  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fujinon 19-90 T2.9 S35 Cine/ENG lens...

I agree, with the lens getting the correct power its most likely in Reds camp to debug. BTW the lens servo is quite nice, like being able to adjust the ramp as well as the speed.

who is selling the cable for this lens to epic?

CVP in the UK are selling 12v D-tap & 24v power cables to power the Cabrio when using EPIC (and other camera which do not provide power via the lens mount).

Thanks for the info

Can someone post stills or footage. There is almost none on the Internet. That's crazy to me. I just bought one of these zooms, on reputation alone and I'm eager to see its performance.

I'd suggest dropping Bill Totolo a line (he pops in on DVXuser fairly regularly), he's been shooting with three of them for the last couple of months I think.

It's here.....

Pretty awesome isn't it!

Still breaking it in -- hope to have stills comparing with Optimos before the month is out; just busy with a number of things right at the moment. But its an obviously nice piece of glass!!

^ any other findings?

It performed really well in my tests. Cine primes obviously have a bit better distortion control on the wide end, but for an all-in-one lens, it seems pretty rock solid.

yes it does distort a bit at 19mm, but it cleans up nicely to 25.

Now the distortion isnt terrible. in 5K WS, it really actually looks badass. 25-90 is quite gorgeous. Again, So sharp.....

Anyone interested, the new Fujinon Cabrio is a great all-in-one lens, but when in normal mode, it's close focus is actually really good on the long end, but is pretty weak on the wide end, when compared to high end cinema primes, such as Cookes.

Example: My 100mm Cooke Mini S4 is 36" CF. The 90mm Cabrio is 34" in normal mode. However, my Cooke 50mm is 20" CF, and the Cabrio is still 34". The Cooke 25mm is 10"! Cabrio is still 34". But the cabrio has a macro focus mode, if you ever find yourself below 34".

My test concluded that:
90mm is 30"____(saves 4")
80mm is 29"____(saves 5")
70mm is 28.5"___(saves 5.5")
60mm is 26.75"__(saves 7.25")
50mm is 25"____(saves 9")
40mm is 22"____(saves 12")
35mm is 20.25"__(saves 13.75")
30mm is 18.5"___(saves 15.5")
25mm is 16.75"__(saves 17.25")
22mm is 15.5"___(saves 18.5")
19mm is 14.5"___(saves 19.5")

Should I note the lens front is 11.5" from the sensor, so at 19mm, that is only a 3" gap from lens front to focus plane. The Cookes likely have a bit of an advantage as they are not nearly as long, being around half as long.

For reference, the Cookes are:
18mm is 10"
25mm is 10"
32mm is 12"
50mm is 20"
75mm is 30"
100mm is 36"
135mm is 39"

Verdict: The cabrio is a killer lens, but the CF distance leaves something to be desired on the wide end of the range. However, if in macro mode, the Cabrio gets very good close focus, although still not beating the Cookes. The Cabrio only beats the Cookes at close focus at over 50mm. At 50mm and below, the Cookes still focus more closely. But again, the cookes are about half the length of the cabrio and have what I consider really good CF ability.

Anyone else want to test and compare results?

Also, then again, how often are we really below 2'10"? I typically find 2'5" the closest I ever get on set unless trying to snipe a line of text from an insert of a newspaper or drivers license or something. Nothing too strange, but the macro on this lens just means CF similar to a line of cine primes. Angie DP zooms are 24" through the range from my memory.

By the way, I believe this is the only macro numbers posted on the web anywhere. If you know of some please show me the way.

Saw this lens twice last week. Very sharp on the projector, people were impressed.

Would you replace this single zoom over the Angie DP rouge 16-42 &30-80?
