Hello everyone,

Just upgraded from the Raptor to Raptor X. Any tips, or anything particular I should be looking for?

Please do share your experiences, I’ll also be posting my findings here when I get the camera next week.

You'll see other gains for sure with fast motion in frame and motion seen from camera movement. Extended Highlights is pretty nice too once you get familiar with when it can be used in your favor.

My only feedback is pretty positive. The Raptor cameras are the most versatile production cameras on the market. Fortunately I've had a busy filming year, all of which shot on V-Raptor X. Not many gripes. There's a few things I'd "add" and I have some ideas towards future cameras, but this form factor has been pretty good.

Phil can you expand on the extended highlights comment? "when it can be used in your favor" leads me to believe there's some drawbacks.
I'm highly considering upgrading our V-raptor to the X for the extended highlights alone as we just shot a 4 camera interior interview setup with a lot of windows and had to deal with windows being blown out and using ND rolls to fix.

Are there limitations to the extended highlights feature? I know for instance with HDRX on DSMC2 there was problems with motion across windows as that camera was combining two shutter speed angles.

Thanks

@Phil Holland shared quite a bit of testing. He may elaborate, but either way this would be a great place to start if you want to evaluate the X:

And some earlier discussion in this thread too:

Appreciate this! I was searching the forum but didn't find these resources. Thanks

Would you be willing to share what features you would like to see added and your expectations for Red’s next-generation cameras?

Publicly I'll just say one for now. It's very clear that an in-body ND solution is desired. It will make the base camera potentially larger and/or heavier and there is a variable/question mark of how to achieve this with shorter flange distance mounts like Z and RF, but I can think of two ways of doing it "creatively".

I'll also add, I think the general size and weight of DSMC3 is very, very good. We can go lighter weight potentially, but for some applications that require stability, that might not be the best move. I'd say Komodo is right on the edge and if you've rigged one out for production, the smaller size starts creating conflicts, but the bonus is it's compactness. Balancing act there. I think full size Raptor and Komodo-X is pretty darn tight and good. Enough to get a wireless TC and video AKS on there plus some other goodies when needed, and small enough to pair down for gimbal and all that.

Yes, Internal ND is truly one of the most urgently needed updates. Thank you for sharing your insights from a professional perspective—very enlightening! Looking forward to the next generation of cameras! Especially now, the Z mount has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for us RED users!
