  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fujinon 19-90 T2.9 S35 Cine/ENG lens...

Is 3kg really easy handholdable? Is it maybe because of the different form factor or?

I actually own BOTH Cabrios! The 85-300 is about a pound heavier. I shoot lots of professional sports with them. PGA Golf, NFL, NCAA, NBA and these are VERY manageable! I only wish the record trigger worked! That takes some getting use to! I still will reach up and try to start/stop with my right thumb! The 85-300 is ridiculously sharp! It's stunning! I thought I might return it because of the breathing, but honestly in my world, not one client has ever noticed or said anything. Honestly how often do you rack focus from 4' to infinity at 300mm?

I don't regret buying either of them! They're expensive, but worth every penny!

Hi Curt!

I seem to recall that there have been posts, regarding the 19-90 vignetting at the 19 end, FF5K. Do you have any info on how this new Cabrio lenswill fare? :

If your Arri 8K and thence a Red 8 or 9K come along as soon as it seems, won't these lenses fall short of coverage, by a fair margin?

Thank you very much

Hey Nick, don't forget that resolution is not the same thing as sensor size. Dragon's 5k is substantially smaller than MX's 5k, for example.
The S35 sensor size is dominant in the film industry and will remain dominant in the film industry for quite some time because it works so well for dramatic storytelling in with professionally shot film and tv.
Lenses that cover the S35 sensor size will do well now and for a long time.

We're looking for zooms that cover a larger sensor size too, but there are trade offs as the lenses cover bigger sensors that are undesireable. Right now, the 19-90 Cabrio is pretty much the only zoom I feel comfortable investing in. Its incredible; it stands out as the only handhold-able wide to tele zoom on the market. A uniquely useful and outstanding lens. The 85-300 breathes a bit on the wider end, (but not much on the long end!); the 19-90 hardly breathes. It breathes less than a number of the Ultra Primes...

I haven't seen any vignetting with my Cabrio at 5K. It produces a very clean image border to border. Really an outstanding lens. Super handholdable. I recently shot with mine hanging out of a helicopter and even managed to snag exterior looking inwards "selfie" shots one handed, (was strapped in) no way I could have done that shoot with any other lens. It has a very sharp image and decent smooth falloff.

Fury,

I'm not seeing any vignetting in 5K either. I've pretty much gotten to the point where I use ONLY the Cabrios. I LOVE them! I will say that the 85-300 is a bit sharper, but both are great lenses. The 85-300 DOES HAVE some breathing. However, I feel that folks, client wise who are looking for a lens like this understand what they are getting! I've not had a single complaint. Further, who REALLY racks from say 5' to infinity at 300mm? (OK... maybe every now and then, sure...)

I was wondering the same thing... coverage wise. (Looks like my Arri contact came up short! HOWEVER... knowing what I know, and how companies operate, I'm not discounting that 8K sensor just yet! I used to consult for Sony, and sometimes 'planned' announcements happened 6-8 months after the fact. It was so hard NOT to say anything about cameras I had 'tested' for them, but that 'technically didn't exist...' We may have the same situation here.) In any event... I'm only REALLY concerned about the 19-90 covering 6K. I KNOW the 85-300 will... It may end up that the 19-90 becomes a 24-90. Time will tell... If that's the case, I will STILL get Dragon, but use in 5K and gladly have more DR!

Hi Curt,

thanks for the detailed reply. I was really trying to reference, the new, Cabrio-14-28 T2.9, which was just announced at IBC 2013. The line is more complete, but with Dragon and the proffered 8K...

Regarding the 8K Arri, BTW, do you find it a bit odd that Arri has not come up with a 4K camera , as of today? This is an interesting bit of text:

http://nofilmschool.com/2013/07/arri-confirms-4k-camera-development/

Could there be something else, in the hopper, or something amiss, regarding Arri's ability to release a 4K camera? If their decision is to leapfrog to 8K, well they have been quite successful and nothing like a track record, but aren't several U.S. Tv shows switching to archival 4K this season...?

Thank you very much
