives and laptops/various storage media and all that intact in their field and elsewhere.

Weight + camera modules: Future possibility of small detachable cameras that can be mounted to pretty much anything in any way for S-3d/4 holo or regular 2d (pulled frames). Probably more flexible, useful and versatile than one bigger heavier more fragile camera YKWIM? I know what I'd be rather carrying around.

To be honest, you'd be better off with a Panasonic GH5 or Canon C100/200. Much more affordable and similar or better quality than Red Raven. Keep in mind that Raven is old tech (dragon) and doesn't fully resolve 4K resolution. It's going to look soft compared to other 4K cameras out there.

5DMk2 footage has seen many cinema projections and this camera beats it in practically every aspect..

I mostly agree with Hrvojoe's general point (that we have some amazing options at very low prices!), but I'd say go for the Panasonic G80/G85, it is even a little cheaper than the a6300 yet the Panasonic is the superior camera (no overheating, has IBIS, better UI, just to mention a few points).

4) Raven kit with lenses and tripod and other AKS, will probably run closer to 20K IMHO. .

What Oron said x100! (except my point about going for a Panasonic G80/G85 over an a7Smk2, as your budget is tight and Panasonic simply is better value)

Buying a camera body will be but a *TINY* amount of your total outlay!

Patrick, don't use your service as a crutch to get others to pay for something you want.

Agreed, it is a terrible look.

I've looked into the cannon c100-c500 and they don't have the frame rate, dynamic range, how modular it is. I've looked for months on different DSLR cameras, BlackMagic, Sony, used cine cameras, etc... And I've found that Red is the best option. Please don't take this as a lash back on your comments. In fact THANK YOU for your suggestions, I will take them into consideration.

I ship out in two weeks. I'VE LOOKED AT THE HYDROGEN!!! It looks BAAAADDDDD AAASSSSSSSSSS!!! Not quite what I'm looking for but I like where your head is at!

.....................wasn't using it as a crutch...........

I've NEVER asked for hand out's in my life. You don't know how DIFFICULT it was for me to even create a "gofundme" page and beg other's for their help. The reason for me bringing up my Military service was to give a snapshot of what my life is like, and how difficult it is sometimes. It also give people a chance to learn about me, and to know that I'm not some kind of scam artist....

Next time before you judge someone and accuse them of something, you might PM them first instead of doing it in public?

Thank you for your response!!! The first camera I was looking at was the Sony A7Sii, I was really digging the low sensitivity to dark exposure, and all its features. When I get my raven, I plan on producing some footage while I'm deployed and submitting it here on the site if everyone would like to see it.

THANK YOU for trying to donate to my cause. The fact that you tried and have the kindness to help, say's a lot about your charter as a person.

I have also said my peace on this topic. I have no bad blood towards you, and I respect your opinion. I do not agree with your assessment, but your entitled to what you think. As far as I am concerned the mater is closed. I'm not sure if you a Military hater, or an Ex-Military member who just hates to see a soldiers asking for help. Either way if you want to PM me further on this topic, I will be glad to read it and as you said "I'll be civil and it won't be a flame war."

To everyone who has commented and given me advice.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!! I know I'm a newbie here on the site and I have A LOT to learn. This community has been nothing but helpful and kind to me, even when we don't see eye to eye.

!!!!! UPDATE !!!!!!

I've found an alt. route to get my kit, and have pressed forward and is arriving in 4 days FRESH from red. Even though no one donated to my gofundme page, I am still forever greatfull for all your comments, and some even taking the time to look at it.
I look forward to picking everyone's brain on individual technique's and common practices on filming, and general use of THE AWESOME RED RAVEN!!!!!

I will be pulling down my Gofundme page, as I don't need it anymore.

AGAIN! THANK YOU ALL for your support and attention.

My bother in-law is a Fire Fighter EMS in a major urban city. Puts his life at risk every day to Save American citizens. Over the years he has sacrificed his health and well being for his job and has never once complained or asked for more. My Niece is an RN who also saves lives everyday without Super Bowl Half Time show fly overs glorifying her industry.
Unlike Military employees, they do not get discounts on any products or services and have to board the plane with the rest of us. Real tired of hearing about how I somehow owe something more to someone who voluntarily chooses to take a job in the Military. It's a job like any other job. Using that as a reason for me to donate to a random guy's expensive gear is, well, not what Fire Fighters and Nurses do.

Edit: and my wife is a teacher - another profession that gets zero love these days

Pactrick. That's actually nice for GoPro. Were you using a rig, codec/software enhancements.

What they guys say about some descent still camera (without stupid time limitations is true) even the BM Pocket, and the mini has people designing external control handles etc for it. But BM has just released a 4k mini ursa broadcast, for something a bit more serious at a cheaper price you can get secondhand broadcast lenses for. However, it is long rig with those lenses. But if you do look low end, controllability, rigs, sensor image and datarate (as well as no control lockout and reduced recording time) are important. Cameras which do 100mb/s h264 is the minimum for 4k, preferably 144mb/s minimum for 4kp50/60, but over 200-300mb/s is preferable.

But against what I and the guys said above, I'm going to suggest that you wait to see what is coming soon. The 1 inch Sony camcorders late last year give a nice image and that sensor should turn up in a Sony still. The Red hydrogen details should be coming soon, and hopefully, more BM cameras. And that 1 inch Sony sensor's technology hopefully will turn up in bigger sensors on other cameras.

A bit more exotic, is the Yi 4k+ with ribcage for cmount manual lens. But that sensor is a few years old, so I'm waiting to see if an updated version comes up. People have had the Yi running at higher than 4kp60 at 240mb/s. They also have a VR180 coming, so I'm waiting to see what sort of rig for lens might come out for that. There are some good lens rigs for phones too.

Whatever you do, stepping up from a GoPro to a cinema/broadcast camera is a big step which you might or might not find easy. So, consider how you want to grow through cameras. The camera itself on cinema, is only a smaller expense, you have to organise a computer for post and lens set and other equipment which will cost compared to the camera. A all in one prosumer has fixed zoom lens and likely a codec that computers/GPU graphics card supports in hardware. If you want to concentrate on cinema the higher you can go and the more money. But for local meat and vegetables jobs, the cons cameras may look.impressive, and takenam impressive time on post doing better video, but the prosumers are easier etc (frankly, I think the cheaper prosumers suck a bit image wise, until they get that tech in that 1 inch and don't over cook it. So, it's worth checking out the similar priced BM mini broadcast and whatever Red has or releases). Remember, unless you are doing high grade (like most of what these guys do) you want to setup well, point, shoot something well and good and move on in meat and veg local filming. That's what prosumer cameras were for.

Ahh, just noticed you got your kit. I wish you the best Pactrick.

Zeb, 5 kids and ageing, trying to reboot into a new discipline. I don't like this crowd funding either, but if somebody is proven genuine, with genuine aims, Idon't mind them asking, and maybe even helping, a little. But I would suggest that moderators ban/control non medical/big hardship soley personal gain (not of a greater cause/ambition) crowd funding here. And whatever they allow, they interview and verify the person and setup an crowd funding account with Red for this sort of Red equipment funding, so the money only gets spent there. After all, I would like my own twin helium vista 3D rig fully decked out, or at least a hydrogen rig, too. We will land up with a hundred requests the more people get helped. Which can Include a lot of non genuine ones.

Do some courses. Learn your craft. The chisel doesn’t make the artist.

But it sure can make a big mess..

But not as big as the one wielding it!

The rig I built from the ground up. I have a GoPro hero 4 modded out with a ribcage to accept C-mount lenses, a audio-technica shotgun mic connected to a tascam field recorder, a lilput HDMI monitor that connects directly to the GoPro H4, and is powered by 2x 12,000 Mh hour rechargeable battery packs, and to power the Lilput I had to get a 5v 2.5 to 12v step-up converter. The rig was created from old UH-60 BLACKHAWK parts I found in a metal scrap bin at the place I work at. With a little planing and a drill press, tap and die set, 30 trips to the hardware store, and 2 1/4-20 mount handles I got on Amazon, I created my shoulder rig.

I have seen some test footage on the newer DSLR camera's and they are impressive! But 4 major selling points sold me on a RED. MODULAR ABILITY, RAW FILES, FLEXIBILITY OF FRAME-RATE / COMPRESSION, AND DYNAMIC RANGE.

With the GoPro, I cannot go over 120 FPS without loosing quality, and suffer damn artifacts. The rig is light weight, and semi comfortable.

LMFAO!!!! You should have seen the look on some of the professional cinematographers at the Anime Con that me and my wife went to. When they saw my rig!!!!! They were in shock, amazed, confused, and semi impressed. They talked to be for 20 minutes on how I built it, and what all the components were. (but i digress)

I'm not new to the world of camera's, When I was young and going threw high school, I took Photography. For my 13th B-day my mother got me a Pentax P80 or something like that (35mm film), I made a dark room in the smaller bathroom and even had a enlarger to develop my prints. There I learned about shutter speed, film speed, aperture, depth of field etc... Everything that comes with owning a manual film camera. Then I moved to a junk ass consumer mini DV camcorder. And for the that time, it was top of the line in consumer camcorders...

Then I moved to the GoPro a few years later, and started learing about LOG, ISO, LUTS, SHUTTER ANGLE, AUDIO TIME CODE, LINEAR EDITING SOFTWARE, BLA BLA BLA ......

Then I hit a brick wall.

I found my GoPro couldn't do any of those things (it could do some of them sort of) and I was stuck. C-mount lenses are not the best quality glass, I stuck with a "Flat" profile in a GoPro, all the files were encoded and all the metadata was baked in.

Higher end DSLR's was the first place I started looking, but EVERY ONE of them were missing an aspect that I was looking for. If it wasn't shutter speed, it was compression, or... hell pick an aspect and it fell short. Plus for DSLR's that came close I was looking at spending 6K or so on a set up. So I spent months looking at Spec sheet, after spec sheet from Blackmagic (ursa, ursa mini, pocket cam), Sony, Arri, Cannon. And then I came across RED!!!!

As far as the glass for my RED, I will slowly build that as I go, and as for my computer (I build my own) I plan on updating the motherboard, upgrading the memory, processor, and putting in a Nvidia Titan Xp in it (3840 cuda cores) to run the rendering. If worse come's to worse, I can always use proxy files for editing and render out my project at 3K or 4K...

LOL hey look at it this way. If I utterly fail, the RED GEAR for SALE with have a new seller and get it for a good price!!!!

....................Actualy that's a sad thought.................

Thanks for your comments Wayne! Hopefully you and I can talk more.
