GearNex 2011 Updates

Hey John, if you don't mind me asking... whose Gearnex is that? :) Been trying to find one locally for a while; I tried the V2 at last year's NAB but wanted to put some rigs on it before pulling the trigger on a purchase...

Hi Cail.

We had them on loan from Lemac. They got 2 in but after several unfavourable reviews I believe they went back.

JB

when you have differences like; 3 times the size, belts versus gears, $40,000+ versus $7,500. If it becomes to much of a complaint, then by all means we will find a way to address it.

I wasn't trying to rain on your parade. But the point of discussion was around why the wheel position was important and I was simply responding in a way that supported that position. No one was more excited that I was when I heard that a new geared head manufacturer was on the market and at such a great price point. I'm just supporting anothers feedback on a fundamental design point of difference with other heads out there.

As for the other item you brought up about the tilt hand wheel being in the way of larger set-up as shown in the picture, we agree. That is why we designed the swing tilt arm to allow for the lowering of the tilt wheel as well as a 180 degree movement from side to side.

Well that sounds like a true breakthrough !

To respond to your statement, "I also found the feel of the gearnex head to be stiff and lacking in "feel" a bit, but that was a version 1 head." My response is that Version 2 is a night a day difference. We had bought off the shelf industrial grade gears and modified them. It was not precise enough and had some tolerance issues we could not live with. So, we spent a lot of money and made custom gears from expensive metals that where hand polished to get the best results and we did. We now can get free spin with microscopic backlash from a worm gear set.

Well I would really really love to try a version 2 out....but.....see below

John, I hope I addressed the issues you brought up. Please keep in mind, Bret Allen, SOC and I wanted every camera operator to have a chance to be the best they could be. To learn what Hollywood has known for a long time, the advantages of geared heads in some applications like cinema. But for someone who lives in a community that does NOT support the entertainment industry like Los Angeles, New York, Sydney, Toronto, Bollywood, etc. they can't really buy, rent or learn how to use a geared head. So, we designed the GearNex with these areas in mind and for today's modern and smaller digital cinema camera's.

Well you're making assumptions about the production environment in Sydney and Australia. By and large, geared heads are not used at all. In fact I was only able to learn how to use a geared head by buying one for myself. I bought it along on jobs and never earned a $ from it simply because producers refuse to pay for such an 'extravagance.'

There are very few geared heads in Australia. I would think less than 12 Arriheads ( more like 6) would be in the entire country. Panavision might have a few but they move their stock around a lot.

Your product is exactly what is needed for someone like me that was wanting to use a geared head for their precision, but not able to get the production to pay the regular geared head prices on. If you can't get your hands on one, then it's impossible to learn how to use them.

It's just a shame that such minor things sully the experience. My experience with the version 1 head would have left me pretty unhappy about spending 7.5k...near the same price that I bought my CP mini-Worral for. I would really really love for the version 2 with the extra refinements to turn at view around. But again, as far as I know, none of the rental companies in australia have a gearbox v1 or later head. (Note Cail, who is in partnership in his own local rental company was asking about where I got to try them)

I'm waiting for a rental company to get one in so I can try the new one. I already own a geared head so here's no need for me to buy one of yours unfortunately.

Yeah, Lemac bought Version 1 and it did not have the upgraded gears. I talked with a lot of people at NAB last year but for some reason, I think I remember someone form Lemac coming by the CineToys booth and being very impressed with Version 2

Hi John,

As I said before, I appreciate the constructive feedback very much. I hope you get to try Version 2 sometime soon.

Also, the good news is with the GearNex version 2 and the $7,500 price tag.... someone could offer a geared head at the same price as a fluid head rental.

I know I was impressed at the V2 on the stand at NAB last year. Just waiting for the economics to make sense for us... you'll be the first to know when one lands :)

GearNex Training Class a success

GearNex Training Class a success

Our first GearNex training class is in the history books. We thank Laurel Canyon Stages, Michael Frediani and the students who took a Saturday off to learn about the wheels.

We also learned from the students feedback on how to make the next class even better. In the near future, we will provide for the different levels of experience by having two classes, GearNex 101 and for more advance operators a 202 class.

Here are some pictures from the CineToys' event;

I'd like to get my version one upgraded as well, but I thought I'd wait until after NAB to see if there were any other options that I'd like to include in the retrofit.

Hi Tim,

Good to hear from you and glad to hear you want to upgrade to version 2, you will be very happy with it. Sorry I didn't get your call today, I have been out of the office getting things ready for our big announcement at NAB.

As far as sending the GearNex back to get upgraded to Version 2, please send the unit to the P.O. Box on the website due to Pakmail being part of our upgrade workflow process. Once PakMail notifies us it's in, we will take care of it from there. You do not have to include bases, or any options to save on shipping cost. As far as the hand wheels, if you have the old hand wheel knobs that are pointed at the ends, just remove those and return them. As far as payment, you can send it with your unit or just email me at JoeM@Cinetoys.com to discuss.

When the unit has been upgraded, we will send it back to you anywhere in the USA for free.

Take care,

Hi Steve,

Good to hear you want to upgrade too. Any other announcements at NAB 2011, including our "Big Reveal", will be options to add on to your existing GearNex and will not require a complete rebuild like changing out all the gears from Version 1 to Version 2. We have been trying to be loyal to our existing and future GearNex owners by allowing everything to be upgradeable to their GearNex geared heads. So, if that information helps you or others in any way to decide what to do, great.

See at NAB, booth C7221.
