  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EXTRA RAVEN PACKAGE - WHAT SHOULD IT BE?

We better find a package that suits (most of) all or we will prove Jarred that there is no need to propose a new one.

So to start with :

DO WE AGREE WITH A I/O V-LOCK(OR GOLD) MOUNT IN THAT PACKAGE?

Pat

LOL

I think we shhould be able to define shoot-ready for a few common scenarios:

Drone

Feature film/TV-Drama

Shortfilm (low budget) Music videos (Not the ones Christoper is shooting...) and weddings (typical one-man-band scenarios)

VFX work.

If we could set up the needs for these scenarios, I think setting up the packages would... be... not so hard.

(Ramble warning...)
I know that's not part of Raven, but internal ND's was on my wishlist, too :)
And I know it costs "more" and won't be in the current release.

And I know Phil will argue rightfully with compromises of the with optical path, and that I will argue that when I CAN use a mattebox, I will and just not use the ND's... :)

In all I think the concept is largely good.

And I respect RED for not including it.
Still...

Hahahahaha

Keep it flowing

Heh. I personally don't care if we get internal NDs or not. I see the pros and cons.

What I don't get is the recent POV I've seen "This camera has everything I want except for internal NDs, it's not for me!".

I see where for some it might be a deal breaker, but dude. That really shouldn't be anywhere near a deal breaker. Not when you look at what the rest of the camera has to offer. Especially at Raven's price point.

To Patrick's point. V-Lock Base Expander is to me a very smart and damn near shoot-able package.

Since there already is a V-mount package, it feels natural that the new one might be based around XL volt. Module plus two XL Volts as the "power part" of the package.

And I strongly feel the Raven should shoot, charge and offload 'out of the box'.

Looking around at the reaction RAVEN has gotten from the internet I think the biggest gripe those coming from DSLRs/Blackmagic/Sony have is that the packages aren't quite shoot out of the box ready. What's missing?

1.Media. Realistically you'd need a minimum of 2X120GB redmags if not 3. Lets stick to 2 for pricing reasons.
2.Media offload. These people come from a market brimming with standard non propriety media. They need a way to offload the redmags. Give them that. Add in a Red Station.
3.Power. Now, I know this impacts modules however if I had to venture a guess, a lot of these people don't even own V-mount batteries. Either swap out the base io module for a redvolt XL module+ 4 redvolt XLs OR simply add 3 red bricks + dual charger.

So lets say this bundle is basically the RED RAVEN BASE IO package + extra minimag, red station, 3 red bricks and a dual charger. That would normally cost an extra ~$3K. Do the whole kit for $12K and I think it'll help convert quite a few more people who were on the fence.

Now if only RED would make an affordable EF mount companion kit lens and we could essentially get something like the original Scarlet fixed concept on steroids!

I totally agree the Raven is a beast as it is. And I have no complaints of its offering, but as Jarred opened this line of thoughts... I think that seems like a good idea to consider.

Also all packages should consist of a way to access your recordings.

Forgetting about the (almost humorous) mentioning of internal NDs, I think it should be shoot ready.
Nw that isn't a general answer. So that is why I was thinking in the line of defining needs based on a few specific but generally relevant use-cases.

Personally, it would be XLR's, sync ports, ctrl port, SDI's (yup 2x) and if HDMI, it should be 4k.
I could do the luts externally, but two SDI streams are really handy.

Now. I am probably not a standard case as I kinda work in the extremes of thing m(e alone in China/AFrica and VFX heavy shit).

And that's the source of my: Let's think from user-case, idea. But I'll leave it at that.
I have a Dragon.
And I can only envy what people can buy for 6000 dollars these days (remembering my RED1 M days back in 2008 and getting irritating :) )

Yep, I agree for ease of jumping in. A USB 3.0 MINI-MAG reader should be a part of whatever this new package is.

I think everyone's agreed on this. This leaves power and amount of media as the biggest remaining factors for the broadest customer base IMHO. What does everyone think of minimum power/media requirements for a single day's shoot? For Raven users I'd say the BARE minimum would be 2X120GB minimags and 3 bricks. Anyone agree/disagree? I think things like extra I/O functionality are great but lower on the agenda than being able to run the damn thing and shoot all day :)

I would even say that that should be part of any "package".
If you cannot access your data, you don't actually have a camera.

But that is just a personal observation.

Forgetting lenses and accessories: You minimally need:
Recording unit.
Media. (Personally I'd prefer 2x 120GB over 1x 240)
Sound in (on camera or with other mic's)
Monitoring
A way to access your recordings
Power

Next up:
External monitoring
Sync

But maybe I am living in a bubble. :)

I have my deposit down for the Jetpack package. But the more I think about it, the more I want to change to a V-Lock base expander package. The Jetpack is advertised for gimbal work, but I don't see how being tethered to the gimbal is a good thing. The handoff is going to be difficult with the battery belt and that heavy cable looks like it's going to make balancing the gimbal difficult.

This prompts me to inquire whether or not we will forfeit our place in the queue if we request to upgrade or change from one package to another? I pre-ordered just the brain within an hour or two of the site going live, as there was no details on the v-lock module posted, plus there was promise of new modules being announced shortly. Will we be penalized for erring on the side of caution while waiting for more information about these new developments?

I ordered the brain as well. The base I/O package seems amazing but I would like to see what comes out from 3rd party companies the next few months. As well I already have a Red 5" touch which will be great with my Raven, and has swivel which is a must. As Brent said you save a couple hundred dollars with the package, but also I think you will save that couple of hundred dollars back when you purchase a 240g + card, as they are less expensive then 2 120 by $300.

Any idea how long we could realistically power the Raven on a RV XL?

Raven
7" Touch Screen
2x 120gb Mini Mags
Mini Mag Reader
V-Lock
2 Red Bricks
Power Adaptor
Dual Charger
Side Handle
$12K

In keeping with the Red military naming call it the Gunner Package

This is something I'm wondering about as well. On one hand it'd be great to run off rvxls, but then again V-Mounts are so versatile.
Phil was testing this I believe. He said he thought the Weapon might be a bit better. I think usually they get a tad over a hour and a half on Epic Dragon/Scarlet Dragon or MX's.

You get 90 minutes from a single Redvolt XL?
I want to say this is what i've heard/read. Phil could chime in and have a better idea. I'm personally still using 2 Red Bricks i've been using since I got the scarlet that still somehow give me about 2 hours each. And I shoot a lot.

Yeah I only use my redvolts now for quick DSLR style handheld work, otherwise V locks live on the back.
