  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FOOLCONTROL for Iphone @ IBC

Gotcha. I'm not trying to come across wrong or anything - Film, unfortunately, isn't my full-time job. It's my passion, and an expensive one lol. I'm just trying to find ways to get awesome gear that will last a while. I know some apps charge every few months for a new version. Was just making sure it would be supported for a while before a major overhaul. :) Thanks for answering!

For the brief time I was able to work with it, Foolcontrol performed admirably. It was extremely cool to basically have total control over the camera from the palm of my hand. This was further highlighted when jumping to and from Steadicam and jib, and being able to fluidly reset parameters on the fly -- even when cam was 20' in the air. Can't wait to start UAV testing once I have a revised HOTLINK.

Thanks for your dev time on the app. It was time well spent. Super cool.

More info when things are finalized but lots of cool interactions will be possible between foolcontrol and RTmotion new long distance module they are working on...

you might have answered this but do you think you will do a landscape view for the app?

most of the current iPhone mounts are geared for landscape so it would be handyy

Yes considering doing at least one page horizontal for focus and quick commands for gimbal usage. You can let me know by email or PM what kind of commands you would like on such landscape oriented page.
 
I Just received my hotlink/downloaded fool control for my iphone 5 and I'm having trouble connecting my Dragon. I tried searching the forum and both sites, I believe I'm following all of the correct steps to connect fool control but it still doesn't connect.

1. Powering hotlink through ptap to 2 pin lemo
2. Connected serial cable to control port of camera
3. Serial Protocol, redlink command protocol
4. blue light is on hotlink
5. connect to hotlink wifi on phone
6 launch app, doesn't recognize camera.

Am I missing something here?

Russel/Mark, let me know by email if I can help.

Ben, with FW 5.3 and upcoming upgrade you will be able to access camera menu and format REDMags. right now you have 2 options :

- using KEYS page you can access MEDIA menu and navigate to confirm formating (requires looking at a monitor with menu)
- email me so I can send you some special preset to importin the app that will allow automatic formating of the SSD (not included in the app by default to avoid accidental format of media)

I had a faulty cable, works perfectly now. Hotlink and Fool Control are amazing!! Thanks for making amazing products Mark and Mikael.
 
foolcontrol iOS 1.3 free update :

new : T/E sensor calibration warning (temperature / exposure)
new : full menu tree navigation for FW 5.3 and up
new : DRAGONCOLOR 2 and REDGAMMA 4 support

bugfix : setting a manual negative LOOK value was incorrectly set as positive.
other minor bux fixes.

I would like to chime in on a practical side of using this very handy tool.

I thought long and hard about the best way of mounting it in different situations. Horizontal? Brackets? ... sometimes the simple is the best. Diagonal.

To each their own, but for my ends and purposes it suits to mount the iphone (with welcro on a low cost phone cover) at ca 45degree on my right-hand handle. In this way the thumb has the freest access for focuspulling and the display is fully readable and menus can very easily be operated.

Thanks Thommes for the feedback, feel free to send a picture of your rig... I may be able to adapt things and will look into creating a special UI for gimbal / handle use if needed.

Here are some images, couldn´t be simpler. One of the advantages is that the phone is not lifted much at all up from the handle, so my thumbs have ready access. It depends on the size of the hand though. Super flexible, the velcro wont let go of the phone at all. I have placed two small triangular pieces under the welcro on the handle in order to make it flat on one side. In that way the phone wont wobble.

Im sure there are lots of other creative ways out among you guys. Let us see them. :)

PS. I did ask for a straight slider alternative to the dial for focuspulling, but I think it is unnecessary. If one needs finetuning of focus with minimum hand movement, just slide the thumb in a semi straight line on one side of the dial. Works well.
 
foolcontrol upcoming update will have an optional auto-update location metadata with GPS coordinated...

useful for run and gun, documentaries, scouting, heli etc

come and check it out at IBC 2015 along with an upcoming brand new OS X app for advanced multi-cameras, multi-devices RED camera control over wifi...
