  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything you wanted to know about the EPIC Canon Mount

there is a sigma 8-16mm rectilinear.

8mm f4.5 ultrawide on an epic would be ... epic

I'd like to add a specific request for a fairly crappy lens, the Canon 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 EF-S (APS-C)

This is a common kit lens for the Canon 7D and similar cameras, so there are a LOT of them out there.

I find that it makes for a great finder lens on the 7D, so I often keep it with me. I can always jack up the ISO as high as I need to get exposure for use as a finder.

I expect this lens would vignette on Epic at the wide end, but it would be nice to be able to use it, with some accuracy, especially when scouting.

I can say, that despite its flaws that lens is way more useful than a $500 kit lens should be. I've even shot parts of projects with it in a pinch when I needed a particular focal length not covered by my lens kit.

I'd also love to hear more about what we can expect from "unsupported" lenses.

I'd like to add my voice to the throng asking for more information on the RedMote Pro and its estimated delivery. This is fairly important to me ... I think I will want to buy only RedMote Pro's for use with my Epics. For my use I see no point to owning both the RedMote and the RedMote Pro.

i like the 28-135 a lot better. obviously they are both very cheap lenses, but they'll do ye pretty good.

The mount looks awesome. I do wish there was a cheaper option still. $2,000 is more than a 7D and close to the 5D mark II. I understand that Epic's Canon mount is a machined, super high quality product for a super awesome camera. With the wireless follow focus it's extra insane. I'll also admit I'm on the poor side of Red's customers working for a non-profit and paying for most of my own films. So there is no way I could afford an EPIC without Red's generous trade in program. Putting things into perspective it is super cool that RED has made such a full featured mount for a competitors lenses. I understand how awesome all this is, but I do love inexpensive options.

I agree that the 28-135 is a better lens.

I just like having the zoom range, like I said for use as a finder.

I wish there was an L series 18-200 f/4 lens, I'd carry that everywhere!

Aw man, you guys are messing with my head! So with all this Canon mount talk, I go over to the red.com/store and WTF - mount! I can buy a mount! Holy s**tf**k, the canon mount is online already?! I rush to get my credit card, click away, payment accepted, thank you for your order.

Minutes later. I get the confirmation email. Cool! Uhm, wait... I didn't order another Ti PL mount, I already have that on my EPIC-M... Uh.... What?!

.. aw man!

For those of you thinking this is an expensive mount - don't forget it has electronics in it as well to allow the EOS system to talk to the camera via pins etc.

Hope there are enough of these around when our cameras ship to get them shipped at the same time!

Ditto on batteries and chargers (would LOVE info on the Quad but that's for a separate thread).

Cheers,

Paul :)

28-135 and 18-135 would be two very nice EF-S lenses profiled, especially when the Epic-S and the scarlets start to appear - so many 7Ds, 550Ds and 60Ds out there...it's hard to swing a stick and not find one of those two in certain crowds :)

Someone know if the Zeiss ZE lenses (canon mount) will also work with the mount for iris and focus confirmation?

Thanks!
The Zeiss ZE lenses are manual. They can be use with canon mount(I guess), but they don't have motor and btw the electronical iris and focus don't work with them.

Edit: this lenses can send info, but I don't now if that work with the Epic.

Canon must be shitting in their pants.. You guys should really give Scarlet the ability to use this mount somehow! You'd KILL CANON!

Canon should be jumping for joy, they are gonna sell a ton of glass!

Canon typically makes more selling glass than they do selling cameras. It is a higher margin and more profitable product for them than their cameras. In fact, they sell their cameras with very slim margins, knowing that their real market is the glass. Canon will sell a boatload of lenses. RED is creating a whole new market for their glass. They'll be thrilled. Not killed.

There is a little confusion ...

The Zeiss ZF lenses are Nikon F mount and fully manual. There are Zeiss ZF.2 lenses which are also Nikon F mount, and they have electronic communication with the body, to allow features like focus assist and metadata transmission, but remain fully manual.

The Zeiss ZE lenses are Canon mount and use the Canon style electronic iris control. They are fully manual focus but otherwise operate on a Canon body like a typical Canon EOS mount lens.

The Zeiss CP.2 lenses have full electronic communication with the EOS bodies for metadata and enable focus confirmation.

None of the Zeiss lenses are stabilized.

I've only used the Zeiss ZE as demo units, I usually hire Zeiss ZFs that have been cinevised, like the Duclos set.

So, I also don't know if or how they will work with Epic.

PS "Focus confirmation?"

That's when you focus manually and the camera body can detect which AF points are in focus. The body indicates this by "turning on" the AF point(s) which are in focus in the viewfinder. If nothing was in focus, then some things fall into focus, the camera will blink RED as well as turn on the AF points that are now in focus.

The camera will not focus for you in this mode.

IIRC you can't use focus confirmation in the video mode of the Canon DSLRs. Again I have no idea how that would work with Epic.
