Anyone else had this happen?

Twice now (once a couple weeks ago and once today) my Forged Carbon weapon killed a mag on startup. Both times on commercial shoots. Both times with footage on the mag. Both times after having moved on to the next scene. Restarted camera to do a battery swap and it booted back up with "Media Not Formatted Properly" or some such message. Nothing will play back in camera. Nothing shows up in the computer.

RED has had one of the mags for two weeks and says it would take another week to maybe recover it. That job already colored and shipped. Today we were (fortunately) able to reshoot the scene but it pushed a 30 person production into OT. I have to send the body back to RED. Praying I can get a loaner because I have a ton of shooting coming up and can't afford that kind of loss on a camera that's only a few months old.

None of my local DITs had ever heard of any such incident, REDUndead didn't work, and the crew at RED Support said that we formatted the mag (we didn't) and that was making it hard to recover. Funny thing is, redundead was able to recover files from a previous shoot but not the new ones. Rather terrified of shooting on the damn camera now. Had several days of incident free shooting between the errors which makes it even scarier.

This sounds super weird. What size MINI-MAGs are you using?

I'm sure you have, but have you re-installed the latest firmware?

I have had a similar problem. After putting in a new card and booting up the error message says the file type is not recognised and to format the card. I haven't lost any material though. At first i thought a client was bulk erasing the SSD's before returning them but I have now shot on cards without them leaving me and this problem happened twice in one day. I also have a very slow boot up that looks a kin to a ZX spectrum.
Going re-install firmware today

What comes to mind is as a safeguard remove the media when you boot up then put the card in it might help

This sounds like a very scary thing indeed. please keep us posted on how this resolves. Losing trust in reliability is something we really don't need. So hoping this is diagnosed and fixed pronto.

This happened twice on my epic dragon right before I sent it in for the upgrade last week

I was on the latest release build firmware. I know it's a firmware issue because I literally had zero problems with my camera the entire time I owned it -- I updated the firmware and this problem started happening -- same thing to a friend as well

If this is firmware related, then it needs to get fixed ASAP.

A camera that erases its own media...is not a camera.

Im sure RED will fix this, but terrifying indeed...

Has happened on two separate 512gb red mags, one of which was only a couple months old from brand new, both on the same firmware, not the latest update. While certainly willing to update the firmware, I'm certainly not wanting to keep "testing" it on set to wait and see if it happens again. Has already cost two productions serious money. I am now pulling mags insanely frequently and before any power cycle but am more or less living in complete terror

Joel (and RED) Please keep us all updated. I have not had a fail on my CF Weapon through some intense shooting in the jungles outside Santo Domingo but this is more than curious. Don't let this thread die before we know the answer

Thanks,

Peter

Agreed - fact that it's happened to Giles and Jake as well, suggests its not isolated to one camera.

I'm sure issue is isolatable (maybe its a particular module attached, particular batch of mags, particular line in firmware, etc).

But this needs to be addressed and isolated fast.

Cameras are like computers - this happens. But faster this gets resolved the better.

Just for clarifications, are the various incidents cited here all mini-mags? Are they all of a certain size?

In case of any confusion, as I have said in my post I lost no media at all. It was all copied across safely. My issue was on loading in new mags. I hadn't secure formatted my cards since I started using them which may have been at fault. I've shot for several hours since and it hasn't repeated the problem
They were new 512 mags, the only attachments on the camera are the base expander and the ET Weapon integrated VLOC module and my 5" touch. EF mount in this case.

I send this thread to sustaining engineering to look into it. If you have a trouble ticket open, they can connect with you via that.

EDIT: Tech support and engineering are reviewing the two open support tickets and dealing with those customers directly on gathering additional information.
