  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Final Cut Rumor......2013 :(

Lot of 3D Bravias to sell. :)

I remember Vegas chewing anything on the timeline back when Premiere and Final Cut were in format-support special olympics. If you threw a chair on the timeline it would munch it. Realtime.

I wonder how they'll do 64 bit support with a 32 bit QuickTime? That's right folks, most of QuickTime is not 64 bit and has to be before FCP can go to 64 bit. And there's no QT development being done at least not in OS X...

Ok no KNOWN development happening on QT, But then again we tend to KNOW about apple products and development about a month before it is released. And did you just quote yourself.... LOL thats awesome. If you read my second post I very clearly stated that Apple had to rewrite quicktime. But then i am just quoting myself.

I'm dragging my feet to get around to testing Resolve - it just turns my stomach to buy a board from Blackmagic - but I'll suck it up and test - curious about the 3D support - anyone testing that - please post some stuff.

I'm in the same boat. I haven't bit the bullet and purchased Resolve as I don't need it yet. I'm hoping that BMD makes good on their word from NAB about support for AJA cards. Really hoping that Kona 3G I'm about to buy will be supported.

Vegas is awesome. It's still the Sonic Foundry team in charge of Vegas development and all the other related tools. Sony has still not taken over control even now several years after the acquisition. Vegas was my main NLE for several years... I actually had to move over to FCP in order to get the support I needed for the two HVX200 cameras I bought way back when. I've always maintained a current copy of Vegas and use it here and there. Great support for RED workflow and I don't think it gets all the credit deserved when people discuss options around here.

IMO, Vegas should be the #1 choice for the Scarlet crowd and many who are not really interested in the Adobe Production Suite or Master Collection or willing to pay for MC5.

Yup. Anyone that thinks Avid is asleep doesn't know what's up.

Avid was asleep, now it's Apple. They basically started their downfall by discontinuing Shake, refusing to support Blu-Ray. Final Cut studio is now just a toy - what is done is done - it's too little too late. They had a chance to have a 16-bit quicktime versus the 8 bit limit. They turned of **A lot** of people with their lacklustre upgrade to FCS.

Because the one b.s. rumor is stimulating months, that are now easing into years, of frustration at Apple's inability to keep up with their competition in the NLE space.

. And it isn't about the ability of the engineers, then what is the hold-up?

These companies dont have coordinated releases. As Craig said, apple was out ahead in terms of total package. Then because they are on a little different schedules the others leapfrog but there is every possibility that apple will leapfrog ahead with their next release. they have made it clear for several years that their goal was a complete rework, not just a 64 bit update.

Presumably that takes time but they aren't desperate for the money so why not take the time? But it seems like people can't keep that thought in mind. The percentage of .R3d production is minuscule, and even there probably 50% goes thru prores/fcs. So what's the big incentive form them to rush out another release. You guys crucified them for bringing out an interim upgrade and many insist on calling it FCS 3.0 even though apple doesn't and never represented it as THE major upgrade.

Who knows maybe they are just waiting on Red to finally get epic out. :).

And why should they, when there are better products in release? It doesn't make a lot of sense to wait on something which may or may not ever happen. And the competition doesn't exactly appear to be sitting still, waiting to be leap-frogged...Adobe, MC5, and The Foundry are innovating fast in the space.

Good times.

It's fun seeing the old Avid arguments of defense pop'ing up on the FCP side. It is symptomatic...

That said: I'll run one...

On bigger facilities, there is a lot more to workflows than the NLE at hand. It needs like 6-12 months of testing to implement into the total chain, because f###-ups are just not allowable.

This again means that one often are far behind "the latest release". One place I work, Snow Leopard is not yet in use, because how it administers users and how that interfaces with different software (I am no network admin, so I cannot be specific). When there comes a FCP update, it trickles out to the user 3 months later, at first. Because we need things to be consistent.

As FCP has trickled into larger facilities (I think we have in the ballpark of 2500-3500 lisences this place alone and use it for everything from news to drama...), it also slows down turnaround considerably.

just thinkin' out loud here...

Really, everything hinges on the rewrite of QuickTime -- about which we've heard almost nothing. I saw some comments from a dedicated QT programmer who pushed hard about developments at the WWDC this summer. NDA prevented him from spilling the beans, but he coyly suggested he was pleased with what he heard. He also hinted that there was some kind of left-brain shift involved in the forward path. My inference was that the 64-bit QuickTime involves some legacy crap getting left behind. Whether that makes us happy or sad remains to be seen. Certainly none of would consider QuickTime X to be fully functional at this point.

I was on it for several years also. Nice NLE. Completely agree, I often recommend it. Has a few very cool solutions. With time-remapping it runs around FCP and kicks it in the butt with every circle.

It must be the Google translator plugin.

LOL! And virtually ever film over $501K cuts on Avid.

I remember these arguments when it was Steenbeck v Moviola v Kem. The old tossers said, "real editors cut standing up". Moviolas, may have been the greatest cutting tool in the history of the world, but I never liked them, mainly because there was nowhere to put a glass of wine, but also because I didn't want to stand bent-over a flickering light slowly going blind and developing an irreversible curvature of the spine.

I feel the same way about Avid. Though, with Avid it's more the rigid work flow and uninspiring UI that leaves me flat rather than the lack of a wine rack and comfy chair. I don't want to work Avid's way, I want to work my way.

I'm as disappointed as anyone that Apple hasn't developed FCS into the suite of products it should be today, maybe their time has passed and we need to look to new players in the market - not Avid though - their time passed long ago, just like those old tossers with their bad eyes and dodgy backs...

Maybe if we could just get Jim to take a half hour away from his prime directive of getting Epic and Scarlet built and give Steve a call! Basically, if he could just let Steve know that there are all these guys who either are or will be shooting R3D and many of us really want FCP to play well with RED.

Jim, whatta ya think? Could you do that for us? Please. :Angel_anim:
