  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Extra $1000 (more or less) for HDRx on Scarlet?

Hello.

I have been lurking on this forum since the inception of Red, have worked a lot with Red One footage in post production (I am a freelance engineer and a staff graphics programmer) and am eagerly awaiting owning a Scarlet for my own personal art projects.

While the addition of HDR certainly sounds amazing, I personaly would much rather have the option of HDR as a module for the Scarlet. The module itself could arrive and ship months after the initial Scarlet is released, and people who want the module could update should they choose. However, I have to say the already increased Dynamic Range over every other solution out there sounds like enough for almost all shooting environments except the toughest, and I do not think it warrants additional month delays and an additional cost across the board.

To put it mildly, I want my Scarlet yesterday, so anything that delays it for additional features at this point that *cannot* be added as an optional module really hurts.

I expect like others have said, the additional time delay, cost, let alone technical and post production resources needed to properly grade and understand the workflow for most might be more off putting than just leaving the Scarlet as is.

My vote is simply no. If it can be added as an optional Module, then by all means, options are fantastic. Forgive me if I have missed some stated decision, discussions move fast around here.

Thank for considering.

It depends: if HDR will delay Scarlet, absolutely not.

I want Scarlet ASAP.

Thank you.

I can imagine the scarlet line being refreshed after all the known models have come out. 4-5 years of constant production, field use and innovation add up to a smaller, cheaper more powerful product. Will Scarlet have HDRX in 2010? Seems doubtful. Will a refreshed model have it in 5 years time? Probably. I can wait and rent the Epic in the mean time.

please no more delays and price hikes. Just release it. Thanks.

Here's one answer for you...

Thanks Terry, sorry I missed that. Thats a real shame. Considering the polling percentages I suspect I get to wait longer and pay more. Alas. That extra 1K may not hurt the professionals but for the folks who are looking to own and use it for private use only, it does sting.

It's not a simple matter of whichever option has more votes gets to win. In a close tie like this RED would upset and/or lose half of their potential customers (if these polls are somewhat representative of their target consumer) if they were to increase prices/delay shipping.

The specs and design have already improved vastly over the years. The price has gone up as well. We went from 3K for $3k to $4,750.00.

Sure, half the voters will be upset at the lack of HDR for $1k extra. But then again this doesn't make the camera beyond their financial means or delay it. There is simply no other camera on the market in 2010 that can match most of what the Scarlet can do in that price range.

4-5 years? You're worried about a purely speculative delay [ see Terry, I'm learning] now, but you want us to wait 5 years?
We'll have HDR in our power-chairs by then!

Captures of current Reduser posters from a far-future wrap party, taken with Scarlet DC16 HDR...finally:

Notice color of power-chairs and buzz-saw logos in middle pic. Might be cool to see scooters burning rubber at 120 fps.

My speculation: Scarlet DC16 with HDR now will put it ahead of the competition for the next 5-10 years.

What the poll tells RED is that it is up to them to decide to HDR is Scarlet or not. It's a small majority that favors YES, but it's still almost evenly split. Had the poll swayed heavily one way or the other, then RED would have a clear cut answer from their potential
customers.

Agreed. Although maybe either the poll should have had an extra option or RED give an insight into...

How many people would have voted yes if RED stated that it wouldn't affect the release too much. Last I heard (been away shooting) the modes aren't set to come out with the camera so its just a matter of making sure the camera can take it. So if the extra cards don't reqire a massive overhaul, which I don't see why it should although i'm sure its pretty tight inside there, it would likely slightly increase the girth.

I recently shot in an ancient church and i am telling you now I would have killed for HDR. Because I was not allowed to take anything electrical and was not allowed high powered light of any kind I had to deal with what was available. With HDR I would have been able to control the light flooding through the massive windows and still kept the beautiful shadows - even the wood was dark enough to cause a slight irritation. That is a perfect example of why it is such a gift.

My guess is it is not so much the poll results that Red will make use of as it is the discussion. RedUser has always served as a kind of focus group. The only difference here is that the group is essentially public. The benefit is that it is almost free, and the group is larger.

Tim, that is a beautiful example of why some of us are pushing so much for HDR. And it's not a rare scenario, especially in older buildings. Maybe this thread will stay open long enough for it to be informed by forthcoming Epic shots discussed in the Recon/HDR thread.

I must say I voted no, both because of the extra cost and probably as we know red, the extra time it will take to 'upgrade' the system, though it might not be long. Also, I voted no because I thought a thing like this would be possible to upgrade to in the future. However if this extra feature includes a higher frame rate, say 100/120 fps at 5K and 200/250 fps at 2K on the S35 brain, then this would change the situation for me and make my answer into a yes instead. However this whole new modulairty system begs to make this an optional thing, if Red decides to make use of it in the Scarlet models.
