It's the delays that are really hurting Scarlet, not the features.

I think Scarlet will find a comfortable and profitable market niche all its own once it is released. There are certainly more alternatives in the under $10k market now than there were two years ago. All involve significant compromises one way or another, chief among them that they are merely long GOP HD video cameras or still cameras with limited video capabilities.

Edit: If I could buy a Red One MX with a smart Canon mount off the shelf, I would do that within a month or two.

Scott: you can do that right now. Buy an MX from RED and buy a Birger mount from Birger and you're off and running. These things are all in stock and working/proven right now.

Regards,

P

If I'm not mistaken you can't buy an MX off the shelf. You have to buy a One and wait your turn for the upgrade. By the time my number came up, I might actually be able to buy an Epic instead. There's really no way to figure that.

In addition, Red no longer supports the Birger mount.

That is why I specified "Off the shelf." Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Fairly certain Birger mount will still void warranty, but the Red One does now ship with MX right from the RED store online.

Thanks Stephen. Red needs to update their website I guess. The product page still says Mysterium.

So that is 50% there... Shame about the mount... Damn shame. Is there a certified service center that can do a Birger installation without voiding the warranty? I'm not aware that it is even a possibility.

Here is the announcement and a pretty thorough discussion from just a week ago...

You'll want to note that the new price is $25,000.

My vote: HDR + Scarlet = YES, although an additional dev delay would make me weep bitter tears.

I just read the HDRx™™™™™ piece by Adam Wilt, and I don't know if I understand it correctly, but isn't HDRx™™™™™ mostly software?
Ofc. the camera needs to be able to write 2 different streams, and it needs to take the double exposure.

But it doesn't appear the camera itself does anything other than that. I don't want to let it sound as if it's not special,
because I think it's an awesome invention. But it just seems to me that the technology is ready for the Scarlet too, if it's usable in the Epic.

So if a Scarlet can handle a 120 fps data stream, it could handle a HDRx™™™™™ data stream on 60 fps.
Or am I making it too simple now, and is there something in there that needs some extra hardware (processing power maybe) ?

It's primarily sensor and supporting in camera electronics/processing capability.

Vote for no further delays...

Vote for no further delays...

If Jim J. Announced the Red Scarlet was available for sale today, would you NOT buy it because of no HDRx?

1 Vote here for no further delays on Scarlet, and hopefully no additional price increases on Scarlet...

PS... By the way, isn't it about time for a brief update on Scarlet, or at least a little sample footage?

:patriot:

Nick D,

If you could get HDRx today for another k, would you do so?

So it's mainly processing power/capability that'll need to be increased if we want the Scarlet to support HDRx? Purely theoretically, would that increase FPS/bandwidth too then?

Only New Feature needed is "NOW SHIPPING"

Interesting question Danny, but based on the roughly proposed $5K Fixed or $2750 interchangeable body today I'd have to say no as that would add $2000 to a pair of Scarlet in 3D application (However, I would agree it would truly add more than that in value in post rather quickly)...

the "Key" here being any further delay would cost me more money in waiting during the first year than I could easily make back without it...

So, I guess the Only New Feature needed is "NOW SHIPPING"

David, I'm not sure Scarlet will survive (commercially) another market iteration.

If Scarlet gets delayed and ends up costing another $1K I'll wait for the next RED camera, with at least a 4/3 sensor.

We don't know what Scarlet's schedule is at the moment anyway or if implementing HDR would even cause an added delay. I don't think there would be much to choose between S35 Scarlet and a 4/3 Scarlet cost wise and lenses are limited and problematic for the 4/3 format at this point. Might change in a few years, but for now you would pretty much be limited to 4/3 still lenes or S35/APS-C still and cine lenses. For fast zooms anyway this means significant size and weight issues compared to 2/3".

2/3"/DC16 is its own format and will not go away regardless of what happens with the larger sensor camera market. Lenses for this format will not cover 4/3. It is and will remain practical and popular in its own right, especially since the real market alternatives to Scarlet at this point are all in the $20k and up range. A modest cost 2/3" camera that can perform with the $40k and up big dogs in this format, and way outperform any sub-$10k long GOP video camera regardless of sensor size is a formidable creative tool.
