  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Got weapon flipped handle forward.

Bjorn can you upload some test clips (lower res) for audio sample? really would like to hear how built in mics sounds.

Will do that right away.

Side note. just got foolcontrol kicking...Nothing new, but being able to tap into the camera without cables or anything via my iphone is blowing my mind more than just a little bit. I think the future is very much what Global Dynamics are up to when it comes to lenses.

:-)

Should receive my GDU 24mm this week... Eager to test it with the app and thumbwheels.

Sick concept of a fully motorized lens with no manual ring... Hope Jarred and Matthew release more of those in the future.

My only canon lens so far was the pancake 40mm I purchased in order to code foolcontrol :-)

Yes we should put fire under their asses so they go ahead and make a full line of lenses. I don´t like using EF glas for the reason that the focus ring can be bumped and they do not hold well if putting on a matte box etc. But I think if they did a full line up with modded canon lenses, bullet proof and prefereably with the same front diameter and thread it would be really cool. Then I would opt for such setup before most cinema glass. as I find focus motors and all the things that comes with cinema lenses to be wrecking my nerves. Takes to much time to make focus marks and motors that slips on the gears, all those cables etc. So much nicer to be in the digital end of things and let Canon do it all inside of the lens instead.

And together with your app it really is the way to go for... well, most scenarios we shoot in.

If global dynamic did like 6 lenses between 14mm and 135mm and then also made a small mattbox / filter tray to go with some small sized ND´s to go with it I think that could easily become a standard.

So here is some files.

Me pushing rec on the street outside my office... nothing special. Just full bit rate FF 6k weapon. Don't look to much at the colors it´s trump lens with half transparent black oval 3x iris disc.

Then here is a r3d with on board sound.... again nothing to take to the sound designer to get analysed. what I did was going into the audio menu and turn on channel 1 and 2 to onboard mic´s and pushed record. I was recording in my office which sadly has quite a bit of background humming noise from all the computers. Basically in reality it kind of sounds like somebody is vacum cleaning the room so with that in mind I have to say those built in mic are far above my expectations. Very happy to have them. I hate to record sound in camera and even more to mount mic´s on camera with all the cable clutter etc. But I very much like to have scratch sound in camera. As a lot of times when we shoot it´s without sound but recording sound makes it possible for us to skip the clap as we can simply talk to the camera and say what pass or take it is or just say "good take" when such is recorded etc. makes it easier for the editing.

Then when in need of good sound the sound guy can record all he wants on his own recorder. and if the tc i foucked up we got the scratch track to sync against with one of those sync applications and then all is good again... not that we should loose sync.... but well it seams to be some sort of fuckup on just about every second production we do with sound lol..

same file as vimeo link.

Again the levels are possibly a bit low, but exported as Linear PCM 24ibits straight from camera. with no settings adjusted. So download and crank it up to hear my computers render in the background. lol.

It's not necessary to do a new thread when there's already one about the handle, so I put in my question here. I currently use my Dragon with the Red Bricks and the Quickplate, but currently the top handle and the battery are very close to each other making the battery barely able to fit. When having the top handle on the Weapon, how would the battery work when the Weapon body is smaller? Will the Red Bricks be able to work together with the top handle? I'm planning to use it with the DSMC² BASE I/O V-LOCK EXPANDER.

Here, look at how the top handle just makes it possible for the Red Brick to stick to the quickplate. How would the same setup on Weapon look? Is it even possible with the DSMC2 V-LOCK?

Weapon is so small so it makes more sense to flip the handle facing forward.

Or use brute force, unscrew the rubber tube of that handle and take it to a metal shop and have them shorten it to taste....

You can just unscrew the round part at the back of the handle. It's super easy. You can screw it back whenever you want.

Amen. And said by every single AC who has used or seen our Weapon. Not sure why RED didn't just make that riser part with threads on both sides - seal it - and let folks screw on whatever style handle they want.

It looks as if the Universal Handle fits better to the smaller form factor, doesn't it?
Now RED would just need to create an alternative of it which includes a START/STOP trigger. ;) (and is reversible)

Don't tell them, I´m thinking of CNC a few "ultimate rubber handle replacement".

Something thats modular and can go from being a top handle to work as a top plate and also 19 mm top rods, EVF holder etc... that fits in the back threads where the rubber handle is seated on the stop start handle. :)

But that won't work if Weapon is smaller and the height of the Red Brick is unable to fit on the quickplate when using the top handle.

Wouldn't that be awkward while filming to have the handle facing forward if the monitor is on the attachment of the handle? I just don't see how the Red Brick / DSCM2 V-Lock and Top handle will work on the Weapon, it seems like a design flaw if batteries can't be mounted when using the top handle in it's standard position?
Or do they fit? That's my question really, can I use the DSCM2 V-Lock module together with the Red Bricks and top handle in their "standard" setup? All answers seems to be that I need to switch, unscrew, use side handles or something else, but having a top handle mounted in the standard position is like the basic setup I will always have. My camera case is set up to be good to go as a fast setup. The top handle I use now makes it possible to just grab the camera, mount the LCD, Battery and media and just shoot. I want to make my setup effective and time saving, so the less "building" whenever I open the camera case, the better. So my question is really if I can use the Weapon in the same config as I do with my Dragon right now. If not, what's the alternative so that I can?

I was talking about your actual setup indeed. Easier to install the battery.

How do you mean? That the top handle and Red Bricks work together in their standard operation?

I mean that I had the same setup that I see on your photo, maybe it's a bit different regarding the vmount module type, but the fact that it was close to each other was boring to change a battery fast. I unscrewed the small part and the space I had after that was making things way easier. Well, maybe it was just for my particular case. Just saying.

Look at the pics in my first post. the new handel is "flip able"if you remove the pins. And the old handle is just to put it on facing forward. Then if you want to be difficult you can just grab the handle and give it a good twist counter clock vice and it will unscrew from the mounting point... then you could shorten the handle with a saw or make it nice with new threads etc so it looks like it does now but just reads ED or RE on the rubber handle in instead of RED....

or wait until I make the superb replacement handle that I will sell for some stupidly high cost :)

I'd rather see Red making it possible to have this setup than using a saw to destroy it's second hand value. :P
I mean, the problem is really that the Red Bricks are too high, why are they so high? Makes the ergonomics bad.

Plus, if I shorten the handle, it will be too small for operation. Not being able to have a top handle and a V-lock in the same setup from the same company is really a design flaw in my opinion.

The thing that worries me on the V-Lock expander is the space between the battery rail and the connexions block. It seems a bit narrow and I'm not sure GMP batteries will fit for example. So I'm interested in that solution http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?140397-New-Movcam-DSMC2-accessories-power-display-audio
All V-mount batteries will fit. You can hotswap the battery without shutting down the camera as there is a 3mn integrated battery inside the module. And I guess it will be a good solution for the top handle + battery problem.
