  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Focus....

BTW... I'm staying up to give Europe some love. :-)

Jim

Europe appreciates the love Jim! This is awesome stuff you are throwing at us.

Well that solves any questions I had about close focus distance !

Pretty impressive for an x8 zoom.

Sanjin... please reserve judgment until you see what we have come up with. Imagine pointing to your subject on the LCD and having it snap (or roll) into focus. It is MUCH better, and more precise, than you might imagine. For the purist, MF is always an option. But you need to see this...

Jim

Thanks Jim,

looking forward to see it...

Also by Roberto's PM suggestion I made my images a bit smaller to fit with the tread image sizes ...

Jim

Europe is a pretty sweet spot in summer but also I like US feeling too....

SJ, those feel a bit big. 0.02 And did you get beat up by that guy the speedo? :)

Roberto as you already know there are no more rock stars,

we are living in the age of DJs (that also has got an obsolete fact).

Btw, the speedo guy is a local famous DJ...

I have worked with this AF a bit and I can see a few ways to use it. If you have talent that is 9' 6" away, you can tape it off and set it with your lens scale... assuming the lens and back-focus are dead nuts. Or you can visually set it with your EVF, LCD or external monitor. Or you can touchscreen it and get it dead on, then rack focus manually as they move. But you know you started with perfect focus. Really... you need to see this. Each will find a different way to add it to the arsenal. Or not. MF is always an option... just like you have always done. But my bet is that most will find a way to embrace this technology, not unlike how the still world has with DSLRs. Options are good. Trust me when I tell you this is a good option.

Appreciate the 'Euro love' Jim, thanks :).

Thanks too for the focus update info, and also the RED AF lenses reminder. As someone coming from the Dark (stills) Side, this is all very welcome news indeed.

Distinct lack of markings on the fixed zoom barrel makes me wonder 'Is this final or a prototype?'
Will an AC be able to see markings or screen only?

Anyone who has shot a Sony 950 or F23 will embrace Scarlet 2/3" like their lover...

If you use the touchscreen AF, you won't give a shit about markings... :-)

BTW... have you seen the markings?

Jim

Sanjin, relax dude. I'm glad there's an AF option. For the stills work I do, I almost always use AF. It's the only way I get the shots I do. There's no time to MF as well as most the time I'm shooting without looking through the prism or LCD.

Perhaps, I can palm the LCD with a long cable in my left hand and thumb in the focus while I aim and fire with my right hand. That would be sweet.

Jim, is there any chance that the Epic/Scarlet Focus system will interface with motors so it can be used on PL mount lenses? Would be great replacement to existing remote focus systems.

Jim,

you are totally right here.

To have option of both AF and MF is the best and probably with RED newest offers that have both AF/MF system on Epic and Scarlet can be the future of cine style shooting too...

Not seen much of the fixed as its like 'top secret' or something but mad curious as are we all.

Thoughts on markings are for crew.

Can I hand off the touch screen to a crew member for focus pulling and still have a RED screen with all read outs for my own use?

Yes. There is always a "but".

Yes. But now you know why this project is taking so long. The complexity of capabilities is not easy and takes time. We know what everyone wants. Delivering everything is a monumental task. No one has ever done this stuff before...

Jim

Now that is truly awesome

I don't expect anything less than the best from you Mr Jannard.
That is the brand you have built and no doubt it will be your legacy.

It's 3:40 in the morning
You are the man
Get some rest
Thank you for following up on the tease last night
I knew you weren't going to leave me sad for long

After midnight miracle crew in full effect :grouphug:

This is HUGE, something I've wanted for a long time. I love the ability to choose the way it ramps, snap or roll, that's smart. The touchscreen idea blows my mind, it's another reason why I would want a larger screen too, eyes getting older...

My Czech wife is calling me to bed. She gave me that "look". :-) She loves the program and the commitment to Europe (for obvious reasons) but she also knows that I am a bear if I only get a couple of hours sleep. Note: she is up with me...

I'll be back online soon.

I concur. This is effectively revolutionary (and your wife is fully accurate ;-)

As same as any tool, we must have to learn to optimize it, no more no less.

Thanks boys and to your best second half(s),

E. :-)

PS: The mini, they're still only manual, right?
