  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When done with black shading... shouldn't the picture be noiseless with the body cap on, at 800 ISO?

I know that this has been discussed on here many times before... I'm experiencing noisy shadows. The subject is well lit, in both tungsten and daylight, but the shadows are noisy. 2k HD, 240 fps, 1/696th, RC 6:1, ISO 800. Followed all the right procedures for black shading. Body cap, camera up to temp, and dark room. For interior shots using tungsten, should I light the shadows or light the subject for 320 ISO when shooting in 2k? Shouldn't dark shadows at 800 ISO even in 2k be clean?

At 2K you are essentially zooming into the middle of the sensor so noise will be way more apparent than at 4/5k. The noise will also appear larger because of the crop in on the sensor.

As to the OP, you should have noiseless images up to 2,500ISO with the lens cap on. If there is noise your black calibration has failed or is set improperly or has a hardware issue.

Thank you so much. And 2,500 ISO with body cap on, is heavily noisy for me. There was no indication that the calibration failed. Does it matter if its in factory or user before I hit the button for black calibration for current frame/shutter speed? That has nothing to do with it right? I tried both anyway. Still the same results.

Factory is pre set and can't be changed. User is for your own calibration. Make sure your monitor is also at the correct brightness or that could be another reason your seeing a bit of noise. It could be amplifying the dark in the monitor giving the appearance of noise. Also make sure all the meta is set to factory other than ISO and White Balance. Switching into tungsten will start to show more noise than daylight.

Thanks for the quick response! Thats how I understood factory and user, but I thought I might of been missing something. Monitor is fine. Footage looks worse when viewed on larger computer screen... Meta all set to factory. Also some of the shots I've done in direct sunlight are even noisy. I was shooting some wakeboarding on the lake and the talents black life jacket was all noisy at 800 ISO. Brought down to 320ISO in RCX fixes the issue, but is largely under exposed...

You might want to file a support ticket and email support an R3D grab. That would help them figure out the issue. I've used the Epic and Scarlet several times now and haven't had noise like you describe. Are you running the most recent firmware? Do you do the blackshade after the camera has warmed up for 15 minutes, or cold?

I've done that already but haven't sent a R3D yet. And yes warmed up for 15-20 min. I was told that i will see some noise with high frame rates at 2k. That i should shoot at 800 ISO to protect the highlights and crush the blacks if need be. But everything i hear and read says that you shouldn't see much noise at 800 ISO even in 2k... I'm just a little confused with things. I'm seeing a good amount of noise in shadows and objects that are black, even in direct sunlight. Think I might call OFFHOLLYWOOD tomorrow and see if they can test it when I'm there.

No problem, sorry I couldn't help more. Out of curiosity what is your compression ratio? Compression can get chunky and at 2k noise is already chunky due to the fact your effectively zooming in on the sensor. Just another possibility. At higher frame rates I personally rate the camera a little lower to reduce noise. But thats just me.

You're still a help... and RC 6:1, 2k HD, 240 fps, 800 ISO, 1/696th. Yeah I hope its just my error and OFFHOLLYWOOD can maybe point it out...
