  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Forged Weapon killing mags on power up

I send this thread to sustaining engineering to look into it. If you have a trouble ticket open, they can connect with you via that.

EDIT: Tech support and engineering are reviewing the two open support tickets and dealing with those customers directly on gathering additional information.

Awesome - thanks Brent!!

Has happened on two separate 512gb red mags, one of which was only a couple months old from brand new, both on the same firmware, not the latest update. While certainly willing to update the firmware, I'm certainly not wanting to keep "testing" it on set to wait and see if it happens again. Has already cost two productions serious money. I am now pulling mags insanely frequently and before any power cycle but am more or less living in complete terror

Joel, please continue to discuss with tech support so they can get the proper information to diagnose...

Hmm…was considering 512mags, perhaps I'll stay with 240s for now. There's no benefit to using 512 on a MG Weapon right? I know it's a faster card but I don't think MG uses the extra speed.

No benefit no, from what I can tell. MG wouldn't be able to use the extra speed anyway.

I doubt it's the cards if this happened on both cards.

Yep, have been going back and forth with support to get them all the info. Submitted the ticket before posting here. Not trying to stir the pot, just want to see if anyone has encountered the issue!

True but 512's have had exclusive issues before (in the 1.8 size), so who knows.

We've had no issues with 512G cards on Dragon. Haven't had issues on the one job on our Weapons to date but will be super cautious now!!

If this is firmware related, then it needs to get fixed ASAP.

A camera that erases its own media...is not a camera.

Im sure RED will fix this, but terrifying indeed...

Like that film camera that never made film salad... :)

I got something like this swell. Started camera and it said that the mag was fragmented and needed to be formated... which I did, I had nothing important on it, only last project stuff. But it scared me a little. Though the DIT had erased clips on the mag or such but apparently there was nothing like that. And I did not check if if was recoverable.

What size mini mag do you have? 512?

Spent a fair bit of time trying to recreate this with 4X 512GB MINI-MAGs. Haven't gotten the error. I'm wondering if this is a format from a prior firmware update to newer firmware update thing?

Hmm...interesting. That would be elaborate to test, but I suppose a roll back to earlier firmware...a format...and rollup to new firmware...would be only way to test that?

Pumped a few mags through today with no issues. I have re-installed firmware and secure formatted cards so think i'm all good now. Pictures are singing.

I doubt it. Camera was running the same firmware for a lot of days of shooting before the first incident so all the mags had been through multiple cycles in the same firmware. Going to do a little testing today on the same firmware to see if I can recreate it before shipping down to RED.

Shipping camera or mags back to RED? Or both?

Just curious where issue seems to lay...
