  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I would love the option to shoot 720p or even 480p proxies at the same time as 8k R3D.

I'm shooting a lot of interviews that burn through card/hd space. I've tried to find a balance of compression ratio and pro-res flavor that makes sense, but in the end it usually makes more sense to either shoot 8k R3D only, or 4k pro-res only. Either way, I end up needing to make lower resolution proxies.

It would also be nice to be able to shoot 4k pro-res and 480p/360p pro res lt at the same time. I think that would be my favorite option for lightweight/laptop post workflows.

To avoid the risk of people accidentally shooting in 480/360 only, these options would only be available when shooting dual formats and greyed out otherwise.

Thoughts?

All proxy recorders need to have frame accurate and matching timecodes as well as clip names or else its not worth the trouble.

Exactly right.

Get a Pix-E5, Atomos Recorder or Blackmagic Video Assist instead. More features plus a nice screen.

I have a shogun flame but most of the time I'm on the move and don't want to mount that beast just to record 720p proxies...especially if my camera absolutely has the potential/power to handle that task for me, with frame accurate timecode and exact naming convention.

That's why I was looking at the smaller proxy recorder myself. Small footprint. Timecode - start stop recording. Seems useful and it is available now unlike waiting on a software solution.

Be aware. External recorders are not giving you perfect sync... this been discussed at length in other threads so not a good option to use clips from such to do a offline edit and then relink to r3d´s, you are randomly +/- 2 frames or such. Not to mention that you can not do over cranked etc. That is what stopped the epic prores recorder that we saw prototypes off. Simply what comes out of the SDI or HDMI is not in perfect sync with the r3d.

To me super compressed HD proxies would be magic. We shot 5 alexas for 2 weeks and needed to upload all source footage to a ftp so the offline editors in different country could start edit the same day as the material was captured. To have super lightweight files straight from camera would be a true blessing. Something half the weight of prores proxy or such.

There is a fairly simple solution that Red could implement and that is to support Prores 422 Proxy with a data rate of 38 Mbps (at 25P) rather than Prores 422 LT which has a data rate of 85 Mbps. There may be technical difficulties with implementing Apple's Prores 422 Proxy format but I assume Red has all the licence stuff already in the can? I really wouldn't want to see a proxy file smaller than 720p.

Prores proxy at 720p would be an incredibly lightweight option.

I'm currently working with 640x360 proxies created from 4k prores source files straight out of the camera. It's a perfect workflow for editing on a macbook pro.

Looks like a good solution, but the idea is to avoid all of this. Premiere's ingest software works really well already.

The point is - it’s really not an “all this” process.

You can use this to copy and checksum cards and at the same time generate your proxies in a way that doesn’t bog the computer down. It’s an incredibly automated and fast process that doesn’t need “tending”

Ask gunleik.

...it is though.

...it is though.

Do you edit directly off your cards or do you back them up on two drives before beginning to edit ?

If you backup your cards, replace shotput pro or hedge or whatever with QI and you won’t notice any difference except you have the proxy types you want already.

Your loss if you’re not even looking at it because of preformed assumptions.

Did I mention it’s free right now too?
