  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Help A soldier out...

I'm glad you did get what you needed. GoPros are shit. Sorry but they are! Nobody deserves to be stuck with those things. The great thing about having great equipment is that you don't allow yourself to make excuses if people don't like your output. But, equipment does matter, and everyone knows it, too.

I am really amazed at one or two comments here. Really arrogant. And smarmy. But thankfully most of us are grown-ups, and we don't let that crap ruin our day. You have my best wishes!

Ahh, just noticed you got your kit. I wish you the best Pactrick.

Zeb, 5 kids and ageing, trying to reboot into a new discipline. I don't like this crowd funding either, but if somebody is proven genuine, with genuine aims, Idon't mind them asking, and maybe even helping, a little. But I would suggest that moderators ban/control non medical/big hardship soley personal gain (not of a greater cause/ambition) crowd funding here. And whatever they allow, they interview and verify the person and setup an crowd funding account with Red for this sort of Red equipment funding, so the money only gets spent there. After all, I would like my own twin helium vista 3D rig fully decked out, or at least a hydrogen rig, too. We will land up with a hundred requests the more people get helped. Which can Include a lot of non genuine ones.

I wasn't trying to make anyone feel uncomfortable by my request, and that's why I put it in the "OFF TOPIC" category.

If you do start a crowd funding page for "twin helium vista 3D rig fully decked out" I will donate to it ;)

Yes, the camera market. Allways finding cameras good in some areas, bad in others, unless you pay an inflated price. Very bad. Has anybody made sure there is no anti trust issues anywhere in the industry as a whole?

That's why I've been hoping for a good deal from Red and BM, on models that serves both industries at the same time. The BM released on the first, seems to address it but I prefer a better sensor. It has video and raw mode. I'm going out and looking for a mini to man handle at this stage, to get a feel of it. But being a sick man without much time for filming. I prefer something smaller. If only hybrid liquid pro zoom lens were available for these bigger formats (the technology is now available, and I have bettering mind) I could fit something low profile on a bm mini sized camera and get enough broadcast or cinema quality.

The technology is around now for descent low light and high latitude performance. Hopefully this year we will see better cameras, with sensors more in line with some of heliums specs. But I'm still disappointed in cinema cameras.

By the way. I see you want higher framerate for action etc. So the pocket is definitely not in that range. Sorry for mentoining it. Been waiting for a better pocket for a while.

No, I'm only illustrating Patrick (though somebody probably owns me one). I wouldn't be able to use such a thing much anyway, that is why I'm more interested in hydrogen modules.

Thanks for the thoughts. But just pointing out we need a process around here to be careful. I've seen at least one blind request here before from a film student. But how do you know. That person was treated worse. Stuff, if a guy In a wheel chair came along who showed some flair for filming and wanted to do a documentary on the cause related to his disability, that had been virtually untouched, to get a GoPro or stills rig, that would be worth donating a little to. A film student that comes along, well he better be from the slums of Mexico, or like that, on an international student scholarship to fimschool in the US, with a good cause.

My bother in-law is a Fire Fighter EMS in a major urban city. Puts his life at risk every day to Save American citizens. Over the years he has sacrificed his health and well being for his job and has never once complained or asked for more. My Niece is an RN who also saves lives everyday without Super Bowl Half Time show fly overs glorifying her industry.
Unlike Military employees, they do not get discounts on any products or services and have to board the plane with the rest of us. Real tired of hearing about how I somehow owe something more to someone who voluntarily chooses to take a job in the Military. It's a job like any other job. Using that as a reason for me to donate to a random guy's expensive gear is, well, not what Fire Fighters and Nurses do.

Edit: and my wife is a teacher - another profession that gets zero love these days

Zeb,

Fist off next time you see them, Please tell them "Thank You, for what you do" from me please.

Your 110% correct!!!! (on some things in my opinion) Fire Fighter's, EMS, LEO's, Teachers. They don't get recognized as they should or paid as such!!!! They do save lives EVERYDAY!!! I as a service member when I am out in town and I see a LEO, or a Fire Fighter, I make a point to walk up to them and THANK them for what they do...

For the record I never said you owed me anything, It was a humble request to look at my gofundme page, and if you would like to- can donate.

Further more, THERE ARE A CRAP TON OF PLACES THAT OFFER FIRE FIGHTER'S, FIRST RESPONDER'S, LEO'S, ETC... discounts, and other services. And if I'm not mistaken a lot of software developers give DISCOUNTS to teachers for their products in different fields of study? Are you saying Teachers NEVER GET DISCOUNTS?

And as for the "Half Time Show fly overs" That isn't to glorify the military, its the military's way of expressing our patriotism for love of country and the american people to whom we took an oath to protect from all enemies foreign and domestic. People that volunteer to go oversea's- away from their family's (like me for 9 months) away from everything they love and hold dear. To go at the behest of the commander and chief that was voted in ( Bush, Obama, Trump- I've served under all of them), to do a job that they are told to do even if they don't want to (we can't quit our job if we don't like it- like your wife or brother in-law), and to make it worse they get "take home" pay of about 2.3K I think you'll find Teachers make more than that....

Did I bitch and complain that I deserve DISCOUNTS? nope....

Acutaly, 99% of the time I tell them that "That's okay, you don't need to do that please" and I TRY AND PAY FULL PRICE!!!! There is a store I go to before I go to work, and they have a policy that LEO'S, First Responder's and Military get their coffee free. That was the choice of the owner. I didn't ask for it. AND I DON'T ASK FOR IT.... "do you have military discounts?"

- you know.......... sometimes people are just nice, and they realize the things that people go threw and do nice things.

EDIT: To say joining the Military is like any other job is an ignorant thing to say...

Thats a great point!!! And I thought about that " how do I convey that I'm not a scam artist?" Pictures? My address? My life story? I agree with you. It's hard to weed out the fakes from the people who generally are asking for legitimate help.

Heck I've only been with the Reduser.net community for a few months and I've seen scam product sale's. Actualy just today I was looking threw "RED GEAR" for sale topic page (I was pricing out minimag media) and came across a thread that the guy posting mags for sale used images ripped from a ebay page.

Well maybe me posting "help a soldier out..." thread, drives a policy change here for the better or worse.

----- I would still donate to your gear.....----- =)

at this point I'm a little tapped out, I could only donate- 20$ *shrug*

I agree about the firefighters particularly. It's disgusting how they get paid there. Over here they get descent pay.

But guys, I thought you were both going to drop that stuff. No use starting something up. I can beat up Zeb all on my own if he misses a point, I'm an outside observer (UN style).

For what I'm trying to do with it,... ya it is shit. BUT HEY!!!! When you got lemon's, make lemon aid..... In my case it was lemon aid without sugar..... *yuck*

just so you guys know I'm not yanking your chain about me being in the military:

here are some pictures of me In North Fort Hood, TX. Chillin in my rack waiting to ship off oversea's

Patrick. Nope, I'm not asking for donation for myself in that respect. It took me nearly over a decade to even ask for people to physically personally help me due to my health I think. Sometimes I get people spontaneously offer to help me, but rarely ever do, that's what I call a scam artist. I'm more about a cause, and if I could do it myself realistically, I likely wouldn't ask for help with that. That's the exception, to be able to help other's. Otherwise it is business, as Ketch was talking about. The ability for them to be rewarded for their investment. But things have been so bleak, I've considered cried funding to start a company to do good, often through figuring out advising and designing better things (rather than the market ripoffs, of half baked designs to make more money off of people, poorer people). I've softened, now I might even be able to consider selling a special cherry tomatoes rich person fir an enormous price in order to use the money towards greater good for people). I've considered, if I eventually make good money, to invest it in making quality affordable appartments (mace cheaply and durably, of 40 years low maintenance) for well paid singles and couples, to use the income to provide housing for poorer families. Why should the rich make all the money from other rich people to make themselves richer. There is good money to be made off the rich, to redistribute back to the poor. I could charge 2/3rds the price of a nice apartment in, socially, a great environment, that was much cheaper to build (the design gives good durable quality value cheaper, plus it's paid for from profits business at 0% interest), to subsidise housing for the working poor. Now, that's progress. I know it niave, but there are many such things that could be done. So, that is some of my ambition, if make such money. At first it would fund further business projects to establish the business (it is high price high rewards) and the money could be used for other causes too.

Damn I love where your head's at!!!!

I was thinking that last month when I was driving in a car to work- "what would I do if I won the lottery?" *I had just bought a poweball ticket =)* and I thought about building a community housing complex for people who are low income and help out my community. Giving to my local school's, and my church were big ones also. THEN A NEW RED WEAPON FOR MYSELF!!! LOL

God has his own plan. He doesn't need our money, but wants our relationship, co-operation and obedience. The money does come into it, I think operating things down here. If we are supposed to love one another but we can't be bothered to pay to support one another, and institutions of love.

The thing about using winnings to do apartments for the rich, it can help to buy more or setup for the poor. But over here. We went from the most affordable top country to least for housing. So, even a one bed room apartment my freind has goes for over $300 a weak, and she is not well off, and this is not really pricey. A house used to be $200 15 years ago. Interest rates haven't gone up, but there is real latitude for profit if paid up front. But of course, we are unlikely to win the lottery. :)

But I'm very interested in charities and private collectives buying land and building to live in. I think it has real potential to help the shortage over here. The thing is, with sweet heart deals, government fir one, can allow cheap land to be bought and used. The issue is transport and jobs, that is the constrictot. So, you need to provide jobs, so land development for that too. But the his happens anyway, and they need workers, so you can co-locate. Helps both sides.

A word of warning. People which are real issues, will cause more trouble and cost a lot. It should be the government's job to look after them. They can really infringe on community and affordability. Really not good. Frankly concrete numbers and metal toilets territory unfortunately, as they can really wreck things. But the law is real counterproductive for community values in some ways. However, it would be really hard to get the government over there to find the programs needed to fix them up and teach them. I've written a solutions Inc time ago I think, but can't remember it. Win win situations is what is needed, but unfortunately done people want to win too much and the other side loose, even though they are more wrong.

My wife spends over $1000/y on basic classroom supplies. Our military pays the NFL and a variety of other sports and Gaming (COD etc) operations millions for co-branding as a recruitment tool. Hollywood is also now in the business of recruitment with dark money being paid to promote scripts and themes that show a gung-ho military shoot 'em up resolution to every conflict. Captain America etc. If you want a RED then buy it with the money you earn from working your way up. There is no entitlement for anything else from my view.

Patrick, I recall reading once about there being a production company of some sort that catered to vets, especially ones who had disabilities, learning shooting and working on film projects. Don't know if that still exists but if so, maybe you could reach out to them and find like minded military personnel to swap notes with.

I served in the military, in a war zone but in a pretty secure environment. When people learn of my service they often thank me for my service. As I was seldom in harm's way, I am sort of embarrassed by that. My stock response is: And thank you and yours for paying the taxes that funded my service.

Hoping that my response drives home to them that the military and citizenry are a team.

But I admire you for trying to take charge of your situation by putting up the gofundme page. I tried to do the same sort of thing to get funding for a movie I've written. Got zero takers. :) But at least I wasn't just sitting on my hands doing nothing. The good thing about putting up something like that is that you are just putting out a "product", even if it is just the opportunity to feel good for helping someone out. People don't have to "buy" if they don't want to.

You don't think that the Military spend's money on advertising? Or paying NFL, NHL, NBA players to help promote the army, air force, marines, navy, national guard? I hate to tell you that Military advertising has been going on sense WWI.

Like tobacco in the movie industry, it has indeed. Both equally productive uses of our nations resources and both target the same young, impressionable demographic with sexy images of conquest and macho glory. In marketing their product, both equally disingenuous resulting in great harm to our nations youth and future finances.

IMHO, the US Military protects multi-national corporate interests. The ACLU etc protect my personal freedoms, environment and civil rights. Real freedom isn't free - it's fought for in the courts and free press everyday. Not glamorous, but that's reality. The myth of the Military somehow protecting my personal freedoms is just that, a myth. Enforcing the Constitution or Bill of Rights is not their function at the most basic level. With bases in over 100 foreign countries it serves to project American Might throughout the world. By force if necessary. Not saying that's good or bad - just saying it has nothing to do with my personal freedoms and individual rights. It has everything to do with making sure Goldman Sachs investments pay off.

I thank those nurses, firemen, coast guard, beat cops, park rangers, border patrol, teachers, social workers and others who sacrifice and persevere everyday to make our great nation a little bit better each day here at home. With little to no real support from our Gov other than in speeches. The Military needs no more special treatment or resources - that's for sure. The last war our Military actually won: WWII, which was pretty much won by the Russian's on the European side. Google it.

I have no need for the Middle East and their oil. America has the capacity to lead the world with the next level of Energy Freedom. Let's get behind domestic sources of that freedom like Tesla, Sun Power and many others who are trying to get us to critical mass on self supply. I for one just went off grid on electrical with a 15kWh PV panel array and 3x Power Wall batteries for my studio. Like I said, fuck foreign sources of energy and the resulting need for the Military to protect those 'American Interests'. Looking forward to driving an EV car in the real near future.

BTW: my RED cameras are solar powered . . . actually, all my electrical gear is now solar powered. My local utility generates 50% of their power by burning oil. Not for me anymore. Imagine how different our nation's priorities would be if we didn't need foreign oil . . .

Last time I knew my friends didn't DIE assaulting a OIL FACTORY. By your rational I we should all quit the Military and sing koom-bi-ya, go get man-buns, and drink starbucks. The only reason you think your civil liberty's are fought for on US soil is because EVERY branch keeps the people in this world who hate us away from your comfortable life style. Have you ever been to the middle east? You know they think we are infidels and want to cut our heads off right. And I'm not talking about the people here in the united states, I'm talking about downtown bagdad, Mosul, Talafar ect... This is not an insult to you, so please don't take it that way but, everything you said was very ignorant about the military's mission's.

ALL the organisations you've described are state run / controlled and have nothing to do with the federal government. If you have a problem with how they are being treated then, THAT'S THE STATES PROBLEM. SO FIX IT.

I am so glad your off grid, and your lowering your carbon footprint. Stop listing to NPR, and watching CNN, and stop commenting on Military matters to which you know nothing about. Until you pick up a rifle, sign the dotted line, and wash blood and brain matter out of your UH-60 AFTER SOME ASSHOLE DETONATED A EXPLOSIVE VEST BECAUSE THEY THINK I'M AN INFIDEL. Then you have the right to tell me something... Till then please be mindful and selective about how you judge the Military please.

I don't want this to turn into a political debate, I don't give a F who you voted for, what political party your associated with, or if you swim in a bowl of jello naked. I came to talk about RED cameras, and politely ask for help from kind people if they felt inclined to help. If you have a problem with the Military / government then go start a movement. Join ANTIFA. Go protest in front of military bases. Go stand in a highway with a sign. IDGAF.....

Just take it somewhere else.

Guys, you both have points. There are negatives too, but some wars, and to an extent, the US military, does prevent better values being overwhelmed. Let's forget it.
