  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCP-CF-RX worflow step by step

Fcp-clipfinder-redcine-x-dpx workflow

Fcp-clipfinder-redcine-x-dpx workflow

I am currentIy completing a DPX finish of a feature film. I am doing this with Clipfinder 2.5 (test build) and I am really impressed with the experience I have had with this piece of software and its developer Hans-Georg Daun. Up until two days ago I was racking my brain trying to figure out what was going on and why the workflow was not working for me.

So I finally figured out that Clipfinder was not able to handle DPX files for its feature "Run Conform on FCP XML".

As of its current version it cannot handle the DPX files, but that is going to be changing soon.

I got in touch with Hans and his response was very quick. He explained that Clipfinder was not able to read the DPX files, but he didn't stop there. He worked on the software for the next 2 days and we ended up going back and forth and he was able to modify some parts of the software to allow for DPX files to be conformed and also the ability to add handles to the DPX files.

I have never used Clipfinder before as I was used to doing the FCP whitepaper workflows, from FCP to color and back to FCP and that is also how this project began but I was able to switch to DPX for the online which is amazing. I was so impressed by the support, Hans was extremely helpful in assisting us to get DPX files to work for our online, he worked around he clock to get our project moving, and along with the actual software that I felt I had to post here to let other people know of the value of the product. Now that I have tried Clipfinder I will not be going back to the FCP Log and Transfer workflow.

I have been told by Hans that the next official release will be able to handle DPX files and also apply handles to them which will be important for your transitions, so for anybody looking to do DPX finishes this will be great.

I am working with a test build but the next official release will include the same features. The steps below are for the test build but when the next official build comes out you can follow these steps.

I had begun my project the FCP-Color-FCP roundtrip method.

In Clipfinder when importing the FCP XML

- go to File -> Import Clips from FCP XML

settings selected for this are:

extract clip name from <pathurl> tag

(if you have used FCP Log and Transfer to start your workflow then use <name> tag instead>

import subclips should be checked (enabled) when importing from the XML file. This will make sure only the relevant sections of the clips are import and rendered.

merge mode = none

add 48 frame handles (this is adjustable if you need longer handles for your transitions)

the files from the XML are imported into clipfinder. Select All.

2) Tools -> Replace Mov with R3D (to go back to original)

3) Edit -> Send to Redcine-X timeline

4) Export from Redcine-X (seperate folders for each DPX sequence)

5) Tools -> Run conform on FCP XML file

select input and output XML

extract clip from <pathurl> tag

(again if you have started your workflow with FCP Log and Transfer thank please use <name> tag instead)

replace clips with DPX

use only first 9 or 16 characters

insert file resolution size

clip directories: point to DPX file sequence folders

run conform.

6) open new XML with FCP

7) go into sequence settings and change to DPX

make sure to remove any filters applied in FCP or render them to play sequence realtime

Done

I am so happy with Clipfinder that I am able to complete my DPX finish, what a great product, great support and great value. Anybody looking for DPX finish should get the next build.

RCX doesn´t show "run script"

RCX doesn´t show "run script"

Im going crazy. I have my .lua file, but when i run Redcinex (in any of the versions in the red page, i have downloaded every one of them) in de file tab, there aren´t any "Run script" tool. I can only see "Open clip", "open project" "save Project" and "Save Project as". ¿Can you help me? Maybe is an insignificant thing but i don´t know how yo import mi .lua file to RedCinex. Thanks

Thanks a lot. A lot. A lot. A lot!!! Grading with RedCinex is thousand better than FCP or Color on ProRes 4:2:2!!!!!

Thanks again!

Hans, as you know I'm using also your new beta, above Tom is saying he is using merge mode "none" but as you told me if you have multiple subclips the only way to conform back into FCP is using merge "all". Is it correct?

I'm guessing he is using GlueTools to handle DPX in FCP. In this case merge "all" may not be necessary, as I think GlueTools will handle a folder full of DPXs with missing frames, so you don't need to render the in between frames.

This is just my guess, so Hans needs to confirm.

Yes, you need Gluetools to be able to view DPX in FCP, and no, GlueTools does not help with conforming multiple subclips (missing frames are treated as the end of a clip).

So congratulations. You've cracked FCP conforming. If you have DPX now, I'm guessing QuickTime isn't far away.

You know where to send the beta for testing!

Wow, I'm waiting too :hurray:

Updated 28 March.
With the new release of Redcinex 183 and Clipfinder 2.5 beta 3 now it's possible to conform and go back to FCP.
My way:
1 Export an XML from FCP
2 In Clipfinder 2.5 b3 choose File>Import Clips from FCP XML
3 In the import window select the XML, check import subclips, choose all
4 In Clipfinder>Edit>Send to RedcineX>Timeline
RedcineX will start and in the timeline there will be all clips used in FCP XML
5 Grade the clips
6 In RedcineX>Window>export tool, click on the plus, in the export settings choose a name, choose a format, resolution and debayer settings (i.e. quicktime prores 4444 1920x1080 full), in output location choose "output with Clip filename to selected folder", click on "select an output folder" and choose a destination folder or make a new one on your system, hit ok, choose "Timeline (selected clips)", click on RX timeline and press "command-A" (select all) and in the export tool hit export. RX will start the render and it will put the files in the destination folder. You can see the render progress going to RedcineX>Window>batch list.
7 When RX finished the render open Clipfinder>Tools>Run conform on FCP XML file
8 In the conform settings window in the XML input put the path to the XML previously exported from FCP, in the output XML choose a name and file path. Check "use only 9 or 16 characters of filename in input xml", check adjust sequence width and insert the timeline resolution you need (i.e. 1920x1080), in clip directories put the path to the destination folder containing RX renders. Hit run conform.
9 Open or Import the new XML (output XML generated by Clipfinder) in FCP. Check the sequence settings. Check the timeline: all the clips should be in the right order with the right length.
10 Enjoy.

Luca,

I want to purchase this video, but when I go through the checkout process, it asks me for a shipping address. Am I not able to just watch this online?

You can only download it, I think the shipping address doesn't matter. Insert it and than you should receive the link for the download.
Thanks for watching my tutorial.

Hi Luca, it's Michele from Milan, Italy, CIAO!!

I write in english for the community. I'm following your workflow, but I have a problem. I export xml from FC, import as you describe, I have to replace MOV with R3D because I converted all the footages for editing, I export to RedCineX (either 183 and 194, same results) timelime, RedCineX opens, but I have a timeline only with ONE FRAME PER CLIP... I attach a snapshot...

I'm using FC7, Clipfinder 2.5 beta3, and RedCineX 183 (and 194).

What can I do?

Thanks a lot, GRAZIE!!

Michele
