  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Focus....

Question: Will there be a detachable lens hood for the Scarlet Fixed? Is it asking too much for it to have a built-in lens flap (cover) with a switch? This is one of the features I really liked about the EX1.

Thanks,
Phil

How long until I could actually hold a scarlet with fixed zoom, 2 batteries+charger, the focus grip and LCD in my hands?

And how much would I be spending? around 5k$ ?

I am ready....

To support that you would need D.C power and a serial communications port for the motor (or the motor controller)

Those features are provided on the Base I/O and Pro I/O Modules .... plus extra I/O and a 2nd viewfinder output.

Great...that will be nice

We do understand that many people already own one of these companies lenses (or both). We want to give our customers as many options as possible.

Nice to know my Canon set is going to work on EPIC... but I'll definitely give a look to the RED AF lenses. Are they going to use a proprietary mount?

Actually, what would be genius is if people could order a RED lens with either Nikon or Canon mount. You might start selling RED lenses to owners of other bodies. I'm thinking that's a good thing. It would make it easier for people to give that first RED lens a try. If they fall in love then they are buying more.

Breathing in the real world on my Canon's has been no issue for me. I've shot hundreds of hours and pulled many types of challenging focus and have never once had anyone comment on breathing. You just can't see it in real world shots where the focus change is from 4 to 12 feet or whatever.

Sharpness... eh... it's going to be tough to sell me on that one too. Not saying it's impossible but I've yet to have a day on my RED so far I wished I had more resolution than what I'm already getting.

What I WOULD pay for fast lens switching/setup with variable FF sensitivity along with rock solid wireless FF (through walls) and characterized lenses that give accurate/repeatable distance readouts. Get that stuff working and I'm sold. I'm way more interested in usability. Maybe that's not the sexy stuff that excites some people but I believe it is why people buy PL lenses and Preston's despite their size and expense.

Of course - if you get auto focus tracking working then that'll just be amazing. That could change the way movies are made. I mean, if I can grab a camera and shoot meaningful narrative scenes with no help... wow.

I just think smaller, lighter, ultrafast internal motor lenses are the future. Glad you're working on it. :-)

This year (late) and under $10K.

Probably been asked and answered elsewhere but will the RED electronic lenses have power zoom as well as electronic iris and focus?

I'm guessing an underwater housing that connects straight to the cooling ports on the Epic and Scarlet bodies would be cool, allowing the water itself cool the camera. There would always be the option of selling a special fan meant for underwater usage :ihih:

Certainly doable, but maybe more trouble than it is worth. :)

just a quick question: will the red mini primes for the 2/3 scarlet have electronic focus control ?

In previous threads he stated it would be out this year. Which would make a lot of sense to have it out by Christmas b/c of the market it's designed for.

cummon guys... we all know the routine when it comes to Red and shippping dates. I wouldn't get hopes up until there is an actual unit leaving their doors.

This thread is getting pretty big now so I apologize if it was answered before.

Will the 24-75mm AF be significantly lighter than the 18-85mm? It looks smaller.

How about a Vocas matte box?

It is smaller and lighter than the 18-85mm. But we haven't posted a pic of it yet. Not sure which lens you are looking at that you think is the 24-75mm.

Good point. I was thinking about it from a cinema or ENG viewpoint. Myopic, as usual ;) How does the Phantom do it? If I'm not mistaken, people use the Phantom on sidelines for big-budget live sports, and everything seems to be focused well.

Smaller sensor, wider framing, much, much deeper depth-of-field. Since video is about the motion, it's often framed much wider than stills are so that the motion is placed in its context. Sports stills are often more tightly framed to concentrate attention on the subject. Depth-of-field is highly sensitive to the size of the focal plane so tighter framing means much shallower depth-of-field and therefore it's much more demanding of the focusing system.

Watch the framing on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FApe9c-uI8U

And then look at the framing on this still:
