  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Forged Weapon

It's the Weapon Edition Edition.

Still, as Mikael states above, a bit perplexing at the additional add on pricing...

I think it means in the long term for high volume forged could be cheaper (and faster) to produce vs woven CF... but as of TODAY it certainly is not the case due to multiple unknown factors (could include significant investment in 'older' CF machines vs forged that is a complex and still very high end new process...)

;-)

Thank you very much

My rep said it was an extra $10k for the forged vs the woven. It super super sexy and i WANT it so bad just can't spend another $10k for looks at this time :-(.

I was told the same thing.

I would do it, but the practical voice in my head is telling me not to. Looks so sexy and this is more of the future of carbon fabrication that we'll all get to enjoy some day. But decided to pass this time around because, like the RED One and now EPIC, these are technological devices that will eventually be traded in, upgraded or re-sold. I think the Weapon form factor and body will be around for quite a while... So who knows, maybe I'm shooting myself in the foot by passing the opportunity. Besides, those of us who pay the extra now are helping to develop the process and tooling for the future. The next major body upgrade from RED could end up all being forged carbon if they can develop this to the proper stage. It gets easier too with increased production numbers to offset the tooling and R&D costs.

I would be pleasantly surprised if more features were possible .... what about matching Forged Carbon topHandle or JetPack?

There would likely be a tipping point where weight saved would compel many to pull the trigger. :)

forged carbon tech came from a lamborghini joint venture :
.
But what makes it so much better than standard carbon fibre? Forged Composite forgoes the standardized weave and uses a random arrangement of loose fibres mixed with resin and forms them in heated press at high pressure. What this does is that the resulting composite is strong in all directions without the additional cost and complexity of adding multiple layers. While the random arrangement of the fibres used might seem haphazard, the development process was spent making sure Forged Composite is statistically consistent. As a result, you get a product that is as unique as a snowflake in terms of aesthetics.

To further elaborate, the manufacturing process of Forged Composite is a godsend, compared to traditional carbon fibre. You can now form complex shapes with just a single piece, with little to no wastage of materials and at tolerances as tight as a thousandth of an inch. While material costs are the same as with woven carbon fibre, the fact that manufacturing time is drastically reduced and much less labour intensive, Forged Composites are potentially cheaper to produce and are better suited for high-volume production runs.

It certainly does not mean those special cameras are any cheaper for RED to produce compared to the woven CF ones but it looks like we may see more forged CF in the future once this tech becomes more accessible

This suggests to me that each camera becomes as unique as our fingerprints. If there was someway to register the random pattern associated with its serial number, the camera's identity could be as identifiable as DNA is to humans.

Well, DNA is an entirely different abstraction... But yeah, the compositional randomness of the carbon process makes each one unique just like a person's fingerprints, palm prints, etc.. In this case it's visibly noticeable due to the look of the carbon components and yes, could be used to identify individual cameras -- or the body panel pieces of those cameras, anyway. Woven carbon actually works the same way, but with nowhere near as much deviation and such differences are not readily apparent to our eyes. They are still a woven mat of fibers in resin and each fiber weave is chaotically random and placements, stretching, etc.. do vary, but only by minuscule amounts.

I'm not going to have one, but if that were possible, I would ask RED to find a way to etch or stamp my camera's serial number in the panel in such a way as it be identifiable from a few feet away. This would certainly offer an assist to insurance companies trying to recover a paid out claim for a stolen, insured camera.

I agree, however I can see how at some point it could be even cheaper than diecast aluminum since it appears that it comes out of the mold with very little trimming to be done and looking like that so doesn't need to be painted/powdercoated. Also may have better Radio frequency penetration characteristics.

All in all, a pretty sexy new technology.

Structural question.
Does the forged carbon graphite retain the same strength as woven cf?
Is there enough fiber overlap to retain the strength along the entire span?
I assume with the pressing method one can lighten the resin slightly, and still retain the layup strength.
Of course a camera housing does not have to be nearly as strong as a pressurized fuel tank in a rocket, but still curious.

My (limited) understanding is that the amorphous structure of 'forged composites' can increase the strength by up to 60% for the same weight.

Or to put it another way - to maintain the same strength as Woven CF - the Forged chassis could be made somewhat lighter.

As the Mg Weapon is only fractionally heavier than the woven CF ... I am guessing the Weapon chasis only contribute a fraction of the overall weight.

For the Forged Weapon to weigh less than the Woven CF ... Would this mean a new mould shape (to cast thinner walls) would be required?

Thanks Brandon for the kind words. It has really been a special week for me. I have shot big every day. Some days with big crews, some days just myself. I know that sounds a bit lame to all of you guys that get to shoot every day all year round, but I've gotten a bit bogged down with the business side of things lately and I've been slacking. As Ivan would say.. I've gotten the fire back.

It really makes me appreciate Brent and the rest of our team for really stepping up and the engineers that just continue to put incredible cameras in my hands. It also makes me appreciate all our incredible customers like yourself that just keep supporting us and pushing us to move forward. All the 3rd party manufactures that have jumped on board making cool new things for our cameras, and all the incredible talent out there shooting incredible images on our cameras.

So thank you, thank you, thank you all...

:-))

Another Forged Carbon Weapon fresh out of the oven. Looks like we are going to be making alot more of of these in both 6k and 8k than I imagined... So much so that the first W6k shipments in July likely will all be Forged. Pretty incredible considering it is an unlisted camera that you need to actually arm wrestle your sales rep to order :)

Da sales reps have puny little arms (no I'm not the ex govonor of Califoornia, really..).

Any update Jarred? Somehow we're already closing in on June...July seems so tantalizingly close!

Is it possible to 3-D print a Carbon Fiber case? Is that going to be the future of camera cases?... and will RED be a leader in doing that or a follower?
