  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rumor about new Canon 120fps video camera

12.1mp at 120fps is like over 1.5GB/s. Perhaps, they really mean 12fps?

Canon is working on a pro video camera that has a 1x APS-C CMOS sensor able to capture up to 120hz or full frames a sec. Fab specs show 12.1MP. The body will be similar to that of the XL H1 with an EOS mount fully manual controls. Canon is working on 2 lenses for the system launch that have quick video AF motors and be compatible with Instant AF like their current video line. One will be a wide starting at 16mm and the other will be a tele zoom starting at 70mm.

While I can’t directly comment on the dSLR video modes being restricted, I believe they are lowering the options for this system to be launched sometime in 2010. Other specs on the firmware of the camera are: 720p 60,30 1080p, 24, 30 and 60. EF and EF-S lens compatibility including Teleconverters. Will not work with Sigma as the mount communication protocol is somewhat changed, those lenses will have to be sent in for an updated firmware. Tamrons seem to be unaffected or at least not mentioned. The video format will be a flavor of MPEG 4 with a roof at 56Mbits/sec. Work is being done on a video RAW format that will be 12bit only, and will need a special IO module separate from the default package.

While no pricing has been set, they target under 8k for the base system with the 16mm WIde and 4k or more for the IO module with uncompressed SDI Out and USB 3.
Storage system will be based on the CFast Spec! One Slot Only.
More info available as things progress.

Of course, Canon should have done this two years ago.

If the IO module records RAW, does that mean it's recording 12MP full sensor 1080/120p? or 60p? That's essentially a 4K RAW camera, right?

The firmware specs list 1080P @ 60fps.
If this is true, at $8K it would appear that Canon is paying attention to Red.

Clearly they won't have the raw workflow, or the modular egonomics, but it certainly is interesting.

If it's true that there will be no manual control update for the 5D, I sure hope Nikon takes that market with a new manual control 1080p DSLR. And to be honest, I do think that Canon actually is that stupid.

Not a rumor. There is also a similar camera coming from Panasonic.

RED made a few companies wake up and got a few people fired.

He he, looks like Red wave effect is showing up.
There will be lot of fun. Good job Jim. :cute:

I can't link to stuff people have told me. And you know ... "in development" does not mean it will work ... or make it to market.

Lots of companies make cameras. They all want to keep selling cameras. Most of these companies have shareholders who watch their financials and get very upset when they see the numbers slide ... into the red.

It's really interesting to compare the RED to the iPhone. Before Apple introduced the iPhone, smart phone technology was clunky and primitive. 18 months after the iPhone shipped, almost ALL of Apple's competitors in the smart phone market have introduced new products with similar functionality.

And, they're all still playing catch-up.

It's now been about 18 months since the RED ONE began shipping in quantity. I wonder if this NAB will go down in history as the the one where many of RED's competitors will try introduce new cameras to in an attempt to hang onto (or win back) their customer base.

I also wonder if there will be any timely announcement from RED to address this potential onslaught? :)

I think the only announcement most of us are waiting for is 'The Scarlet is now shipping'. Hopefully RED is going full steam ahead without any further major changes and delays.

I hate to say this, but as a long time Canon SLR user, if Canon can deliver an XL-H1 like camera with an APS-C sized sensor and an EF mount that can record at least 1080p/24fps with an option for RAW for under $8K, I'm sold. I have been a long time follower of Red's development and am very excited for the Scarlet, but truth be told, if I'm on a budget, $8K for a complete kit > $7K for just the brain.

Just my 2 cents (please don't ban me)

Matthew
