  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Forgotten?

Scarlet is next, he said so. I expect to hear something in November. But that Damn Epic is looking Mighty! Of course there is the price point. But, who knows all the stages may be done by the time Scarlet is released, and then it won't be that far off. Either way, I personally like the fact that Red is somewhat limited. I like the exclusivity, and eventually the ability to be a part of the few professionals who actually KNOW how to handle these products. Even that benefits us! Its been said a million times, its not so much the weapon of choice as it is he who carries it. I have chosen my weapon, I will master it.

All these Canon and JVC announcements et all are WHY the Scarlet/S specs are changing -

for the last time... if Jim says he has our back... i'd believe him. His track record warrants it.

The ONLY thing holding back Scarlet FIXED was a lens part supply issue (nearly resolved) and its still in the STORE. The FIXED is not changing.

Whatever is replacing the other Scarlets or S will blow you all away. mark my words
Yet Jim Jannard referred to "Scarlet," not "Scarlets" or "Scarlet fixed" and "Scarlet Cinema." That tells me that either there will be only one Scarlet or all Scarlets will share the same sensor specs. And it's getting harder to justify 3K.

Scarlet 3k fixed is a camera we have seen small footage samples from, seen live and operating prototypes of in Ted's hands at NAB and on his hops around the world, seen in the field in Joseph Hutson's hands. 3k is still higher resolution in a digital motion camera most everything out there. To match it you have to go to the Alexa in raw format as far as anything you can buy right now.
Scarlet 3k fixed is still very much relevant in today's market and will be very competitive.
I'm sure there are some amazing products coming from RED down the road. But they could also release a 3k S35 format camera based on the new Dragon sensor technology for a low cost competitor to Alexa or the F3 and still be well ahead of the current market. Beating sensitivity and DR of the competition is of more value to most than more resolution in an HD centric viewing world.
Just because 4k has become the new buzz 4 years after RED introduced it in a practical camera doesn't mean the 2k/1080p release format market is not going to predominate for some years to come.

I would not parse Jim's words in the roadmap statement too finely. It is a very general post.

I don't think Red is gonna produce a new camera with less then 4K resolution.

They might do so to keep the price well under $10k. Not saying they will. Certainly not very likely for 35mm. But for 2/3" there is not much to be gained other than higher cost, reduced sensitivity and DR moving to 4k. Most lenses won't resolve 3k on a 2/3" size sensor so you won't really gain much there. You may see something different coming for an interchangeable Scarlet, but I doubt they will change the fixed much at this late stage, the hardware is pretty well finished and ready for production. Might see an uptick to a next gen sensor with better DR and sensitivity though.
Fact is Red has not deviated much from the original 2008 announcement specifications other than significant improvements in DR, sensitivity, and color science. Sensor sizes and resolutions announced then have not changed at all yet from what they have shown us.

I don't think they will develop any new sub-4K cameras, either. I think Jim Jannard's statement "What seemed like a good idea 3 years ago might seem completely wrong today" probably applies to 3K Scarlet. Regardless of whether 2K/1080p will dominate for a few years yet is beside the point. Red has gone on record saying "4K is the future." And despite Scarlet's positioning as an affordable camera (although that's becoming less and less true), it doesn't really fit into Red's vision of the future. Would it really be cheaper to develop a 3K S35 sensor than to use two-year-old 4K technology? I don't know. It doesn't seem likely that Red would want to explain another 3K camera, though.

I'm still pulling for a 4k or at least QHD super 16mm interchangeable Scarlet. They could do that on the same sensor fab as 2/3" 3k.

But would a super-16 lens be able to resolve enough detail for 4K? Isn't the super-16 imaging area only slightly larger than that of 16 mm?

Yes. 2/3" format frame area is about 52mm square. Super 16mm area is nearly 93mm square. Top line S16mm lenses (expensive) resolve higher than the 150lp/mm needed.

I know people think RED is a super company but lets be real, they have only so many hands...
EPIC then Scarlet. It seems fair and it makes sense, when scarlet starts rolling it'll be one hell of an awesome storm...

If there is a single post on this thread that is most accurate... This is it.

To play devils advocate, Red and it's limited hands are also rolling out a multitude of accessories and peripherals. Packaging, shipping etc.. Why would Scarlet be any different? When referring to Red as ONLY having so many hands, it sounds like a charity which couldn't be further from the truth. Hire more hands..., problem solved. I highly doubt Red is sitting there with a pile of Scarlet materials twiddling it's thumbs, eagerly waiting for more hands to become available..

RED rewards early adopters. It's part of what makes Red who are they. Prioritizing EPIC for R1 owners/believers/justluckyenoughtobeabletoaffordoner's is at the centre of their business philosophy and what they see as the right and fair thing to do. I'm guessing Scarlet is a very different business model to EPIC, much larger production volumes, massive demand, no particular preference as to who is first to be served, probably meaning they feel all scarlet waiters should have equal opportunity to order and receive their camera promptly rather than not have enough to sate the initial surge. I'm a scarlet waitee, 4 years and counting

I won't be staying up awake hoping for an announcement any time soon. I reckon you'll be looking in to the spring of 2012. The NAB show. They like their shows! All the expectation without the saleable product in your hand. Will 2012 pass with still no Scarlet? I doubt it. Too many people would get bored and look elsewhere as the market is now producing good alternatives.

Unfortunately, I think you're right. If the Scarlet was close to release, I think they would be shouting about it a lot more. And check the videos below, Ted is less than keen to even acknowledge the Scarlet.

On a side note, Where in Suffolk are you based?

doubtful Scarlet will be seen in 2011. I'd be surprised to see it in 2012 as well as it sounds like Scarlet went back to development...

I wonder what happened after the camera got turned off...

"Okay this is a secret, so don't tell anyone... epsecially not my Boss Jim who will go bananas if he finds out. But Scarlet is gonna be the most badass camera you'll ever lay your hands on. It's now going to be 4K, which is why we had to do some working on the lens. We'll try to have it out by the end of 2011, but let's be honest, it's probably not gonna be out before early 2012."

Or perhaps he just went apeshit on him... but still Jim has said the camera we want is later this year, so maybe we should just hold our horses and try to be just a bit patient.
