  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Look - Schneider Xenon FF-Prime Lenses

There has been a lot of talk about Chromatic Aberration from the Xenons on this page. I personally own the Xenar IIIs and even those have some amount of CA. When I first saw this I was a bit concerned but then decided to compare them to a proven set like the Cooke miniS4s. I will be posting a write up, photos, and a video about this comparison. The lesson to take away from this for both the Xenars and Xenons is not that they have CA, but how do they compare to other lenses in the price range.

The test results will be posted on this thread in a few days. http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?111456-Schneider-Xenar-III-vs-Cooke-MiniS4-Shootout

Ok, so some news:

I spoke to the person that designed these lenses today. He said that although these lenses exhibit some CA, whether you're using $4k lenses or $40k lenses, there will be a bit of CA. If you open up the Xenons to T/2.1, you'll definitely get a bit of CA when pointing at a light source. Regardless, these lenses were designed to outperform all others (and, for some, outlive them, as this has a huge image circle).

He also mentioned the sweet spot for the Schneider Xenons is going to definitely be right around T/2.8 - T/4.0.

I'm convinced this lens set looks great and can't wait for all of them to arrive in Chicago!

Brendan, I think your statement is right on point. Even master primes exhibit CA under certain conditions. The best I've seen is from the Leicas which really have a strangle hold on aberration. I just posted my lens comparison video of the Xenar IIIs and Cooke miniS4s a few minutes ago. You'll see that even the Cookes under the right conditions will show purple fringing among other characteristics. http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthr...iniS4-Shootout

How do you define "outperform all others"? The Xenon 50mm appeared to be the softest at T2 in the Magnanimous test. And it's image circle is no larger than a CP2 or CN-E.

That said, I'm sure these lenses are great. But like most things in life (that aren't Leica C's haha), they are rarely perfect, nor do they need to be.

Sorry, let my own bias slip in! From what I've seen, they look great, and have a larger coverage area than some of the other lenses that have been popping up on the Dragon Sensor Lens Coverage thread (some of those appear to cost quite a bit more too!)

just amazing..
so much talk and no video comparison to be seen anywhere...perhaps they only sold 5 sets worldwide ;-)

I would have posted some images but my camera isn't back from the upgrade yet.

That said, it is interesting how some people just expect these magic lens and camera tests to appear. I will post images, but I will not be taking the time to run through a gamut of lens tests against cp.2, canon or any other glass. Use your time and resources to check out these things in person for yourself. I purchased these lenses because I liked what I saw from Phil's initial images and the example footage posted by Schneider. Not because I needed to see how many lines they resolved.

Thanks ,
but i can not get hold of lenses in Sydney, they do not have them here.
I was hoping for some tests against other brands, oh well...

Anyone received new set? absolut silence from sellers, anxiety raising

I ordered mine from filmtools a month ago. Should get them by July in PL mount.

The Schneider Xenon are amazing lenses, very happy I went with them, and I was right when I was saying that most likely this would hold me up just fine till the arrival of my Leica C primes... ;)

We'll start showing off footage right before or at NAB with various Imagery and a Short... Or two... ;)

PS: Since we have Ordered/Purchased and Received several sets, and currently I am the only one shooting, we decided to sale one set now and a second set before NAB, and only keep one set for myself.

So in case some one here can't source one in PL mount just PM me, one set that we could let go of now is brand new and never used, the second one we'll let go of before NAB will be one of the two sets only used by me personally on Dragon M8, so either way you'll get as brand new lenses.

Any ways, here I said it, but hope that any one here looking for them can source them right of way form their respective stores with whom they ordered them from, if in a spot to get a set now then you know what to do... ;)

Btw, while we were very happy to be one of the very first to receive this great lenses, I wasn't so particularly crazy about the HUGE Boxes they shipped in, but LOVE the new Boxes... ;)

This are very well designed and the lenses in them despite the boxes been very compact almost equaling the size of the lenses, offer great protection, and an easy to remove two piece Laser Cut foam in order to extract the lenses, or you can just pull out the all top half piece of the Foam... ;)

Nice cases and pictures...
Now how would they go against CNEs,CP2s or Otus ;-)

Picked mine up this week... I was next in line after Ketch at Filmtools. Great first impressions, but I haven't done serious shooting with them yet. Unlike Ketch, there's no Leica glass in my future (I wish!), so these will be my primary set for quite some time. Sounds like the 100mm will be coming next, so I'm tempted by the GL rehoused 18-35 to cover the wide end... wish it covered 6k throughout its range though.

Congrats Tim. The 18-35 is a far better deal than the Schneider 25mm though.
