  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Expectations...

After 3 years of "announcements of announcements", "announcements" and then some more "announcements" just released the information for God's sake. There is no need to tease anymore, this whole thing is passed that stage a long time ago. Let us know what is available and then we can make a decision if we want it or not. Or if we can afford it or not. All the crazy speculation is just insane. The "competition" must be laughing their heads off because they know that because of it many people will be disappointed at the end of the road with what will finally be available. If the little stuff shot so far with a 2/3 Scarlet is any indication I will be more than happy to start my RED introduction with one of those.

Disappointment? There will be some...unless you give it away.

Disappointment? There will be some...unless you give it away.

If anyone is disappointed in the Scarlet Nov. 3rd announcement... they suck. And we won't lose one minute of sleep. The announcement is just too good.

Jim

Ok, please don't be disappointed Jim when there are folks that are going to be wanting everything for nothing and when it's priced out of their range they will complain about it. You should know that you are definitely NOT going to please everyone no matter what you do.

Whatever price point that you decide upon, Scarlet will be worth it. It will be far beyond any other camera out there. If people don't like it, please don't whine about it and saying I thought it was going to be this and it wasn't, just go buy something else that you can afford, but I'd bet nothing else out there will be close.

Standing by for my EPIC X.

Best,
Frazier Nivens, Ocean Imaging

"the camera you want is at the end of this year." "if we change is only for the better". These comments were made by Jim in an Epic-s thread. Who wanted an Epic S wanted at least 4K S35. I expect Red to deliver that on November 3rd. I'm looking at the Epic right now as my next purchase, because its red's flagship and will improve massively over time, but that camera, the s35 Scarlet, is definitely the one most around here are crying for. I expect red one mx performance at 15k brain + cf/ssd module. Full package 21k.

I love how people are still making crazy statements about what they expect in the very thread where Jim has tried to bring them down to earth, fascinating.

If you've waited this long you can wait another twelve days! makes perfect sense to me to have a whole bunch of people online checking out two major announcements on one day, I can only loose so much time to the addictive beast that is these forums.

Go to the competition's Web Site, check out their Open Forum, then come back here with a full report.

What the fuck do these folks think exactly. That Jim goes into RED studios and will blow pixie dust on something and that is what will be realeased in 12 days.

Anythiing that will be released and available in 12 days would have been locked down A LONG TIME ago. This is how product development works.

You've really hit a great point here Stephen.

Measure us against our competitors... not your fantasies.

Nothing competes with EPIC. Nothing will compete with Scarlet... except your wildest dreams.

Jim

Nothing competes with EPIC because its 1) the best technologically, and 2) the cheapest by a landslide.

In order for Scarlet to have that same effect, it has to stack up in a similar manner. I have no doubt it will be the best from a technical standpoint, but my fear is that the price will be considerably higher than its competition. The last thing I would want to see is a full-frame Canon 5D Mark iii come out with 2-4k at 3500 dollars and the Scarlet be announced with a 2/3" sensor at over 10k.

I'm rooting for you guys big time Jim. I love you guys as a company, and there's nothing that would please me more than to finally be able to be one of your customers after 4 years of following. I just hope you guys allow me to.

This statement could apply to Epic-X orders opening up to the broader public; it could apply to the long-anticipated Epic-S being released. To my knowledge, the only specific promises for November 3rd are about Scarlet. Since the Scarlet with the s35 sensor was moved to the Epic line, no mention has ever been made by RED about Scarlet being anything but a 2/3 inch sensor. And while Jim has been saying that the future is 4K for a very long time, the Scarlet has proceeded down the 3K path even as he spoke those words. We have seen prototypes and we have seen footage. I think people who are predicting s35 or 4/3rds sensors and 4K are indulging in wishful thinking and, as Jim has pointed out, setting themselves up for disappointment. Many people see bigger as necessarily better in the sensor department (a mistake, IMO) and are engaging in speculation based on the believe that EVERYONE, especially Jim/RED, shares this opinion. Perhaps or perhaps not. But I'd take it to heart when Jim scoffs at the speculation and warns people that they are raising false expectations. What exactly is he referring to, who knows?

The last known Scarlet "facts" are 2/3" sensor, Fixed and Interchangeable. 3K, HDRx - that's about as far as it goes.

You don't think REDCode RAW is better than line-skipping, highly compressed? You don't place any value on 120 fps? Is sensor size the only crier on which to evaluate quality?

So what you are saying is that in terms of “code” that Scarlet (assuming its even still called Scarlet) will have the DNA of EPIC?

DNA... More like conjoined twins. RED has noted this on multiple occasions. Jim has recently started calling this their library, to encompass everything RED I think. But specifically for the camera software part, red has embraced their modularity philosophy to it's very core. If the code for Scarlet and EPIC isn't one project file with two build targets to deal with small differences in hardware I'll eat my hat. People seem so incredibly focussed on the hardware side of Scarlet even though we've recently seen the not-so-insignificant release of Redcine X Pro. There have been sides of this whole DSMC thing left unexplored so far, things not requiring fundamentally different hardware from the last thing we were told about Scarlet. The way these little monsters can crunch pixels leaves room for lots of other things.

I sense something new beyond the obvious…That's why it's burning a "hole" through Jim's head.

Come on guys THINK! Think hard...On the other hand, you can’t make serious plans around a guessing game can you… really (blind faith or otherwise)...
I'm with you there. We're missing something that will be bloody obvious when we look back at it on November 4th.

I have read a lot of the posts regarding Scarlet. There are so many unrealistic expectations that it takes the wind out of our sails.

Some people apparently have no idea what realistic is.

"Why not 28K at 1000fps RAW in a raisin box for $800?"

We are so happy to have a complete competitive advantage. We consider our customers as one of us. What we have always done is beat the competition in price/performance. But the misguided expectations for Scarlet are killing me.

You should expect a lot from us. But within reason. Really.

Measure us against our competitors... not your fantasies.

Get real. Get real before November 3rd. Or you will be unnecessarily disappointed. Which is totally unnecessary.

Jim

Finally someone said it and I m glad it was Jim. This camera will more than likely be the last camera I buy. My hopes are simple. I hope it will be the best damn camera for the money on the market. I hope I can afford to buy it. I hope it will be THE camera that all the young directors and doc producers want on their shoots. I hope that in four years when I finally retire and hang up my vest that it will still be a viable tool and someone will buy it and continue to use it to the max. I don't expect to be disappointed and I am so so so tired of all the technobabble and nonsense posts. Shit I want Scarlet to arrive so I can read about REAL shooting experiences and see REAL footage and share experiences with the camera. Thats what I hope for...

Jim

That is the best post I have ever read from the head of any company! 55555555

My thought is simple, two years ago I heard about a camera I fell in love with and would suite the purpose I had in mind for it, at a price I could afford. Come November 3rd that SAME camera will be ready to ship.

The only "spec" change I am waiting to hear about is the price. Then I was flush with cash, now things have changed...that's life, but that's also my problem, not Scarlets, or Reds.

Scarlet was an amazing camera then, it will STILL be an amazing camera Nov 3rd. if Jim and his team have added anything to the camera, thats a bonus pure and simple. I am not waiting for a cheap ass unrealistic version of the Epic, I am waiting for my Scarlet.

Terry, when Jim laid out the roadmap, he named the Epic-M and Epic-X specifically but left out mention of the Epic-S. Some people got worried and pressed him for clarification.

His reply was an indication that those people were not being neglected. He could've easily given an update on the Epic-S status. Instead, he was cryptic but reassuring. That's why I'm fairly confident an S35 (or similar) sized sensor is forthcoming. If not, that means Jim intentionally misled some people. I don't think that's the case.

I believe it will be in the Scarlet family, however that works out, along with other offerings. I might be wrong.

In this case, it's what Jim did and didn't say on which I base this assertion. My interpretation could be wrong, but at least it's an interpretation of the facts more than it's speculation.

Got it Jim. All of the "I think" "I hope" "I'm sure" "I heard" "I read" in this particular case will eventually lead to a lot of unnecessary conclusion and high probably false. That's why i totally support RED when you said no more pre announce on products that is not yet going to be released in the future. I think it generates enough interest for you to guess the market reaction i supposed but i think it's doing more damage if you continue to do so.

I have been into that situation before....it creates the opposite effects when the product is actually launch.

Oh... Please be Disapointed and Jump Ship. Please!

We will need all of our Scarlets for those of us who have been preparing a place for them for the past 3 years.

Please keep making your crazy predictions about Scarlet and in every area of your life so you can forever be disappointed in every area of your life and most importantly about the Scarlet and all of Red products, so you never ever actually buy one and therefore there will be more available for all of us who are building our creative platforms based on it.

Thank You and Have a Blessed Nov. 3rd!
I will!

I believe Scarlet will be 3 things on November 3rd:

1) The best 2/3" camera ever made.
2) $6k for a complete kit.
3) Ready to ship in mass quantities.

Any other surprises will be unrelated to Scarlet.
