  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything you wanted to know about the EPIC Canon Mount

Off topic but how was operating w/o the EVF?

It's interesting and has it's pros and cons.

In broad daylight I'm using a Hoodman sunshade which works nicely, but the extreme contrast of values between daylight and the screen is tricky. An EVF would be very useful in that situation. The 5.0" LCD Touch really shines when you enable focus assist. I've been practicing for several days now and have become "friendly" with that feature and pulling even at very wide apertures is very possible on the touch screen. Did some work last night at f/1.2 and that's tricky to do on any screen.

What I like: The speed and flexibility of having that be my primary screen. Big enough for a monitor, small enough to be almost EVF like. No issue at all on the israeli/noga arm when touching the controls.

What I need to change: A longer LCD to Body cable. I like positioning the camera just a bit further back on my shoulder rig and I know I'll need more cable to get the 5.0" LCD Touch to where I'd like to operate from. Just a bit further out and a bit lower and it's good to go. When I see others staring at the heavens when they operate on shoulder it drives me nuts and I personally can't stand that at all.

I have a SmallHD DP1 that I haven't even plugged into the camera yet that I'm going to experiment with as well in a similar setup. I'm going to have a battery adapter made if that works out so I can use more standard lithium ion units or just run a D-Tap perhaps.

Any updates guys? Someone lucky got the allocation e-mail recently?

What is the status of these Canon mounts? I Ordered so long ago, and now see them going out on Scarlet. How frustrating.

I think Scarlets are only getting the Al Canon mount. If you ordered a while ago then you must still be waiting for a Ti Canon mount. I ordered mine on Sept 11 and got it last week. Was I happy about that wait...not at all. But the mount is really awesome. Just wish RED would come out with another update to add in Canon TC 1.4x and 2x.

Andrew are you saying that the 2x TC is not supported? If so how did Vincent do this http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2011/08/05/one-degree-a-canon-600mm-w-2x-extender-on-the-red-epic/? I'm really hoping it is as I will be using my epic for wildlife a great deal and have a 2X myself.

Anybody else get any allocations recently?

Hi Jarred,

has anyone from RED tested the new Canon EF 400/2.8L IS II USM? Just noticed on your list that AF and Image Stabilization is only functional on the old version.

I'm not sure how Vincent did it. But as far as I've heard from Tom Lowe is that the 2x TC isn't supported as of yet. Now I don't know exactly what that means and I might have to do some tests with my 2x TC III and my 70-200mm. Maybe it just means it has no iris support. If that's the case I guess you could always set your iris without the 2x on and then put it on when your ready.

The beta version of the Canon mount that Vincent had might have had some different support for it. But it would be weird that the would be there in the beta and not now.

Should turn off automatically after a while.

Goods and other things comes to those who wait...

Got this and our RED focus today.

Question, how do you turn of red focus? turned on the light right when it was unpacked, do not seem to want to turn off....

heh heh awesome, welcome to the club :)

RED FOCUS off automatically after 2 minutes. You will get just under 60 hours of continuous use with a fresh set of batteries.

Any chance of a Canon mount flavor of the RED Focus coming soon? Or can I use an PL/EF adapter to make that happen?

So I just did a little test of my Canon 2x TC and the 70-200mm and they work fine together. Iris works and I'll see how the IS handles tomorrow. I'm running the latest beta build on Epic.

Extender support is not really integrated yet.. you just got lucky. Some lenses require minimal effort to pass data through to function, Right now with the 70-200, the 200 2.8 and the 200 2.0 will work with AF, Focal Length and IS. . All other longer lenses will only partially work till the code is fully implemented. sometimes if you put the IS on on the lenses that are not supported yet AF will stop functioning yet.

Proper support will happen in next couple builds.

Man, I am so enjoying the Canon mount. I've been using the Canon 800mm f5.6 quite regularly as of late, and getting some of the most amazing footage ever...

Great to hear the 70-200 II and the extender are working well. This is my regular long telephoto Grand Prix setup. Still pondering on purchasing either the 300 2.8 or the 400 for low light shooting, but just the compatibility with the 70-200 made my day- Now, just need the camera! :)

Sounds perfect, my Extender III will arrive today. Nice telephoto combo with the 70-200 II 2.8.
Jarred, any words on the new 300 or 400 2.8 II? The photos I‘ve seen so far on the web look amazing. I think there‘s is huge market for RED in sports, wildlife and nature. 5K@120fps on 400mm 2.8, 500mm 4.0, 600mm 4.0 or 800 mm 5.6 opens new opportunities.

Apologies if this has already been asked, but will the Aluminum Canon mount be made available for sale as a seperate component? And if so, any word on when and for how much?

DD.
