  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ET Weapon Side Handle Feedback

On the energy consumption side of mobile computing a year on year 5% reduction sounds very reasonable.

For REDs ASIC's I would speculate there are going to be significant jumps every where power halves going from 28nm to 14nm ... and then halves again when 7nm make it out the door (2019?).

For battery techs - It's a two horse race for lithium ion replacement for cheaper safer versions. The higher energy density ones (ie that weigh less) there is still more research to understand degradation and Max cycles.

My preference would be for a 1.5 kg utility (power) belt that spreads the weight around your hips - and for wireless energy transfer between your hands and a small puffer battery in the RED designed handle that can power the camera for 10 minutes on its own (eg while you plug in another power module into your utility belt.

I estimate that would give 200 Watt hours of power - and with a camera that even the fairer sex could man-handle.

Darren,

I quoted the figure from a Battery Technology scientist being interviewed a few weeks ago on Radio National's "The Science Show." I understand he figure was meant as a long term historic average. Fingers crossed that science can significally push battery performance in the next 12-18 months as the worlds health depends on advances like these.

Fully agree, there's many exciting things in the works and a lot of great tech is being traded off against practical limits. So much cool stuff going on and hard to tell where the next leapfrog pro/prosumer advancement might come..

Battery density for legacy Ni/Cd and Ni/MH has barely shifted in 15 years but Li-ion has more than doubled, although I suspect we'll hit some peak practical performance ceilings there without it being augmented with other innovations or replaced with something entirely new... and maybe it's not just about capacity, but charging times. Here's an aluminum ion battery that can be charged in just 60 seconds..

Imagine a bunch of hot swappable batteries in a Redvolt size/weight that can each charge in 15-20s!

Lack of Sidehandle (especially with power in it) has me on the NO side of Weapon purchase. I can't imagine life without it. I use the buttons, form factor, and power, all day, every day.

Same.

Till that's sorted, I to am not moving.

Small, Light weight 6k horsepower is why bought into RED.

Not saying Weapon doesn't answer a swag of other needs, but this is my main want.

I'm sure its coming. Just have to wait and see.

XL-module, Side-Kick, Dual-Outrigger-Handle (i hope there comes a Weapon version with button(s) soon)... Yes, thats not a replacement for the SH, but it's a small and workable solution. I could survive with that (and miss the SH every day). So the lack of a SH wouldn't hold me back from upgrading, especially not if i was planning to move to VV.

But seriously, to me that's the one big question-mark since NAB. I don't understand why there isn't a new SH right from the beginning, not even a real announcement. To me it's the most important addon for my Scarlet. I remember exactly how much things changed when i received it. The sensor-box with LCD on top turned into a camera. ;) It NEVER EVER left the brain since then. It offers the smartest combination of controlling, powering and holding the camera.

yep. Running a Ronin is much easier with a side handle battery than any other solution.
As soon as the shot is done we go back to the stand, hit 'Motor Kill' and plug in a V-Mount on a long cable. Keeps the sensor warm and ready to shoot, balanced, until the next lens change.

we do the same

Have there been any updates on the side handle? With Weapon orders well underway, I assume one has been or is being released soon? Preferably with a redvolt!

Completely understand those who have them wanting to be able to continue using them. But I think the power should progress with the camera. That is, I think WE_PuN, especially 8k, will attract many new RED converts (RAVEN too, perhaps) and this is the perfect opportunity for RED to upgrade its battery solution.

Those with Redvolts will just have to sell off their stash to Epic and Scarlet owners and move to a better solution. To me it seems this is one of the least expensive changeovers between the two platforms.

To carry this a little further, I wish the new side handle had a place to load a "battery cartridge" that you could fill with Li rechargeables off the shelf. That puts RED out of the side handle battery provider business (except as re-branded Li AA or C or even D batteries) and allows them to concentrate on really important stuff, like affordable Laser Projector. '-)

Batteries can be upgraded without changing the form-factor. I think it's safe to assume REDVOLTs have a future on DSMC2.0 bodies. There is support for both types of batteries. Only the SH with a REDVOLT slot is missing.

For me, please not another formfactor. Another charger and battery-type in the bag. However, the battery-compartment of a SH could be swappable (a bit like the audio-department of the WEAPON REDVOLT Expander).

My experience is that Redvolts are too heavy for a side handle. A smaller (yet still powerful) power source makes the We_Pun form factor lighter weight. I used to carry around 4 of the Redvolts in a vest and you really become aware of the weight of those things when doing that.

I have often 4-6 redvolts spread over pockets, so i know what you are talking about. ;)

Weight could be reduced too without changing the formfactor. If it makes sense (with newer cells) a thinner REDVOLT maybe too.

I actually like the SH with a REDVOLT in it. It adds some weight, you are right, but it also helps to balance the cam and works nicely for handheld. I think with a lighter body the weight would even less of an issue.

Maybe the SH we already saw has an interchangeable battery-compartment? ;)

Good points, but for me the form factor changing to a small round would be ideal. Think of the handles for most of the handheld solutions... round... Pistol grip would be a better shape, though, and maybe would create space to wire in the buttons, rocker arm or 4 way toggle to manipulate the camera.

I'm still wondering what has to come off the present setup to mount a side handle, electronically. Is it to be wireless? Then it could be used as a REDmote from off the camera.

The dream of having a detachable Side Handle for Weapon that is also a wireless REDMOTE style controller is admirable, but I think lost and not necessarily the best use of resources. Mainly due to the fact that Weapon has WiFi built right in, which means you can control it with your cell phone.

Obviously the Side Handle will mount where the SIDEKICK is on Weapon. There's a lot of ways to go about that and I have a sneaky suspicion we'll be seeing what RED has come up with pretty soon.

Personally I just want a handle that is rigid, has customize-able buttons, and is somewhat more ergonomically comfortable than the previous design.

Very curios to see their mounting solution. Completely agree on that last statement.

I really would just love a battery that was about 1/2" thick which was a weapon module you could stick on the back of the camera. That would be super slick. I probably wouldn't get a sidehandle as I only use the sidehandle as a hotswap for the most part.

For me i want a side handle with the same functionality of the current one on Epic. Nothing more, nothing less- allow control of lenses (with iris controls), of scroling Through menus, of allowing quick changes and camera control.

Little things: i like the (touch-)screen on the PhaseOneXF, so replacing the LCD with an OLED would be nice.
