Jesus guys.. really?? 70 pages arguing about whether or not a price reduction is good for the business??

Hey man.. if X bought an Epic M/X camera in the past year, i'm sure X was more than happy with the deal X was getting at the time and it's really up to X to transform those 18,000 parts in more money in the bank..

Red is challenging all previously accepted believes regarding Camera making business. "Is your camera 2 years old and over 10.000hrs used? How about you send us your camera, will accept it for it's "new" price and then trade it for a new one with tons of new possibilities.. Better yet, we'll send you monthly firmware upgrades to constantly improve your camera and one year from now, you will be able to send us your now "old" camera and get a sensor upgrade that literally transform your baby in a blonde fire spiting bombshell"

If after all that jazz, you are still complaining about this company, then please do yourself a favor and go buy a 100k U$S F35/65 or Alexa Studio and try to get in touch with Sony's/ARRI CEO's to complain about new pricing and trade promotions..

I for one, prefer to stand in the battle line with those that are making Digital Cinema a reality for markets like mine, Paraguay, which never even dreamed about the possibility of working with the same tools guys like Sodenbergh, Peter Jackson, David Fincher, James Cameron and others are fooling around..

Much participated... this thread is a success. It looks like that for first time in the last year, the old enthusiasm is back. Jim in good shape with his announcements :D

Actually, in the Recon threads' list, it is now placed in the 6th page on views rank and 2nd page on replies rank.

Numbers prove it has been very participated. The argument that people have been silent falls down.

Am I being stupid here…

If Red drops the price point on the EPIC does this not mean that they will do greater volume?

I.e. is it not the case perhaps that they have greater capacity and efficiency?

In other words is it not possible that they actually make more money in the long run as they create a larger market by dropping the price. Yes the Unit price goes (somewhat) down but they sell twice as many cameras?

???

There are so many posts in this thread, if you hung wire on them they would make a fence that stretches from New Jersey to L.A.

this time am not getting my hopes too high (sold my bike for scarlet which she never came to me :D )... bcz last time 3k for 3k turn out really bad for me ... I hope its will be amazing offer to blow people minds ... But right now BMCC looks better for my needs with standard SDD instead of redmags.

Rob - how about thinking on it this way...

- I think we can agree that ANY camera will have a certain "shelf life;" Epic is no exception
- You bought your Epic some time ago and have been depreciating it and amortizing the cost over that time
- Next week a new buyer is going to pay less for their Epic (assuming it is the exact same spec). BUT they have even less time to amortize it before it is "obsolete"
- SO, they have to charge a higher rent - probably roughly equal what you have been charging (assuming you are "at market") because their remaining "shelf life" going forward is the same as yours and they didn't get a "head start" in the rental market like you did. In other words, although thy "invested" less, they have to pay their investment off in an even shorter period than you. If they charge less because their purchase price was less, they are the ones making the poor business decision. Not saying it won't happen but, that's the way of the imperfect market.

No Eric.. you are not being stupid.. it's just that there is a bunch of guys here that are not really confortable with a company that communicates price reduction in a such a transparent fashion..

Time to close this thread.

Actually, despite this thread going around in circles, I think it is important and the discussion/debate/disagreement is not only healthy but needed (if nothing than to vent any frustration or curve opinions). For the most part, we are keeping it civil and emotions are not overly laying a smackdown of insults. What we should hear is others that agree with Rob and Milan to speak up. Anyone that hasn't giving their opinion (pro or against the notion that this would hurt rental business) should do so. Let's hear from everyone that's been just reading (which by the way is pretty fun).

Keep it constructive, and do try to listen and understand all points of view is the true nature of learning...my view.

Well...now that everyone is talking crazy....how about dropping the price of the RED ONE too! :)

Avoid New Jersey. I hear there's a FrankenStorm hitting New York right now. I can even feel it here in Canada...ha, ha.

To further your point Eric, putting a larger volume of high end 4/5k cameras out there means more content, good and bad, can be projected in 4k. This, along with other manufacturers producing 4k cameras means the transition to 4k standard happens quicker.

Had to go to Jersey, not enough posts to go to NY... yet. '-)

(never mind the storm... most of the posts in this thread are all wet already)

We're not haters, we're people with real $$ in the game with valid concerns, who have real respect for Red. Thinking for yourself and having concerns does not make you a hater.

I feel the best creatives are both adaptable, AND positive. And in this world, whether you're a "creative," or not, you better embrace creative thinking. :)

With a positive attitude, and teamwork, there is literally nothing that cannot be accomplished. I am confident there a multitude of ways you may be able to profit/gain from whatever happens, Rob -- irrespective of the price reduction. It's just a matter of being open to the possibilities. Don't stress so much, dude. We all hear your frustrations, but there may be a better way to go about venting your concerns -- after all, there are pages of comments and some of the posts are even offering you solutions. I think we're all pretty invested with real $$, in one way or another, or we wouldn't be here.

And like I mentioned, this may all be entirely moot when the discount is quantified.

My comment about haters wasn't directed at you, btw. It's just more of a truism.

And it is the top1* of 2012 as far as Recon subforum replies concerns (4th* ever so far in 2012 for views), so...

nobody can say it is not participated 'cause the old reduser enthusiasm is back home !

A price reduction is simply what the market was asking for ; )

...and the numbers prove it.

Jim, Jarred... hats off gentlemen :-)

* and now I am not referring the Recon threads list's pages...

And it is the top1* of 2012 as far as Recon subforum replies

And that comes out to about 10 posts/hour. Makes it kind of a chore to intelligently reply to the whole of the thread. Either that contributed to some of the poor logic in this thread, or some people just don't have a life. Probably both...

I think the only thing left is to wait till we have the numbers. :-) Either that or head over to the price prediction thread and risk descending further in to peer speculation. I think I have some ranged pretty nailed down though.

Well here is what we know for sure:...

Read the post for my full logic.

Please -- keep me out of this.

-- peer

lol, that's just to good...

Just to let you know I think pure speculation isn't much good either.

I like how your post is purely a play on words though. I am going to blame the grey on grey colors of the text editor and preview for my not catching the spelling mistake though. That and I was tired of reading after 72 pages and 714 posts.

...We now live in the world of exponential.

So says Ray Kurzweil too!

Looking forward to the changes and advancements each and every time. Things only get better with progress.
