  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GROUP PURCHASE - 3ware Sidecar RAID Solution

You need to download the beta driver.

http://www.3ware.com/KB/article.aspx?id=15351

Working well for me, hope this helps.

Jim

Jim-
Thanks for that tip. Do you remember if you downloaded the complete codeset or the driver? (or if there's a difference for that matter). Just tried installing the complete codeset without any luck so now im downloading just the driver. I think these are the same things as they are both 209mb and have the same file name.

TIM[/QUOTE]

No problem Tim. The notes say to get the complete set, which is what I did. Let me know if it works for you. If not, I still have the complete set and can FTP it to you if needed.

PM me if you need it.

Cheers,

Jim

Try reinstalling. If I remember right, mine didn't recognize it first time, but did when I reinstalled over the top.

Good luck!

Wish that was the case. Im beginning to think the problem runs deeper. Tried almost everything and nothing seems to work. Can't get the OS to recognize the card.

Finally returned both Sidecar units today. 3ware kept telling me that the fix was to be expected "by the end of the week" or "tomorrow" or "almost there"...then it turned into "nothing else I can do" "the engineers have their priorities"....anyway, I never get my unit working, sat around for more than 3 weeks waiting and wishing, holding my breath.

Beware if you're on a Intel Mac running 10.5.4 or later. Make sure they have a working driver before you buy.

Going with G-Technology's G-Speed es.

I am looking at building a Hakintosh and using the sidecar.
Who else besides Jim have been using it with 10.5.4 with no problems?

Thanks

If you're using an Intel chip (I assume you are since you're building a Hakintosh) then you're probably in trouble for now. You have to wait until they fix their driver problem.

I was continually told it would be "around the corner," or "expected by the end of the week," but, 3 frustrating weeks later, it never showed up. And, from my understanding it wasn't that high of a priority on the engineer's list of things to do....

My only problem is not to be able to launch bootcamp with the PCI card of the sidecar in the Mac.
It is fast and I have made some tests (hot extracting drive, rebuild the array,...) it seems very good. A little bit noisy, but I am sure the DD are well cooled.
When something is wrong, the sidecar send you an email ! That is great.
Ah, another very little thing : i don't know how improve the delay for the HD to get sleepy. It takes something like 5 minutes. I think it could be more.

Everyone, I have been getting some calls regarding our Leopard support and thought it would be worthwhile to post this link. We do have beta drive for this using our Sidecar that is referenced below. I am still working with engineering on getting the Bootcamp support released so it should be soon (fingers crossed). ;)

Hello,
It will work but it is best to used matched drive for maximum speed and reliability.

I just wanted to mention I love both of mine and wanted to point out a couple of great deals on these.
Tiger Direct has them for $199 and there is one on eBay new for $165.

Hello,

I just got my 3ware. I am not sure if I am doing everything right and I'd like some help, because this is the first time I set up a RAID0. I apologize for my newbie questions.

I installed 4 Hitachi hardrives 720GB 7200rpm
I installed the RAID card. I installed the software and in the Browser I set it up as RAID0.

Then I went to disk utility and I saw the disk there. I Erased it, so now I have a 2.7GB hardrive in there. Would be possible with future firmware updates to install 1tb hardrives?

So now I have the Raid0 set, but when I go and try AJA system test, I am getting very low read speed.

[EDIT]: It was doing a verification. So I stopped it and now the speed test is much faster. It is giving me Write 420 MB/s and 264 Mb Read . Is this speed normal with the Raid0?[EDIT]

Also I assume that because the RAID acts as 1 internal hardrive, and because there is no Eject button, If I want to shut it down, I would have to shut down the computer and then switch it off. Right?

Thanks for your help.

You can put 1TB instead of 720 when you want. My sidecar runs 4 samsung 1T since 4 or 5 monthes in Raid 5.
420 MB/s and 264 Mb Read --> You think it is only "not bad" ?:sarcasm:
In Raid 5, it is a little bit slower but enough for all my needs.
For the backup, i have put an inexpensive external 2x1,5T in raid 0 mode

Quite unfortunate. In the 3ware website states 720 GB, so I just bought 4 720. But I much rather use 1 TB. Well, what can I do. It would be nice if that is specified in the website so it doesn't lean to confusions.

I guess those speeds were good. But since I was getting 420 write, I wanted to get 420 Read. :innocent:

Also another stupid question: My system is set up as RAID0. I can't just take 1 hardrive out, and the stuck another one and rebuilt. Right? That would cause to loos all the data, right?

I usually just put my Sidecar drive in the trash and then turn the switch off. If I need it again later, all I need to do is to power it up and restart the Mac. You can also open the management page and rescan the controller and it'll come back up, but I prefer the restart and it only takes a few seconds.

My 2¢...

BTW... the reason why the 3ware site only mentions the 750 GB drives is probably because those were the largest ones available at the time of writing. Nowhere there is a suggestion that 750 GB is a hard hardware/software limitation. My Sidecar has four 1TB drives and it works fine. My setup is similar to Olivier's.

What card are you guys using with the Sidecar?
