Fcp-clipfinder-redcine-x-dpx workflow
I am currentIy completing a DPX finish of a feature film. I am doing this with Clipfinder 2.5 (test build) and I am really impressed with the experience I have had with this piece of software and its developer Hans-Georg Daun. Up until two days ago I was racking my brain trying to figure out what was going on and why the workflow was not working for me.
So I finally figured out that Clipfinder was not able to handle DPX files for its feature "Run Conform on FCP XML".
As of its current version it cannot handle the DPX files, but that is going to be changing soon.
I got in touch with Hans and his response was very quick. He explained that Clipfinder was not able to read the DPX files, but he didn't stop there. He worked on the software for the next 2 days and we ended up going back and forth and he was able to modify some parts of the software to allow for DPX files to be conformed and also the ability to add handles to the DPX files.
I have never used Clipfinder before as I was used to doing the FCP whitepaper workflows, from FCP to color and back to FCP and that is also how this project began but I was able to switch to DPX for the online which is amazing. I was so impressed by the support, Hans was extremely helpful in assisting us to get DPX files to work for our online, he worked around he clock to get our project moving, and along with the actual software that I felt I had to post here to let other people know of the value of the product. Now that I have tried Clipfinder I will not be going back to the FCP Log and Transfer workflow.
I have been told by Hans that the next official release will be able to handle DPX files and also apply handles to them which will be important for your transitions, so for anybody looking to do DPX finishes this will be great.
I am working with a test build but the next official release will include the same features. The steps below are for the test build but when the next official build comes out you can follow these steps.
I had begun my project the FCP-Color-FCP roundtrip method.
In Clipfinder when importing the FCP XML
- go to File -> Import Clips from FCP XML
settings selected for this are:
extract clip name from <pathurl> tag
(if you have used FCP Log and Transfer to start your workflow then use <name> tag instead>
import subclips should be checked (enabled) when importing from the XML file. This will make sure only the relevant sections of the clips are import and rendered.
merge mode = none
add 48 frame handles (this is adjustable if you need longer handles for your transitions)
the files from the XML are imported into clipfinder. Select All.
2) Tools -> Replace Mov with R3D (to go back to original)
3) Edit -> Send to Redcine-X timeline
4) Export from Redcine-X (seperate folders for each DPX sequence)
5) Tools -> Run conform on FCP XML file
select input and output XML
extract clip from <pathurl> tag
(again if you have started your workflow with FCP Log and Transfer thank please use <name> tag instead)
replace clips with DPX
use only first 9 or 16 characters
insert file resolution size
clip directories: point to DPX file sequence folders
run conform.
6) open new XML with FCP
7) go into sequence settings and change to DPX
make sure to remove any filters applied in FCP or render them to play sequence realtime
Done
I am so happy with Clipfinder that I am able to complete my DPX finish, what a great product, great support and great value. Anybody looking for DPX finish should get the next build.
