  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Expectations...

well i m not surprised, marketing strategies and sentence like this one:

I hope everyone here will be paying attention Nov. 3rd. Scarlet is going to blow you away. Recon. Scarlet belongs...

will produce high expectations, so no reason to be surprised jim.

"Why not 28K at 1000fps RAW in a raisin box for $800?"
Yes, why not? I think in roughly 100 years that will be the case if you (Red) make sure that the current state is not enough. Always aim for the next goal and be there first or best. This you seem to manage quite well. As you've shown over the past few years. Let's hear it when Red turn's 100 years.

Back to the now... I'll be here November 3rd and I'm sure it will be more then what I expected.

This part you are simply making up...

Agreed, but it's an assumption based on subtext that came from numerous posts from Jim himself. He intentionally left Epic-S off the roadmap entirely. INTENTIONALLY. And he was intentionally vague about it. Therefore, I don't think it's that much of a stretch to think they could have folded it back into the Scarlet line, especially since Jim made a point of talking about how much things have changed with the Scarlet. Maybe the Epic-S is still in the pipeline and Jim just likes seeing people squirm.

At any rate, it's not a wild ass guess and not the type of discussion Jim was referring to. In fact, the ONLY reason I brought this up was because people keep referring to the Epic-S as if it's a done deal, despite the fact that it's no longer on the roadmap, which has to be at least as irresponsible as me saying it may have morphed back into Scarlet.

If I'm not mistaken, neither one of us has a clue what the current Scarlet chassis and boards consist of. You're acting as if they can't take the Epic-S body and specs and simply change the name. I'm merely offering up a reasonable alternative (which I think is more likely, given Jim's posts) to the equally dubious (IMO) status of the Epic-S nomenclature.

I generally like your posts and I don't wish to get into an argument with you over this. Like I've said elsewhere...

We shall see on November 3.

Whether I'm disappointed or not will depend entirely on the price. I trust RED to make something of excellent quality, but I want to be able to afford it. Selfish, but hey...

DNA... More like conjoined twins. RED has noted this on multiple occasions. Jim has recently started calling this their library, to encompass everything RED I think. But specifically for the camera software part, red has embraced their modularity philosophy to it's very core. If the code for Scarlet and EPIC isn't one project file with two build targets to deal with small differences in hardware I'll eat my hat.

I’m with you there… as a software architect/designer and designer of particular HW that’s how that would make absolute sense. However that may indeed just be reflection of my own thinking… But that is what I would do…

People seem so incredibly focussed on the hardware side of Scarlet even though we've recently seen the not-so-insignificant release of Redcine X Pro. There have been sides of this whole DSMC thing left unexplored so far, things not requiring fundamentally different hardware from the last thing we were told about Scarlet. The way these little monsters can crunch pixels leaves room for lots of other things.

With you 100% on that. This may be less than half of the “we’re just getting started" JIM statements.

I'm with you there. We're missing something that will be bloody obvious when we look back at it on November 4th.

Overall I get this sense of a very parallel announcement that pertains really to an absolutely consolidated RED PLATFORM. I get this feeling of here’s how it is and we are laying it all out. The thing is if you have a really well engineered CORE platform like (what you are saying Pascal) then this IS something you can absolutely build your future on. In the software we developed etc. over of number of years we pulled things down at least twice to re-engineer a truly modular bullet proof platform. Without very solid thinking about a really solid architecture then you cannot reach very far into the future.

It’s like building a house, you can build a modest foundation or you can engineer a monumentally solid and flexible core that you can build onto up and out into a giant skyscraper that can tolerate whatever nature and the environment can throw at it and still survive build and grow.

But then again maybe this is fanciful thinking, but I doubt it somehow…, as these guys again and again seem to almost always DO THE RIGHT THING.

Basically good freaking engineering as it should be.

Cheers,

Eric

I for one am going to keep sucking right up until there is a FF35 camera available in the ballpark of $17k. :D
"Winter 2009". I'm patient.

Im with you on that. I've been waiting for Reds' FF35 for a long time as well. Can't wait to hear more about it and can't wait to own it!

Some people are quoting the last know Scarlet specs as a way to express a configuration they would be thrilled with and, in some cases, even prefer. That's valid.

But, some people insist on quoting last known specs as "what we know" when Jim already stated those specs have changed. The question is to what extent do those specs no longer apply?

We shall see on November 3.

Get Real!

Get Real!

It amazes me that people waste their time speculating about what Jim and RED is going to offer. They really don't need 100 uninformed internet geeks chiming in on what or what not to do or offer or how much to charge. As if any of us have a clue about camera design, features or manufacturing. Jim says it's going to be mind blowing and an amazing game changer so if you are a loyal RED customer then that should be more than enough. Either you have faith or you don't. Either you are for RED or against RED. I also think it very disrespectful to criticize RED or their efforts on a website they themselves own, maintain and pay for. If you don't like waiting for the best camera ever made or backorders then sign-off and get lost. Go be a Canon or Arri user - maybe they will value your engineering and market analysis input better! Like Jim says "Get REAL"!

GO RED!!

Well, I would say I'm the world's foremost expert on what I'm willing to buy and for how much. :p

Well Josh, folks who use the tools on a regular basis often have insights and ideas that the designers and engineers find valuable enough to sift through a whole lot of noise and chatter to obtain.

I do…

That why I’m paying attention.

It IS important…

The biggest win for me is a camera that shoot raw!! And at a price I can affort.
I don't have an extra 20. grand for computer power to process 5k in post.
So everything of 2k and behond I will be very happy.
It is the Red workflow the raw that I really would love to be part of.
Scarlet as a camera to be a Red Starter and working towards a Epic.

Exactly. This is all I'm hoping for. I hope the price is around the 6K that everyone has been throwing around as that is right where I can afford. I want/need part of the RED workflow. Especially when shooting amateur action sports where setting up is not always a luxury. That lus the slow mo and I'm burning a hole right through my credit card.

And my Canon DSLR stuff is going on eBay.

Love reduser.net. I learn a truckload from these threads. Amazing. But there's definitely a fanboy-on-Stevenote-Eve-frenzy-wish-list epidemic going on, and it's not contributing at all. Speculation creates expectation that sometimes falls on the side of utter delusion. Not good.

amazing how much die hard faith and loyalty can be stirred up in seemingly under a month! testament to RED i guess.

The best option would be a large sensor, either 4/3 or s35, bar none. I wish the run and gun crowd with go to a different manufacturer.

Can't we all just get along?:grouphug:

I don't know why everyone is hoping Scarlet has a S35 sensor...

I hope Scarlet has a 2/3" or smaller sensor so we can use lightweight, inexpensive glass. And it doesn't need to be 5K...

Exactly. I was more than ecstatic at the specs the Scarlet originally had from the get go. Most important was the price which meant it was within reach. As features were added, so grew the price, yet still "within reach"

So in the sense that Scarlett won't disappoint, I have no doubts that whatever is announced on Nov 3rd will be super awesome, and will represent a great achievement in terms of VALUE. However, the reality is that some, like myself, may have to accept the fact that what was once "within reach" is now still a distant dream, at least in terms of affordability.

No worries on my part, and I wouldn't be upset one bit. I'd simply have to accept it and work harder to get to a point where I can improve myself, my work, and my financial situation to the point where I can buy what will undoubtedly be a great value.

I believe Jim said it best, that no matter what happens, all of us (the consumer) wins. Looking forward to Nov. 3rd.

A "troll" that will have his credit card ready my fellow REDs! If it's a 1/3, 2/3 or FF Scarlet - I really don't care! It will be the most awesome camera in the world so who cares about meaningless internet opinions in the meantime. Do people really think this a focus group forum?? November 3rd is put up or shut time for all of us - agreed?? Either you 100% believe in Jim and his company RED or not. Period.
