  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Forged Weapon killing mags on power up

Certainly an interesting theory but why would it do multiple cycles without attempting to update the firmware then all of a sudden decide to do so?

Nick,
Yes, if I had not back it up, I would have lost the footage. My other two cards are 128 gb. They work fine. Hope they will keep doing that.
Tried to read the 240 gb once more. My computer tells me (latest mb pro) that the card is not formated and can not be read. "Please eject"!

Today I got an email from red support. They asked me to send in the 240 gb card.
I am not sure what to do. Order a replacement, or not? As of tomorrow I will be working on Saba, West Indies, for two weeks. I really need an extra card. Maybe it is best to ask them how long it will take to repair it?

So i had a similar issue on an Epic-X. Camera on most current firmware, media loads in camera with extended wait time. Tried to reformat. Tells me format failed. Tried to load on computer. It will not see the card at all. 240GB 1.8 SSD. Card sent to red. Just got a repair cost from RED ..... =(

Dave, how much were the repair costs?
Red support asked me to send in my 240 gb 1.8 ssd? Mine had similar isseus as yours, but on Epic Dragon.

Throwing stuff at the wall theory... Camera decides to update Mag's Firmware during Boot cycle effectively corrupting "boot Sector" or File Allocation Table of Drive?

Interesting theory, for sure.

Maybe the power up triggers some kind of firmware check across all modules, including the SSD reader?

Who knows.

I hate to speculate too much though, as really only RED would know these answers.

Another theory:

It may be possible that you ALSO have corruption of the internal (non-SSD) storage within the camera.

I've had exactly the same SSD error ... and a few others in the last month.

Most fascinating thing about your story in that thread is this:

+) SSD : "The media in the Side SSD is not formatted correctly to work with this camera. Do you want to re-format it now" One off problem. Rebooting the camera .... and magically, the SSD was fine.

Looks like you may have found a "cure" to this reformat mag SSD issue: appears rebooting camera may restore mag to health, which would be a stunningly simple solution... to this otherwise troubling problem.

Important to keep this in mind.

Also your internal SSD theory is interesting...

I believe I may have encountered the same issue again though this time avoided corrupting a mag. Impossible to know but interesting nonetheless. I had the record button on camera stop responding on my second day shooting after my Helium upgrade. This was the same thing that happened the first time I had a mag get corrupted so I ejected the mag before rebooting. The mag was fine and I didn't have an issue after that. My heart was racing and I was sweating up until I could check the mag though. Bit of a Schrödinger's cat; I'll never know if the mag would have corrupted had I power cycled with it in camera...

Hello all, I have experienced the dreaded "card not formatted for use in the camera" on the first day with my new Epic-W. It was the 2nd roll and happened on boot up after shifting location. Power shutdown was normal. Card formatted in camera. I have submitted a ticket and uploaded my log file.
I will not power up the camera with media attached for the remaining 2 days of my shoot.
Any advice for the mag that had this issue? How likely is it that the data is gone. FW 6.3.75
Been using RED for many years and never encountered such an issue. Anyone else experienced this recently as this thread has been inactive of late?

Let us know what happens.

What media was it? 512?

Hard to tell what's causing these issues exactly (ie firmware, hardware?).

Let us know what RED tells you - would be great to have more clarity.

thx

Subscribed to this thread, as I'm curious to find out the culprit. I'm on my way to get my first RED and there is no authorized dealer or service centre in my country, thus makes me a little bit worried.

I suppose SSD drives are highly sensitive to static charges, maybe some power fluctuation or electrical spikes while powering up..? Just a wild guess :)

Secure format all your mags before you use them and after firmware updates. NEVER power cycle the camera with a mag in it. And then you should, likely, be fine.

Ideally, it shouldn't come to this. These are world class cameras so many of us know, love and depend on.

Fingers crossed we get more definitive details!

This most recent example was on latest firmware, so hard to know what exactly is happening - and not worth guessing!

Here's a recent "Side SSD is not formatted correctly" issue on an Epic Dragon running latest firmware, on a 240 mag:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...ormat-failed&p=1685580&viewfull=1#post1685580

I've asked Willem to keep us posted on what's happening to him.

Worth noting the error message listed in that thread:

"The media in the Side SSD is not formatted correctly to work with this camera. Do you want to re-format it now?

Is exactly what we got when the Stormtrooper Helium booted up and deleted our 512 mag.

This is a reminder that this "Side SSD is not formatted correctly" behavior is def NOT isolated to DSMC2, but is also happening to DSMC1...

Whether this is firmware related is unclear, as that is something that RED would have to confirm.

Just keeping you all posted.

Update on this one:
Last oktober (2016) my Epic Dragon killed one of my mediacards (240 gb, 1.8"). The card itself was only 2 years old at the time. The camera was not able to formatted it anymore, and kept saying that the card was not formatted at all. At first I still could copy the footage that was on it, but after a firmware-update even that became impossible. (I updated to make sure that the problem was not related to the firmware version I was running, which was the one before the latest one at that time. And luckily I had copied the footage.)
While it happened the camera was on prerecord. Due to failing temperature-management it shut down. And after powering up again, the card failed (I was working in a tropical environment). My other mediacards never showed the same problem and kept working flawlessly during that day and afterwards.

After returning to my home-base I sent the mediacard to RED for evaluation. After some time (Christmas-holidays) I was asked permission for formatting the media. (My camera would not format it anymore, but at RED they were able to do it.) Then, a week or so later, I learned that the mediacard was operating within specifications, and it would be shipped back. Of course, I was very happy to learn that RED only would charge evaluation and shipping, and that my media again worked perfect. (destimated amage: approx. 200 usd)
Just to make sure, I asked my contact whether the technicians had found anything at all. I was told that it had not been possible to reproduce the issue, but that the media operated within specifications. And if I wanted, I could provide some additional info on the circumstance under which I worked when it happened, because it could be helpful. So I did.
Then, quit unexpected, I was told that they had been able to reproduce the issue. My mediacard could be repaired, and it was essential that the internal-board would be replaced. Potential damage: 1200 usd.

I decided not to have the mediacard repaired and to buy a new or used one instead.
In the end i never learned the exact nature of the issue that caused killed the mediacard. They only thing that I have noticed since, is that the instruction to "secure format the media before using prerecord" came with the next firmware-update.

Personal I am not so sure that the issue is directly related to the way the cards have been formatted, because the mediacard that was killed also had been securely formatted when it happend. But: better to be sure, then sorry!

A quick update from me.

512 card en route to RED for data recovery.
On day 3 of the shoot I had the same error message again. This time it was not on power up.
Upon triggering record the camera CUT itself and after a menu hang up once again the dreaded "card not formatted for use in the camera" message.

We had done 4 set ups on this card, which we quickly had to re-shoot.
Due to limited media we did a quick a quick secure format and then the card worked fine for the rest of the night.

Red are now analysing the log file and will get back to me. Hopefully this can be addressed as soon as possible.

This is the first job for this camera : ( and my Epic-W has already forced me to re-shoot 8 set-ups.

Interesting. Did you ever have these issues on your Scarlet Dragon?

Again - its with a 512. I don't know if all these issues involve 512's, but it's certainly a common theme.

Makes me wonder if that's why RED is switching to 480's and 960's?

good call!!

power cycling without media is not a longterm solution, we need to be able to trust our equipment. I hope this get sorted asap

this thread has scared the shit out of me tbh
