Element Technica is currently developing a side handle for the RED WEAPON. They did not have one to show at NAB, but said they were hoping to launch when the camera ships. I thought it would be useful, for those of us that use the existing side handle, to provide feedback to ET on what features we use. I personally use:

1. Record start / stop
2. Rocker - Motion Mount ND increment and decrement
3. dpad - Navigate a menu when using the EVF or a non-Red touchscreen
4. A button - Edge focus
5. B button - Gio Scope
6. C button - 1:1 mode
7. D button - exposure

The design might be baked already, but you never know.

I would love it add a focus wheel for electric lens like the one that Mikael Lubtchansky showed.

A extra p-tap and/or Lemo port would be nice, can never have enough power out options for camera.

A big reason I'm not upgrading. The Side Handle is a key component to me. Real head scratcher as to why RED discontinued it. No real interest in ET or other 3rd party gear hanging directly on my RED. You get into conflicting firmware upgrades etc.

Unless things have changed, I'm pretty sure RED owns ET.

What's the point in having a sister company build a key component? Can't be better integrated than something engineered / built in-house. Lack of Weapon RED Side Handle tells me that RED is moving away from targeting Canon 1Dc style form factor to targeting Arri studio cameras. No big - just not my jam

the sidehandle with redvolt capability made my epic for me, cant imagine running a camera without one....if they arent going to make a new one that holds a redvolt, maybe an adapter plate so the old one can work??

I think it's fine that others are building components. Problem is, you can't use that 5K credit on it. Also, I use the SH with RedVolt a lot on MoVI and also for quick stuff. Just don't see the Jetpack working for gimbal stuff. I like the lighter weight of the Weapon thus far, just a hard sell to give up a pretty robust ecosystem that developed around the Epic Dragon body.

Hopefully the new SH incarnation will be good and hold a Redvolt.

Maybe the Sidehandle can serve as a high speed module that does 120 at 6K FF for bursts of 30 seconds with 3:1 compression then writes that to the Mini Mag after capture, I'll throw that feature request in there.

Agreed, side handle is essential. Really hoping RED's working on a new one. If ETs handle doesn't hold a redvolt, I probably will pass.

Dig the idea of an adapter plate. I really like my Sidehandle just the way it is... But if it has to change and no longer have a redvolt inside... I'd like to be able to control my Motion Mount as well as the Iris. Focus would be nice too, I'm just not sure how to do that right. As well as what the OP said, except I might set my presets differently.

However, I've been thinking about it... with a new smaller side handle rig and the Weapons general weight reduction (over Epic) I think chances are my new setup will end up being roughly the same as an Epic with Sidehandle and Redvolt, but with a small AB battery instead...

Couple ideas:
A handle on either side like the Dual Outrigger, with controls on one. (the right side, or bonus points if you they can make it ambidextrous)
Pass through for the Weapon 7" Touch on either side. (If only one, I prefer the left, don't know about you guys)
Ability to mount the top handle in the middle and pass through the start stop.

Could be pretty badass, no?

+1 I love the way the sidehandle works. That was my only hesitation in purchasing weapon. I'm really really going to miss it.

I agree I love running my Dragon with a Redvolt in my side handle. So great to not have to power down for battery changes!!!

i love the side handle, travelled the world with one in case the rental Co. didn't have one.
I spoke about the missing side handle at NAB to a few of the guy's on the RED stand and all of them said they "love the side handle" I have a feeling something will be available for the WEAPON too.
For me it's:
RED VOLT
-run/stop
-nav wheel
-rocker for Motion Mount stop adj'
-1 for RAW TOGGLE
-2 for EXPOSURE CHECK
-3 for 'RED menus view' press again for 100% black look around to 'frame guide'
I'm sure a nicely moulded handle only will be useful but these non touchscreen shortcuts I'll really miss
everything else 'KEY DISABLED'

8. RedVolt compartment... you forgot it!!!

i dunno, I'd rather it be slimmer and not contain a redvolt compartment.

And function more for control(gun trigger) and handling.
