  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: Budget CRI 95 LED Strip Lights

Will the new variable controllers power off of D-taps?

Secondly, I've ordered six variable rolls, but only four controllers. I believe I can run two rolls off of one controller, but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks.

Stephen

Yes, you can power everything off a D-tap and the controller can handle 2 rolls of variable strips.

I would go with Option 1.

Maybe update the first page with a Count of how of the 73 controllers are left.

And post a commentary in this thread - to give people a chance decide if they need a couple more.

Nils,

Your lights look great. Are you using Nite Ize Gear Ties to support / hinge your barn doors? http://ow.ly/M4f1S

Are they just taped to the coroplast, or is there anything else in there?

What are the dimensions of the housing?

Good catch Herbert, that's the one :)
I used 2 of them, one on each side.
Works great to maintain the barn doors in any position.
For now I just taped them to the coroplast, but I'll be looking for a more long term solution. If you have any ideas, I'm interested.

Regarding dimensions, I went with 6x 60 cm strips, so it should be something like 70x25x5 cm for the whole fixture (without the mounting bracket).

Just did a few tests with my lightmeter for the fixture I just built.

For 3.6 meters of daylight strips (6x 60cm), at 800 ISO : I got f5.6+1/2 at 1 meter and f4 at 2 meters.

So less than 1 roll of the led strip. Do you feel like the output is equivilent to a Similar kino fixture? Similar size I mean.

Hard to say for sure as I haven't a kino here to compare, but I would say clearly more if I had to take a guess (similar size would be a 2 tubes x 2 feet). Feels much more punchy (as is usually the case when you compare led lights and kinos). Would love to compare, though.
And as you mentioned, that's less than 1 roll.

Also, I just did a white balance on my Epic, on a white surface : 5800°K and most importantly, tint at almost 0 (-0,2 or so). So, no green or magenta cast. Yey !
As a comparison, the Cineroid LM400, which are already pretty good, gave me a -7 tint (green cast)

Would you be so kind and supply that info in Foot Candles?

That would be 90 FC at 1 meter, and around 25 FC at 2m.

Oh, also, important note, these aren't the bare leds, there is a layer of plastic white diffusion on the rails I've used. So the numbers would probably be higher without the diffusion.

Nils, this looks great. Do you have a part number for the mount you used? And the plastic you have the LED strips under?

Thank you

The rails were these, I think : http://www.dichroled.com/documents/155.pdf
Here are some other ones that might be of interest : http://www.dichroled.com/produits.php?categorie=21

You should be able to source similar ones locally, or on the interwebs ;)

Regarding the mount, I used something like this : http://www.cineboutique.com/fr/plat...tine-murale-baby-male-16mm-15-cm-avenger.html
I guess Avenger or Matthews makes similar ones.
I used this one : http://www.photobest.fr/support-mural-spigot-120-mm.html
It's actually supposed to be a wall mount. I works fine, but it is made of steel and is actually pretty heavy, and it doesn't fold, so I'll try to find an even better solution in the future to keep the fixture as low profile as possible for transport.

I like this one too, which is articulated, but it seems to be pretty heavy too, and I would need a female-female adapter to put it on a C-Stand : http://www.cineboutique.com/fr/platines-murales/89-platine-murale-avec-rotule.html

A 60W power adapter seems to be working fine here (but I would use a bigger one if I wanted to add more strips).

The strips get hot, but you can still touch them even after a few hours.

option 1 makes sense.....

Appreciate your hard work Brandon, hopefully this comes to an end soon.

Very nice stuff Nils. Do you or anyone else know about other possibilities for mounts that would fit on a standard light stand (rather than a c-stand). I'm thinking more about total weight (c-stands and baby plates aren't the lightest things around).

Thanks Jean,
what do you mean by "standard light stand" ? The whole assembly right now is around 3 pounds, which is already pretty lightweight.
Now as I said I'm looking for an even lighter and more versatile mounting solution (that would be articulated and preferably aluminium rather than steel), but this one already works fine on a lightweight aluminium stand, that's what I have it mounted to right now.

Sorry no time to read every post are we shipping yet I have a film to shoot lol. Ty!

(edited) I caught up last few pages and see were due to ship on 25th (if 79 more controller buyers can be found?).

Thank you!
