In less than 4 months I turn 60 (ouch - pains me to say it) but, partially thanks to RED, I am having the time of my life and fully expect the next two decades to be the most enjoyable, most productive and most satisfying of my life. I LOVE this shit! RED keeps it exciting and I want to personally thank Jim and all his crew for doing what they do. You can get bored with a lot of things over 60 years so it's really cool to find something this much fun when you aren't expecting it.

We began to champion 4K as the respectful replacement for film in the digital motion world back in 2006. We were embraced. We were ignored. We were revolutionary and we were a scam. [...]

1080P and 2K acquisition was the biggest scam in the history of the film industry. [...]

TV shows shot on 1080P or 2K are destined to be left out of a second bite of the apple for a 4K delivery opportunity.

It means that we were right after all. Not that we want to gloat. We are just sad we didn't do a better job of clearly explaining our position to more people over the past 6 years.

EVERYONE in the world can get their hands on a pencil, and a piece of paper, that doesn't mean everyone in the world is a literary genius capable of writing masterpiece novels; or even tacky 'romance' novels for that matter.

Having tools that can create art, and having the artistic ability to create art, have always been and always will be two very different things.

You're buying stuff, then getting stuck in the mud miles back while everyone else is up with the pack. Get yourself out, stop complaining, and move on. Make some money off your gear and see the healthy profits roll in. If you're not doing that, you're doing it wrong.

I don't know about you but If I'm going to shoot professionally and sell jobs to clients I want to be able to tell them I'm shooting the best. Even if the output is only 1080p I would much rather shoot everything at 5k and downrez to 1080p. The value of companies having 5k archives at least in my line of work is invaluable. When cerrtain moments in sports only happen once, I want to make sure I'm sure shooting the highest quality.

A triple-header from that huge thread:

We're lucky that a company like Red even exists to keep kicking this stagnant industry in the ass.

My father taught me to always wear a suit to a meeting...not only will you look good, but it will make you feel good too. Point being, everything I do is an extension of myself...I always want my work to reflect my best...hence, I will whip out my RED any day on any project.

You are agreeing with me. That said, you still need lights, locations, dollies, Steadicams... You need actors who can act and very importantly a script that [is] not a rough first draft. These things take time and money to be any good, no matter how much your camera costs.

One thing I think we sometimes forget about is one of the most valuable assets of all, the thing that can separate us from the pack - people skills!

I understand some will feel frustrated with this announcement. I'm sure this will affect some people's bottom line. But seems like things are getting a bit personal in quite a few threads. People questioning other people's business practices, questioning their decision making, etc. Not sure it's very productive. The prices are what they are, it's a decision RED has made and now current and future owners have some decisions to make. I encourage everyone to be respectful and engage in healthy discourse. You never know when that person you are engaging with might be a future client or colleague. People skills is something that can carry a career a long way.
