  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Focus....

Lee, you have a point - but Jim's are better. How fast do your Nikon lenses focus on your 5DMkII? Your EF L series on your D700? Your anything on your F23 or Alexa?

This is revolutionary stuff and Jim and co are sharing their little breakthroughs with us. Freakin' amazing that it works at all. Let's not whinge until we've seen it in action. And I'm sure, if we try it and have issues, a free firmware update will not just solve it but improve it beyond all expectation. That's what this company does.

I notice that some people are focussed ('scuse the pun) on autofocus in motion vs FF but I can see there's a world of potential between those two extremes. For a start, I can see the director sitting with a Redmote and controlling focus pulls at their own pace, after the AC maybe has set up ramp speeds etc in blocking. I'm not sure I'd ever want the camera deciding what is in focus but the idea of having it perform the focus on the object I specify, when I tell it to, is thrilling.

People that know their glass know that the 85mm 1.2 lens ( used here ) has an incredibly long focus rotation and a very slow (but accurate) movement... much, much slower than the 1.8.

Regardless... as Jim said the camera was set on critical focus speed, and notice there is no "hunting" around for lock... even wide open at 1.2. All this while recording 5K video you can be proud of. Good luck getting your 5-4-3-2-1 year old camera to do that :)

Still amazes me how people with only half of the information dig so deep into this stuff.

Hey Jarred,
I am planning to drop one of these little monsters in a water housing that will be shooting in and out of the water so the lens will be operating through a polycarbonate dome that has a UV coating.
I'm not up to speed on the tech deets of the camera and AF control system of these new babies obviously but I am interested to know if focus will be effected by above or will the lens retain all it's focus mannerisms? Do you think that the Red lenses will have a big advantage over say a Cannon or Nikon lens in this situation.
Do you guys also have any heat data yet ie how much the rigs generate when under full load as this is gonna be of huge interest to anyone wanting house the machine in a low air -gap housing.
Am I way off topic here and wasting your time when you could be putting new rigs into boxes ready for shipping :):):)

I can't tell you how exciting all of this information about the focus is to me. One thing that seems to be missed at times on this forum is that even though RED is a digital cinema company, digital cinema is not the only thing these cameras will be used for. There are many event videographers and other genres that are going to be psyched to learn about all of the focus options that RED is offering that will help them in so many situations. I think this will help open up the cameras to being easily used on projects other than just cinema work. If you want a focus puller, that option is available to you but if you are a one-man-band shooting in difficult focus situations, these AF options are brilliant. More options is a great thing, and in one swift move makes the camera available to a larger market. Great job RED!!!

The Red Lenses really intrigue me knowing that they will be optimized for the Epic- any word on pricing and when they will be available?

Also- in the one page on the Epic, it says that 5k 100 fps can be recorded to a postage stamp - what is that?

And what speed setting was it on?

Jim

I meant knowing what was going on in front of the less was a moot point. ha all I know is everything looks great and the AF looks to be working awesome from what we can see so we(as us Redusers who aren't in the know with RED) shouldn't sweat the details right now just be happy with what it is. I know when it comes out it will be more than anyone expects...and then some:smilewinkgrin:

Hyperbole... :-)

Relative to an SR deck, a CF card is "a postage stamp".

Any news about bug?

Major bug was destroyed. It took a long time. Now we are adding features and killing the standard bugs that show up along the way. Just like we have been doing for a couple of years now.

you should be fine underwater since the AF works on a pixel level, refraction is compensated for. Red Lenses are going to be much faster, much more accurate designed for motion.

As for heat.. You should be fine for most of what you are doing. Jim can tell you about a little test we did the other day when we put "Lucky" and "Snake Oil" into a sealed 2 foot heat chamber for 14 hours :)

Ha I saw this quote earlier but cant find it now "Still amazes me how people with only half of the information dig so deep into this stuff.":001_cool:

I couldn't agree more, every time there is a positive thread about what is to come from Red everyone digs into everything so much. I hate seeing any negativity brought to something that should be so exciting and positive. So lets all just sit back and enjoy the ride and be thankful for getting insight to what the future holds.

No worries Brian... we are used to it :) This is way too much fun to let a few sideways comments get us down.

So what's the most exciting feature about the Epic you can elaborate on? Obviously, there is a ton you don't want to talk about now but anything you can reveal??

Exciting times. Desperately trying to keep reminding myself "everything is subject to change..." and just enjoy the ride. Can't wait for more tidbits to start rolling out as Jim mentioned...the lull is coming to an end :).

I think every time someone attempts something ambitious, there will be misinformed cynicism. From the ignorant as well as from the knowledgeable. Men are too proud to admit they don't understand, but I have to say, the kind of stuff RED is doing, I can't even imagine! And men freak out at things they don't understand. It is all part of the process. Glad to see RED take it positively.

Jim,
If I ever get to meet you I would like to buy you a drink and shake your hand sir!

Cheers,

Stephen

LOL! Good to know. I wasn't sure if your ingenious designers came up with a new recording technology. :)
