  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Look - Schneider Xenon FF-Prime Lenses

Got my hands on one of the 25mm xenon Schneider lenses, the front element is much smaller than pictured. Does anyone know if this is this a new design?

I got some zeiss 95mm T* UV cutting filters for mine and it seems to have noticeably reduced the CA, not entirely sure why that is but I won't complain.

Just shot a music video on Nick Fury's set of Xenons. He has the full set so I was finally able to shoot with the 25mm. I think that's my favorite lens in the set. These shots are from the 25mm. Heavy grain added in post. Shot on Dragon at 250ISO with only natural light, no augmentation.

Wow! Those two shots are gorgeous!

Thanks Marcus!

These look great Matt. Are these wide open? I know you weren't the biggest fan of these lenses.

Thanks Bob! The set is definitely growing on me. Weird thing is, some situations where I expect the most CA, I end up not seeing any. Other instances it shows up. Still haven't quite figured out the formula but it didn't show up much on this shoot and this should be one that stressed the lenses. I used the Firecrest ND's in front of the lenses so I'm wondering if that helped with CA, though I doubt it.

Shot these with Firecrest 1.2ND, 250ISO on Dragon in 6KWS, mostly wide open.

Just as an example on the cleanliness of Dragon (for anyone who doesn't like the grain), here's one of the shots without grain. I love Dragon!

Nice looking shots there Matt.

Totally agree about that 25mm. It's a pretty darn nice lens.

And about the UV Filter improving CA. Yep, that's one of the possible ways to tackle CA on shots that are wide open with various lenses. Doesn't work all the time, but it can diminish the fringing, specifically axial fringing.

Thanks Phil. Good to hear about the UV filtration. Might be good for owners to have installed on their lenses.

Just a FYI, but I'm selling my 35mm. I'm keeping the others in the set, but I don't need the 35 right now...and I need to cash for other things!!

I'll give a 5% credit for Redusers if you PM me and send payment through verified PayPal. I love my other Xenon's, so if you wanted to grab one in the set for a deep discount (Around 23% off total MSRP for Redusers) and then buy the rest of the three piece lens set at full price (50mm and 75mm) you'll actually be getting a GREAT deal!

Hi everyone, I'm curious if anyone has shot on both the 35mm Schneider Xenon FF as well as the 25mm Xenon FF?

I am gearing up to do a 1 lens short this summer and have narrowed my choices down to the Xenon FF 25 & 35. Any insight or advice on the 25mm performance (distortion, CA, etc.) in comparison to the 35 would be much appreciated.

I can't seem to find much about this comparative information anywhere. Lots on the 35,50,75 though.

There are very few of the 25mm in circulation so far. I only know of 2 of them. Most of us that have them on order are still waiting...

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I had a sneaking suspicion that was the case but was hoping maybe there was some elusive comparison out there. Oh well... you win some, you lose some.

Indeed, I only got one of 3... A beauty and worth the wait for those using Xenon's... :)

Will post some BTS form our Vegas Shoots prior NAB.

The 25mm is the better lens when compared to the 35 in my opinion. Used it on a shoot so didn't have a straight forward comparison, but I felt the sharpness and CA was better on the 25 than the 35. But that's subjective and still open to correction when a proper comparison comes about. My personal preference would be to use the 25mm, but I like the wider field of view and the ability to get in closer on the action. Just my personal taste.

If you're in LA, Nick Fury (949-689-5614 , srgtfury@gmail.com) has the entire Xenon range that is available right now, 25-100. So contact him for a rental if you want to check it out yourself. Definitely a great set going forward with the VistaVision size sensor coming for Weapon.

I believe there are more in the UK/Europe. It only took 3 days after order for my 25mm to arrive. I heard Manfrotto took over the distribution and are not doing a great job. No idea how true that is.

I am a fan of the wider FOV as well. Was hoping to hear some good things about the 25's performance - which seems to be the case - so I may lean in this direction after all.

I've been really happy with my set so far. Great skin tones! Nicely matched. I received my 25mm in early March and its as lovely as the rest.

Question. My set is currently set up in EF, but I need to switch them over to PL (I have all the PL mounts). I'm debating between having Abel do this (I'm in NYC) or switching them out myself.

What makes me nervous is that the Xenons use a phillip screw, instead of an allen or star head. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good torque screw driver, as I'm concerned about stripping the phillips. I love the set all around, but the use of phillip screws on the mounts seems foolish.

Most mounts, if not all, use phillips screws... take it easy. They are very hard screws, stainless steel, they do not strip that easy...
