  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ET Weapon Side Handle Feedback

Does anyone have any official ET news on the progress of this little beast?

For me i want a side handle with the same functionality of the current one on Epic. Nothing more, nothing less- allow control of lenses (with iris controls), of scroling Through menus, of allowing quick changes and camera control.

It would be nice to have EF lens "focus wheel" in addition to AF button

Does anyone have any news on this? We sold our beloved sidehandle and dearly hope there's some kind of equiv in the works for Weapon...

Appreciate any news if anyone has any on this or any other alternative. Thanks!

I'll openly admit to a certain degree of heartbreak if the ET solution ultimately becomes vaporware; half because the Sidehandle looked after us so much on our Dragon, and half because it's hard to imagine a camera ecosystem as evolutionary as Weapon w/out such an option.. yeah, we love tactile, even though the Wifi/smartphone/app dev/foolcontrol etc. ecosystem is spawning amazing alternatives... still think a trigger grip with core camera control functionality is a beautiful thing (esp for owner/op/solo/etc.)...

I am not fan of using red volt. Please let us use Sony BPU on it. It will last 1 and a half hour at 60 wh, 2 and half hour at 90 wh
Wow thats a pretty bold request for this site....

Well, it's no secret that redvolts kinda suck, 3rd party batteries are a great idea

Sorry in case this has been mentioned before but I haven't read all 13 pages of comments yet...
Is it confirmed that the sidehandle is discontinued? And if so could anyone provide a link to this information?
I'm assuming the DSMC² Universal Handle (included in the RED RAVEN Base I/O Package) is the replacement of the former Sidehandle
since they already showed the new top handle and the new outdrigger handle..

Also RED is keep pushing the stills for motion sector and are contacting more and more high profile photographers all over the world.
Especially with the 8K Weapon this is going to be a consierable option. And they definitely going to want to have a sidehandle.

Its not clear if ET is still making a side handle or if the Universal handle is what they designed. I just want a great side handle, so if they need to take their time to get it right, so be it.

In thinking more about a redesigned side handle it would be great if it had a swivel function like the one on the Sony FS5. I love shooing low angle and would be stoked to have the ability to rotate the handle 90 degrees forward. If it could go vertical, 45 degrees, and 90 degrees, that would be huge.

Also I want to reinforce just how important it is for me to have a battery in the new handle. It might be a deal breaker if it does not include one.

Agreed on all these points. A battery, even if it's different from the redvolt system (not ideal, but I would certainly remain open to what ET/Red bring to the table), really extends the flexibility of the camera system. If only for hot swapping, extending recording periods when an onboard dies, etc. Also like the swivel idea, if it's not too difficult to implement with electronics/power.

This side handle is the missing link in the DSMC² ecosystem. Getting anxious to see what they ultimately reveal! Also, considering some of the exciting 3rd party vendors coming onto the scene with Weapon options (OMOD, etc), I'd be interested to see if anyone else develops something that may fill any voids if ET isn't able to follow through on some of these different visions of what a side handle should encompass.

Spot on...

Element Technica is currently developing a side handle for the RED WEAPON. They did not have one to show at NAB, but said they were hoping to launch when the camera ships. I thought it would be useful, for those of us that use the existing side handle, to provide feedback to ET on what features we use. I personally use:

1. Record start / stop
2. Rocker - Motion Mount ND increment and decrement
3. dpad - Navigate a menu when using the EVF or a non-Red touchscreen
4. A button - Edge focus
5. B button - Gio Scope
6. C button - 1:1 mode
7. D button - exposure

The design might be baked already, but you never know.

Stumbled upon this today, while shopping for a Rollei.. It looks eerily similar to that mysterious photo Jarred posted, doesn't it? I think I know what the ET side handle will look like now.

Simeon,
not sure where it was originally posted it, but someone reposted earlier in this thread. I remember Jarred originally putting it up with little fanfare and then slyly mentiioning to look at it again to see the new ET side handle.. looks like the Rollei handle! so here you go.

Well, as always blurry, but looks quite good to me so far.
Especially since it looks like there are 4 more inputs on the handle?
Looks like Lemo's or minijacks?
