  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Firmware 6.2.44 issues

Support has been great. I may be having single camera issues so Red has requested that I send in my body and mount for testing in Irvine. I will miss her but I am happy they have taken such an interest.

Hi Peter,

RED has helped me with these issues too.

There are a few things that I've made common practice when using Nikon mount lenses with my Epic M Dragon that I wanted to share. They don't always work, but they have helped me out a great deal.

1) When I upgrade firmware, I always switch mounts to EOS or PL, install the firmware, and then switch back to the Nikon mount after the firmware has been installed. This may be unnecessary but Ive taken to the practice anyway.

2) Everytime I change a nikon mount lens, I always stop down all the way before removing the lens. This seems to be a very effective preventative measure.

3) If I find myself in a situation wherein I switch a lens and suddenly lose control of iris, I switch to a lens with electronics AND a manual aperture control ring. I stop that ring down all of the way, mount and unmount (first taking care to stop down all of the way electronically). The lenses i have that have electronics and a manual ring are tokina atx pro zooms, Rokinon primes, and a nikkor macro. The ATX pro zooms are the ones i most often use for the purpose of mounting and unmounting to regain control of iris.

If you notice anyting else or have success with any of these methhods, please let me know. I'm glad to see so many Nikkor users discussing an important issue.

Best,
Adam

Adam,

Thank you for some of those helpful hints. My Weapon is packed up for its trip today to Irvine but I will try those ideas in the future. I only wish the Nikon mount and software was as hiccup free as the EOS mount. I will let everyone know when I get my camera back next week.

Great info Adam, thanks for sharing!

I tested the replacement mount today with 6.0.44, 6.2.55 and 6.3.6. I don't know why, but it is a different world, not perfect, but most lenses that work under 6.0.44 are now able to change aperture under 6.2.55 and ALL my lenses work under 6.3.6. My old mount did not work at all!

I have to say 6.3.6 comes very close to 6.0.44, 6.2.55 had many issues in my test. There is just this odd thing that some lenses change aperture very very slow compared to 6.0.44, especially going from f14 to higher numbers. I rolled back to 6.0.44 and informed support about my results for every single lens. I will hand off my old mount to RED NYC next week, they will forward it to RED Irvine for examination.

So nice to see that things are moving! :-)

Hey Andre

Thanks so much for the detailed update, I've been sticking with 6.0.44 as we had Jobs to shoot, it sounds like Red might be nearly there.

Yeah, I too have that wish. I have many Nikkor lenses and many other lenses that have been converted to Nikon mount over the years. I've been collecting them for almost my entire life since the first camera I ever owned was a Nikon FA.

It's a versatile mount when it comes to still camera lenses and I've had Duclos modify so many lenses for me in the past few years - many of which are Nikon mount - so I'm happy everyone is working together to fine tune some of the Nikon mount related issues.

The red Nikon mount was actually one of the main reasons I purchased a dragon when I did. It would be difficult for someone like me to own a camera that couldn't accept Nikon mount lenses. Hope your camera and mount come back from Irvine happy.

Is anyone using the latest firmware and having complete success with the Nikon lenses?

Is 6.0.44 the best firmware to stay with at the moment ?

Thank you

I got another mount from RED and tried the latest and had the same problems. I got FedEx confirmation that they have my mount but I think that's barking up the wrong tree. Red needs to figure out what changed in the firmware after 6.0.44. I'm stuck on 6.0.44. It's not an immediate problem for me as I have a Scarlet Dragon and firmware improvements are naturally targeting new features unsupported on it. If I had a Weapon, I'd be more concerned. It used to work. As a software developer myself, I'd look to what changed.

I will drop my mount off tomorrow. The replacement one works much better, especially with 6.3.6., not so much with 6.2.55. I have no idea what the difference is between the mounts, during firmware upgrades and downgrandes it was always updated as well. The mount looked the same. The only weird thing with 6.3.6, in my case, is that the apertures changes super slow starting f14. Some lenses took about 10 seconds to go f14 to f22. Thats unusual isn't it?

But you are right, I am 6.0.44 on a Scarlet Dragon as well, no need to change that. But I am thinking/planning/dreaming to get a Scarlet-W later this year, I hope Nikon works by then, not too eager buying Canon lenses :-)

Hey Guys. I tested the newest Beta v6.3.10 and all my lenses are working great for iris control. I tried the latest release v6.2.57 but had the same iris control problems. I'm going to leave the beta on here and do a little more testing but it looks really good so far.

Oh, that is great news!!! Thanks Hugh for testing and letting us know! :-)

Are you going to use the Beta for actual productions ? Does it seem solid enough so far ?

I didn't notice anything flakey. I'm going to keep the beta on there. I'll let you know if I see anything.

Got my Weapon back and the new Nikon mount from Irvine. Everything works great now. The Nikon mount is a lot trickier design than the Canon because of the iris motor requirements.
But I have to say that my old mount and older firmware worked perfectly throughout my shooting in the jungles of Dominican Republic.
Good luck to all of you and again the great folks at Red really did take an interest and helped.
