  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Look - Schneider Xenon FF-Prime Lenses

Picked mine up this week... I was next in line after Ketch at Filmtools. Great first impressions, but I haven't done serious shooting with them yet. Unlike Ketch, there's no Leica glass in my future (I wish!), so these will be my primary set for quite some time. Sounds like the 100mm will be coming next, so I'm tempted by the GL rehoused 18-35 to cover the wide end... wish it covered 6k throughout its range though.

Nice Tim,

you'll love them, but if you were right behind me why did you just get them this week? Got our two sets with the very first batch of delivered lenses in the US.

Don't worry, soon or later you'll be in a position to get your Leica's as well... Always be positive... ;)

While I agree with Bob to a certain degree, when talking about the 18-35 vs the Xenon 25mm, I must say that a zoom is nice and flexible, yet been that in Cine production time is always also of essence, having all lenses of exact same size, length and weigh or as close as possible always gel;ps speed up the lens change process, especially when using FF system and MB, having said that, it is also nice to have choices in glass, and a nice zoom such as the 18-35 can't hurt having.

The GL 18-35 is covering 6k starting at 21mm. Give me a call or send me a pm, if you want some more info about the GL 18-35 lens or want to buy it

That's the problem ketch, the 25mm Shneider is going to weigh more than the others in the set. The rehoused 18-35 is actually closer is weight. Ha ha. I did order the 100mm though and hopefully a macro from them.

He he, it will be marginal, while size and overall length and other diameter and screw in filter sizes remain the same, and same goes for the Focus Iris rings making it still a better choice IMO for Cine work when it comes to lens changes and insuring quicker lens changes... Also for me, getting a Zoom only for 14mm worth of zooming is just not that interesting... Much prefer having a zoom on the telephoto slide of things like the 70-200... While the 24-290 sure is still one of my most favorited cine Zooms... pricey pricey of course... ;)

You got the last of the PL sets from the first drop. They anticipated more EF demand, and wound up with not enough PL, so I had to wait. Indeed, Filmtools has EF in stock now if anyone is interested.

I'm committed to get the 25, but delivery is a ways out yet. Knowing that there likely will not be an 18 (my understanding is that they will only go as wide as 20 or 21 in a future lens), the GL gets me coverage now and wider range than I'll ultimately have with Xenons. That said, FF coverage is what decided me on the Xenons. I'm less worried about the weight/size than the image circle, but those are fair points as well.

Hi Bob. What are your thoughts on inter-cutting the Xenons and GL? Do you feel they are a reasonable match?

… having all lenses of exact same size, length and weigh or as close as possible always gel;ps speed up the lens change process…

Ketch, I ordered my 18-35 with a 100mm front to accommodate fast lens changes with a clip-on mattebox. It was a small, extra charge but David and Nan were very helpful.

Alex, I'm very interested in seeing the 100mm front...could you possibly post a photo or two of your 18-35? I've also been thinking about combining the 18-35 with the Xenons, and they have a 100mm front diameter. It would certainly be a lot more convenient to not have to change the mattebox adapter ring every time I put the zoom on or took it off...

.
...but to mix Schneider look with Sigma look....will it match..

I see Tim.

Good thinking Alex.

What other focal lengths are they expected to show at NAB?

If they succeed time wise they could have the 25mm & 100mm Prototypes.

I'm expecting some new announcements on the long and short end (beyond the already announced 100 and 25), but it sounds unlikely they will go below 20mm for cost reasons. Still, the addition of a longer lens and a wider lens will flesh out the set nicely.
