  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything you wanted to know about the EPIC Canon Mount

-All lens data available from the lens will be stored in the R3D metadata. There is on screen displays for iris stop, focal length ( including zooms ) and the current focus distance in inches or mm.

Great news Jarred! The big question to follow-up on this: Will we be able to access this data from the R3D files outside of the camera?

Canon typically makes more selling glass than they do selling cameras. It is a higher margin and more profitable product for them than their cameras. In fact, they sell their cameras with very slim margins, knowing that their real market is the glass. Canon will sell a boatload of lenses. RED is creating a whole new market for their glass. They'll be thrilled. Not killed.

of course, its on the list :)

Canon must be shitting in their pants.. You guys should really give Scarlet the ability to use this mount somehow! You'd KILL CANON!

Believe it or not, we don't want Canon to die.. Jim and I both have spent half our lifetimes using their gear and they deserve a tremendous amount of respect... specially for their glass.

We wouldn't be making a Canon mounts if we didn't want to keep using what they have made.. and will make :)

heh heh heh...

Sometimes, I hate you guys ;)

I'm pretty excited.

I've resigned myself to getting a "general retail" Epic X.

I don't plan on renting it much if at all, so having an X vs. an M doesn't matter much since they all have Titanium PL mounts. And this mount is an absolute stunner. Very excited.

So, like everyone else I'm waiting on every word, and looking forward to the news.

This kind of development really moves Epic into such a vast array of possibilities, for me at least. Big time cinema will always have the luxury of PL glass but day to day, on not-so-hot budgets, the ability to use Canon lenses can make a huge difference. Thanks Jarred for constantly surprising us and exceeding expectations. If it's exciting out here I can only imagine what it must be like behind closed doors at Redquarters.

Think EPIC.

EPIC you say? Hmmm ....

The RedMote Pro will:

Autostabilize handheld shots
allow metadata tagging
have a full set of scopes, selectable on screen, or laser projected
include a 3D "glasses free" screen for 3D rigs
include a slide out full-size qwerty keyboard (Time Lord technology)
Include a GPS for tagging and ... 3D maps with satellite images!
Project cue cards
generate pre-vis storyboards based on the director's brainstorming on set

And one more thing ... stay tuned for more info!

The most recent Nikons have a menu option to manually enter the lens focal length / minimum aperture for non-CPU lenses.

I love having my lens listed in the metadata so I hope Red implements such a feature.

There is a little confusion ...

The Zeiss ZF lenses are Nikon F mount and fully manual. There are Zeiss ZF.2 lenses which are also Nikon F mount, and they have electronic communication with the body, to allow features like focus assist and metadata transmission, but remain fully manual.

The Zeiss ZE lenses are Canon mount and use the Canon style electronic iris control. They are fully manual focus but otherwise operate on a Canon body like a typical Canon EOS mount

I've only use ZF lenses, and I think ZE lenses are the same but for canon mount.
Vert interressing post. Thank you.

Know it was asked before, but didn't see an answer about the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. Alot of people are including this lens in their Canon set as I will too. Could we ask nicely for this one to get calibrated soon? Thank you.

Great to hear Jarred. I have tons of Canon glass that screams to be used on the new Epic. I'm also looking forward to the new RED lenses.
Great times.

Tim

Think EPIC.

I'd love to see frame ramping on the fly with the REDMOTE PRO knob. Can anyone say "Man On Fire"! Would be awesome to do that with the EPIC!
