  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FOOLCONTROL for Iphone @ IBC

Peter as Trent explained, to be able to use the app offline it would require me to write a complete virtual camera that would respond to commands from the app. Had no time to do it as of today.

As far as using the app offline for meta data ingest or reports I'm am not sure I get what you want to do. App will soon have a report system build-in with pitch/roll/gps/focus/timecode/camera aettings and clip medtadata but that will be exported by email...

And about competiting with free apps... I agree it doesn't really make it an easy game

Mikael, thank you for the feedback. Your app might be the most expensive app I have bought to date - but easily the one with the best value as well! And I would gladly pay double once the reporting and off-line functions are completed. Try making it in-app purchase add-on...

What I would like to personally see in terms of reporting is the ability to send full report about a MAG before ejecting it (either via email, or to a cloud storage - ideally both). This would include complete shot list with full metadata for each clip, ideally a small thumbnail (3-strip with frames from start, middle and end of a clip works best). It should be in a format compatible with major spreadsheet SW - like Excell and Numbers (CSV?)...

I am sure more things will come to my mind later... ;o)

Hello Peter

I know people are used to pay 0 ->20 usd for their app but the market was way too limited for me to be able to price it like that and keep supporting it. I am not sure I will be adding too much in app purchases.... Will rather just make free upgrades for early adopters and raise the entry price if many more features are added. I may do another app version if I split the screen in two between foolcontrol and video feddback on large iPhones or iPads but that will also require specific hardware...

Right now there is no image transmission via wifi from the camera and via REDLink or HOTLink it probably won't be possible at all... Only if using GIG-E if RED decides to opens this.

So once I make reports in the app the iOS app won't have thumbnails, only on OS X if you use the foolscreen video in via blackmagic device...(OS X version already has a good base for logging).

You should download the demo version of foolcat and give it a try... No csv export yet and altho it is quite a simple app it offers several things you describe (altho you need to unload the REDmag from the camera)...

Feel free to email or PM me if you have questions or suggestions :-)

Hello Mikael-

Your work looks amazing; I can't wait to take it for a spin!

A few questions for you:

-Do you have any plans to collaborate with another party (such as Offhollywood or Redrock) to offer a physical follow focus solution in the future?

-I plan to test the focusing performance of this technology via your OSX demo before I commit. Will there be some warning before you increase the price of the iOS version?

-How does foolcontrol handle Canon iris movement? It seems to me that, some years ago, there was some talk of a potential software solution to smooth out the movement of Canon irises to make iris pulls possible.

Hi DJ

No price increase in the coming days and I will warn before it happens at least here or if you send an email to list@foolcolor.net

Doing some tests on my side in the coming weeks for physical FF knob, 4096 steps over 360 degrees. Might take a few weeks before I can confirm any result and it also could be difficult to bring it to market at a reasonable cost...

Iris pull UI not implement yet in app (only set 1/4 or 1/3 of stop) but it will be very dependent on lens's motor ability. Current lenses do have much bigger steps on iris compared to focus so as far as I could test on a few lenses it won't allow smooth rack iris yet. Nikon looked better than canon as far as I could tell. More on this soon.

Always liked your 'no brainer' calavera skull (no using it lately but it sits on my desk right next to a 2001 monolith replica), so free to email me if you need to test my apps beyond what the demo limit offers.

Happy to pay your asking price, people gotta eat. The real problem is the lack of wage growth, but that's a different discussion. Love the app, thanks.

wow the focus control is very very impressive!
Anyway to make a whole menu in formatting the card?

Thanks DJ !!! :-)

Charles, formating cards will be in the upcoming update with proper warnings etc...

but if you really need that now, you could access it using the keys/menu page and navigate to it if you have monitor return... Or you can contact me by email and I will send you the 'super dangerous' presets that can you can import to do this with 1 'click' like I sent you for OS X foolcontrol (except on iOS there will be no extra warning yet... Just format or secure format on preset apply).

Hi Peter

Right now working on adding more features, for the missing pages + new stuff enabled in FW 5.3.
After that will work on large screens / horizontal UI, so no ETA yet on this.
Feel free to send suggestions or feature requests by email / PM, I have quite a long list of stuff to add already but user's feedback is always welcome.

Was there going to be a price increase on FOOLCONTROL Ois soon? I can't recall now whether I read that somewhere or not. I've held off on purchasing because I'm waiting on my HOTLINK, which Mark says will for sure ship this week. And since I can't use the app without interface to the camera, I figured there's no advantage to getting it before the HOLINK arrives. But I certainly will if there is a pending price increase. Mikael, am I worrying for nothing?

Elizabeth,
no worry for now.

I will warn if price goes up and it will be only when I will add lots of new features later this year... probably will not happen while FW 5.3 is still in beta...

Also, I think I recall reading that the OSX and iOS versions of FoolControl are completely separate purchases. Is that correct? I am aware that Apple's App store has some fairly draconian stipulations governing app sellers, but do you offer a backdoor? For example, if we were to purchase FoolControl for iOS, would you give us credit for the desktop app?

If not, why would someone choose one over the other? If my memory serves me correctly, the desktop app will do overlays for VFX...obviously not a feature on the iOS version. Any other such features differentiating the two?

Thanks in advance, Mikael.

Yes feature set is different and in a nutshell OS X offer more while iOS has a better focus control due to tactile interface.

Main difference is in environement where you mostly use cameras... A laptop or desktop app is more suited to studio / indoor / in vehicule applications whereas the mobile app is much easier in the field !
