  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Expectations...

Cracks me up that the "cool it with the speculation" thread is full of speculation

I thought this was pretty funny.

Jim is the undisputed genius at many things and of course marketing is a very strong suit of his; no question there. It’s always an education here.

I think it’s more a case of squashing things down a bit just so when the news breaks and everything is explained then it will have the desired impact. I.e. as he says he doesn’t want the wind taken out of his sails. If you start from a lower point then the news (when it’s delivered) will definitely have the shock awe and wow that they seek and no doubt WILL achieve.

The fact that Jim is SO bursting to share tells me that maybe HE is giving something that we will all go totally “Bananas” over above and beyond a new line of cameras. This whole customer focus aspect. It seems that they (obviously) have grand plans and “we” (maybe) are part of that somehow, but don’t right now actually have the faintest idea how? (above and beyond just buying cameras…).

Never the less in some weird way this does inspire confidence in RED.

I know it’s all a bit blah blah..(just sit and wait…)

Cheers,

Eric

Exactly - prepare to get blown away - doubters get lost!! I'm ALL IN!

Love reduser.net. I learn a truckload from these threads. Amazing. But there's definitely a fanboy-on-Stevenote-Eve-frenzy-wish-list epidemic going on, and it's not contributing at all. Speculation creates expectation that sometimes falls on the side of utter delusion. Not good.

And you just figured this out? That is the reason why many many really good professionals of the industry stay away from this forum. It is really sad.

Last night I met Jarred Land in a bar, slipped him a few triple vodka and redbulls, sang a few songs, and when he passed out, took a peak in his back pack. I gotta tell you the Scarlet is nothing like what any of us expected.

1080i
h.264
the camera itself is the recording medium
disposable (comes in a box of 80)
pin hole lens

I tried to ask him the price point and he mumbled something along the lines of "the squirrels ate my bananas man, the squirrels ate my bananas."

I saw some guys from Gizmodo hanging around so swallowed it before they got too close.

Anyone want to buy a slightly soiled Scarlet before November 3rd, PM me now.

I'll be posting some great endoscopic footage soon (the "birthing" section's phenomenal!!!).

Just what this thread needs. I chuckled.

Why not just wait until we announce before guessing?

May be the announcement post was a little too bold! And for the biggest announcement RED ever made one is led to think big!
Come on... thing had changed so many times even after the announcement of the announcement that maybe the dream could become reality!

Some wacky posts here. Oy!

Count me in as one who would be ecstatic if they just released something close to what we thought they would in the recent past. The camera Ted's been holding and talking about for a few months still looks like a winner to me. I'm happy with 3k. I'm happy with 2/3". I'll be happy with fixed. Or interchangeable. If it turns out to be more than that, great. This all looks great to me no matter how you slice it up. And if they can get close to $6k for something like this, I'll be very pleased.

I don't know why everyone is hoping Scarlet has a S35 sensor...
I hope Scarlet has a 2/3" or smaller sensor so we can use lightweight, inexpensive glass. And it doesn't need to be 5K...

People that hope for S35 likes it because of the DOF possibilities it gives! 2/3 or smaller sensors are ment for economical consumer products.

Nothing but the greatest respect intended. One of the most wonderful aspects of this forum is the humanity, dignity, integrity, openness, humor, passion, comradeship and command the Red Team display in their interaction.with forum members.

Also the rough and tumble. Their interaction is honest, straightforward and respectfully unedited and uninhibited. We are all brothers and sisters in arms.

Filmmakers in awe and wonder at the possibilities and freedoms being created here and elsewhere by Red's courageous activities.

I have nothing but respect, admiration and affection for the characters on these pages and the human beings behind them.

As creators, visionaries, leaders and businessmen, I take nothing but close notice and wisdom.

Sorry if I rumpled feathers.

And my apologies for assuming liberties.

I mean nothing but respect and fondness.

Still don't know what that bananas thing meant though.

When all the doubters and complainers get their own Wiki page listing their accomplishments then they can rant all they want:

2/3 economical consumer product? not sure we have to rehash the long list of films that found 2/3 commercially viable for big budgets.

Lots of us out here who have shot miles of tape for broadcast, commercial production, etc. on 2/3" that can't wait to get our hands on a 3k cam that shoots RAW with HDRx, overcranking to 120fps, etc. in a relatively portable unit.

Exactly. And don't forget the many TV series, even with very shallow DoF.

I think that people should't be insulting each other over this. There are obviously different perspectives and expectations amongst redusers and scarlet users, but, bottom line, what people want is to be able to purchase the Scarlet. Most of the indie world places their faith in the Scarlet being their Holy Grail, like the Red One was the Holy Grail for the medium and high end.

Everyone is excited and has their own expectations towards that camera. I think the only unrealistic expectations end up to be on the price- specially when compared to DSLR's.

I'm, sincerely, not bothered at all with speculation. Its a reflection of what people dream this camera to be. These dreams come from their type of work, what they want to achieve with this camera.

The 2/3rds fixed crowd want a camera for a vast array of use: for event coverage, for documentary work, for 3D, and occasionally for conventional non 3D fiction film. That's not their main concern.

The 2/3rds interchangeable crowd are looking for a 16mm replacement, again, for documentaries, 3D or event coverage, and probably broadcast work.

The S35 crowd are the indie filmmakers, those that inundate vimeo with fiction work done with their DSLR's, AF100, FS100, and, to a lesser extent, F3's. These are film school students, small companies, independent artists, etc. This crowd varies greatly in budget.

The S35 crowd is also the current crowd inundating short film festivals around the world. These are the future "big guns" of the industry, the new generation of feature film directors. They will have a say on the future standard of digital cinema.

This is my perspective, anyway. Every single one of these configurations is an interesting and ground breaking product for digital cinema, provided Red keeps their revolutionary codec, workflow and form factor. When I "divide" these different groups, I do it in a simplistic matter, obviously. All of them can be used in the situations stated above. But there are bound to be different preferences dependent of which crowd wants that camera.

November 3rd will be a very exciting day to watch. I'll be here and "trigger happy" on my Red Store account. I hope everyone takes these days as an exciting build up and don't throw punches at each other, its not worth it. whatever comes out will be better than the competition. Red has always delivered.

Hey Josh, I'm neither a doubter, complainer or ranter! I'm a loyalist, an advocate, an evangelist for the Red revolution!

If my respectful and affectionate humor doesn't translate, I'll remove my post.

Peace and respect.

Sorry if I came off a bit heavy handed but it seems that RED customers sometimes just don't appreciate the extreme hard work and personal sacrifices that Jim and Jarred have put in to providing us with amazing technology. Without RED so many very important films would have never been made or careers launched. Sure there have been some bumps along the way but I think that RED will deliver on all the promises they have made - if not by Nov 3rd then very soon after. It seems that all the major DP's and Feature Directors are finally getting on board and soon perhaps the theater and TV screen manufacturers will see Jim's vision of 4K+. I'll bet by this time next year most of the TV shows will be shot on RED - Arri is no match! This is no time for infighting since the war is with Canon, Arri and others that seek to steal what the Team at RED have built over the years. Let's all show our vote of confidence by crashing the RED Store server on Nov 3rd with orders and putting production into major backorder mode for the following year and maybe into 2013!!! ; )

I don't get it. I can get a red box of 1000 raisins at the store on 28th street for less then 10 bucks, so why not a RED with 1000 FPS at 28K? Maybe because they are cooked and not raw?

"Why not 28K at 1000fps RAW in a raisin box for $800?"

I agree with you Sergio, there are a lot of different crowds that are excited for the Scarlet but the ones who believe that they are going to get a DSLR type of a camera in a RED Epic mini pkg for the same price of the DSLR are going to be very disappointed I think. Lets face it the Scarlet is not anywhere close to a DSLR.

I really look forward to the Scarlet and the announcement, and if you are one who believes it should have a moon rock 5K sensor and come with all the fixings for $19.99 free shipping, your going to be very upset when you see what Red has done and for what Im sure will be a very reasonable price compared to the others.

Bring on the 3rd.....Ill be waiting with wallet open.

S16 ish, raw, hdrx, pl mount, that's all I'm wishing for as I know it's gonna be amazing resolution wise.
Unleash them Jim !
