  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Forgotten?

No compelling reason for me to buy anything at the moment, so I am content to wait it out. Don't see anything else out there I can afford that I would rather have than a Scarlet.

Waiting.......

Patiently.......:nopity:

Me too... I've spend 16% of my life waiting for this camera... I seriously need a girlfriend.

Wow, that second interview was almost as bad as calling the scarlet the RED PRO 5.0!

Wasn't Darren Kitchen's brightest moment.

A classic.

Feel the cluelessness in his eyes at 2:26.

Here's my time-wasting guess.

Canon 5D is 3 years old. They replaced the mkI with the mkII, at EXACTLY 3 years, one month.

We KNOW from man on the street interviews at NAB 2010, with staff from LucasFilms, that Canon had engineers at LucasFilms asking for input on DSLR video design. I gather the biggest concerns Lucas raised were the codec and viewfinder.

Canon MUST be on the cusp of releasing a replacement for the 5D, imminently. Perhaps what they're bringing out is a pretty compelling upgrade, which dramatically narrows the performance gap between the spec sheet of the SCARLET. Maybe RED has seen something that's forced them to up the ante, to maintain what they've always intended to be a commanding lead. I'm not talking about a 3K 5D, rather a price/performance value that is a very persuasive alternative.

If the problem was solely the fixed lens, then why not release the Scarlet-C?

Another question I have is, why do we not hear about LucasFilm and RED in the same sentence? At least, I haven't. There's nothing to read into it, but is a curiosity. Lucas are extremely forward thinking. One would expect these two to be collaborators.

I have wondered about the same question a few times. I would expect Lucas to be one of the first to use RED Ones and EPICs, but nope.... Thats a bit irritating, especially after all his talk about digital being the future and of course the usage of 1080p-cams on Star Wars. Well i guess he has some contracts with Sony (and maybe now Canon too).

Dynamic range etc.. with how the web compresses stuff it won't make a real big difference

Sometimes I wonder if I'm just a RAW junkie or other people just don't get the power of shooting in RAW. The difference is that you can preserve highlights and bring up the shadows. Shooting up to 13 stops of dynamic range in a 16 bit container (forgive me if I'm using the wrong terminology) is unbelievably powerful. My Olympus shoots stills with around 10 stops of dynamic range in a 12 bit container, which pales in comparison. Same with my Panasonic GH2, which shoots video with around 10 stops in what I assume is an 8-bit H.264 container. Sure, for web display, the end result of all of these is an H.264 file with a bit depth of 8 bits or whatever the display will handle, but if you acquire that footage with a RED camera shooting RAW you're far less likely to have blow out highlights or crushed blacks because you can regrade the raw footage so much more easily.

I think that pretty much everyone who can't afford the EPIC or R1 is feeling like this post above.

To the micro budget guys, it really is a case of "whatever I buy now will have to last me for next 3 years." So with that in mind and the knowledge that the ultimate camera maybe on the horizon, a lot of us don't want to invest in something that will become obsolete within a matter of months and therefore feel left behind. I guess that is where all the frustration is coming from. I really hope that RED puts us out of our misery soon. The negativity + misinformation + speculation is messing with my judgment. Should I wait, shouldn't I wait? What is all the silence about? Why do these Ted videos seem to portray the Scarlet in a negative light? Why is it that the Scarlet has become such a taboo topic?

Sheesh, RED, throw us a bone... oh and a Scarlet, please!

no "ship" to jump. You buy what product is available at the time you need it, these are just tools to facilitate the creation of motion images.

Buy rent whatever, make new friends with expensive camera's, make deals.... this is a strange phenomena I wonder if people who were waiting for a Chevy volt and it was taking to long decided "That's it they have messed me around to much I'm done with it..." (I know not an apt comparison) or it's taking forever to make an affordable jet pack I give up.... REALLY so when this great product DOES come out you are not going to buy it? assuming it's still very competitive in the market I can't imagine some not buying based on emotional issues with the company though I'm certain there are some out there. So when we say jump ship lets be clear, I'm done waiting on reduser and scarletuser I'm off to live... great do it, or I'm going to buy said other camera instead.... wonderful great decision..... or I hate red and will never buy their products no matter what..... a little extreme but everyone is entitled to their opinion so fine have at it and stop talking about it.

I understand frustration, I just don't understand some of these ultimatum posts... but what do I know

p.s. if you are student there are great deals on film stock and even renting gear if you look around, get a old 16mm together with some friends get some film and you're off, we should all shoot film at some point even if we are going digital for every project, it's good to know where things came from and how and why they work a certain way...

have a good one!
and stay positive!

Well let's not forget that Scarlet has been HEAVILY marketed and hyped to us for YEARS.. What is occurring now is a natural thing. Prospective customers are angry and rightfully so. Going dark after 1000 + days of hype is sure to have some blow back.. Is it not?
Should we remain passive? It's no surprise Scarlet fans are just as passionate as Scarlet creators is it?

Sorry if I don't agree with you on the shooting film stuff ,it's like saying lets buy beta max player or a 8track tape, sorry but going backwards just for nostalgic reasons is the only reason to shoot film... Just like with tv's, computers, phone's, etc.. move forward and let the past be the past which is film IMO. Look to the future which is digital, otherwise what the hell are we doing on here lol

16mm is not backwards... hurt locker shot on it won best picture at the oscars, comparing 8track/beta max is by no means the same thing (now once scarlet and other 16mm digital replacements are out it may be... nope there will still be tones of people shooting on it). My point was most of the industry revolves around the old film workflow and things were designed to fit that, so working with it at least once is good for understanding where things came from... it's just like studying history learn from our past so we can see and try and create a better future, in this case a better documented and captured future. to each their own so don't take this as me saying you have to do it, just something I'm throwing out there don't like it throw it right back.

kalani I would like to point out the obvious I'm a scarlet hopeful as well, I understand the frustration but there is nothing to do about it but wait. Red has realized that was bad (hype) hence the blackout, so you want them to continue announcing things that will not come to pass or change to further enrage user's? they made some mistakes but they seem to be on the right path, I'm just surprised so many seem to be misunderstanding this. Maybe it's just me I don't know but some of these arguments or issues don't make any sense to me and seem to contradict things people have asked for or said before... then again as always I could be horribly wrong I don't know any of you and sometimes it's easy to misconstrue a point made on internet forums, if this is the case and I have offended anyone then I'm am sorry that was not my intention.

Have a good one!

to each there own I guess, the work flow for film is expensive and takes forever not cost effective or reasonable IMO RED is the future!

Let's get some Scarlet FOOTAGE =)

I honestly believe, the smoke and mirrors were never for us. Its all about timing, right? Waiting for competition to make their move. We all knew they would. The coveted 5DMKii ran its course and was dying fast. We all know Canon plans obsoletion, which is why there was a mkii to begin with. Now this next move.
What I heard about the mkiii is its not gonna be in the game anymore. Straight still camera.

So this anouncement is something else. Which is all fine and good. The game is on.
No one has to believe Red.

They are going to do what they are going to do either way.

agreed.. but with so many variables (people/personalities) there's no doubt that there will be equal or opposite reactions based on the number of potential Scarlet buyers alone...

Wow, angst is not going to make Scarlet come out faster.

.

Obviously you are new, or have not been following the Scarlet threads closely. It's been stated numerous times by the Red team that Scarlet is delayed due to a shortage of angst. As soon as that is rectified and they get a steady supply of angst they will be shipping Scarlet.

Agree 100%. I have shot 16mm film with sync sound, cut it on a flatbed editing system, and gone all the way to an answer print. It's not fun. It's a pain in the ass, and really expensive, and does not give you better results than high end digital, and requires WAY more lighting and crew.

I want the end result image, not the process. Check the gate, and load another magazine? No thanks.

Most Canon rumors say the Mark III is going to concentrate on adding features stills shooters want, not video. Makes sense to me. You can only cram so much into a DSLR. It's not like there's room to put in an XLR connection.
