  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: Budget CRI 95 LED Strip Lights

I remember ordering variable controllers. . . I don't remember ordering power supplies. Was that part of the package???

Thanks.

Stephen

Larger power supplies seem to have fans most of the time, so being able to connect multiple power supplies in parallel might be something interesting to consider too... Like multiple 150W power supplies, which are not too big and are fanless (I'm using one right now).

You don't ever want to run power supplies in parallel unless you have special power supplies that explicitly support it. Otherwise bad things will happen (think exploding power supply).

I'm also wondering how we can power "up to 4 channels at 10 amps"... can we connect more than one power supply to the controller?

You're best off buying a single 480W (or higher) power supply.

A good fan cooled option is a Mean Well SE-600-12 (50A @ 12V), around $91 USD:

A silent fanless power supply will cost a lot more as it has to have good heat sinks and be much more efficient to reduce the amount of waste heat.

If you are NOT using the controller and want to power multiple strips, then a good fanless option is the Mean Well HLG-600H-12B (480W 40A, around $220 USD):

http://www.meanwell.com/webapp/product/search.aspx?prod=HLG-600H

(this has built in dimming and power protection).

If you ARE using the controller, a good fanless option is the Mean Well HEP-600-12 (480W 40A, around $220 USD):

http://www.meanwell.com/webapp/product/search.aspx?prod=HEP-600

(this doesn't have the power protection which may interfere with the dimming function of the controller)

Great Emmanuel, thanks for the links, that 480W fanless one seems to be pretty interesting ! And the price is still decent if you consider it will be able to power so many strips at once. That would allow to build a really big fixture.

Yeah, the price isn't too bad considering the quality and value of what you are powering! BTW, I changed the links above as the fanless model I mentioned may lead to compatibility problems with the controller as the power supply has special circuitry that limits the current after start up to protect the strip.

(this isn't all of them)

It's become a family affair... Since I'm currently overseas for my film, my sister has been getting everything together and sent off to the fulfillment company. She finished barcoding and organizing the last of the lights yesterday (12 cases). They will be picked up tomorrow. She is now bagging up, literally, hundreds and hundreds of connector kits. She had to bring in my mom, on mother's day no less, for reinforcements. So, yeah... I owe them big :)

Assuming there are no delays in customs, I will have the final sample controllers tomorrow. They are in the country now. I will test them immediately as soon as they are in my hands.

We still need to find buyers for more controllers and we are doing a small bulk run of more lights now. If you want more, PM me ASAP.

The finish line is fast approaching! Very excited.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great work Brandon.

Brandon - what's going on in terms of UK/EU deliveries?

Using fulfillment is going to be a PITA - as it'll add lots of cost (duty etc)... originally, EU stuff was going to be sent differently - now, with it all coming from the USA, there's going to be a big expense hit.

Maybe mail and we can discuss.

Fulfillment is only for US orders. Don't worry.

Sorry to beat a dead horse but to power two of the variable strips what kind of power supply do I need? Size wise. Thanks !
Also I'm starting to think if I want to power them off of a battery I probably won't be able to power two strips?...

Hi brandon, did you get my latest PM?

You can easily power them with a deep-cycle lead acid battery (like a boat battery). For example, a battery like http://www.trojanbattery.com/product/scs150/ can run for 150 minutes @25Amps (two variable strips at full brightness should be around 16A draw).

You will want to dim the strips to not burn them out though as the voltage will be over 12V and up to 13.8V if you are charging the battery at the same time as using it. A better solution would be if there are any battery boxes (like for camping) that can give (high current) regulated 12V outputs.

(edited): I just found a high current boost-buck converter that you could connect to a battery to give you a regulated output for your LEDs (I haven't tried, so no idea how reliable it is):

I highly doubt the LEDs are going to give a shit about 13 volts. I run them straight on a hot AB mount battery all the time and those can be close to 16v when full up. Don't over think it. "12v" is usualy 13-13.8 or so. Dump electricity on the leds. Leds make photons. Everyone is happy.
