  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ET Weapon Side Handle Feedback

You're assuming Weapon's body design and general feature set was locked down a year ago. Which it wasn't.

Will all of the new Weapon modules be shipping this summer when the Weapon upgrades happen?

That's perhaps the most impossible question to answer as I think Weapon will be inspiring many new products as time goes on.

That said, it sounds like ET is working hard to get the essentials ready for Weapon's launch summer 2015.

Hopefully enough modules will be released by Red with the brain to support a production ready camera this summer.

I've got two Weapon upgrades paid for......The ability to hot swap and hand hold using a side handle of sorts is vital to me. If that's not going to happen.........maybe it's not meant to be.

I'm sure someone will figure it out. It was a big part of Epic/Scarlet. Someone will surely continue that with Weapon - there's clearly a market for it!

I don't want to have to waste the use of the new sidekick. It should live in harmony with the new sidehandle on the new body. Here is my mockup of what I think the sidehandle should be.

You will see it's like the expander for the back, which wedges between, and allows a pass through for communicate to the camera, like the back. Lets call it the ET Side Handle Expander. The main support wedges between the camera and sidekick display and is held rock solid in place by the four hex screws.. Yay, we get to keep the sidekick on the camera, it doesn't have to live in the box. Here in my mockup the new sidehandle can have be a true side handle, there can be a many different kinds of options. All I want is a simple record button in the handle, but that's just me... the controller buttons live into the expander wedge, remember, you have the sidekick there, also there's an extra monitor mount for the AC to pull focus, gives us a good excuse to buy more of the new monitors. But also you will see a the expander has a flat Lipo battery built into it, an internal RED VOLT which can power the camera for 5-7mins, allowing for hot swapping, which is easily swapped out for a fresh one after a year or so..

+1 for the Redvolt. Even better would be an adapter plate so one can just continue using the current Sidehandle.

Frankly it would be a disaster to have the Weapon Camera released but not the modules. Assuming I have to send in my Dragon camera when I upgrade to the Weapon it needs its modules to allow any monitoring or it can't be used in proffessional scenarios. Fingers crossed both Red and Offhollywood have their modules ready for the cameras delivery

I don't think we'll have that kind of situation, ET says the battery modules will be shipping in June... Would have been nice to have my handheld rig figured out by then but I guess we'll have to wait.
I'd like to see a top plate. I know the Weapon has an integrated top plate, but I don't want to have to send my whole camera in when someone strips a thread on a rental. Also I'd like more mounting points and some on the sides (of the top plate) like we've had for Epic. I've used those often for mounting motor control boxes or video transmitters.
Another thing I've been thinking about is a basic rubber/plastic cap for the new monitor ports. Maybe even a rubber cap for the Lemo end of the Lemo adapters?

I think having the ability to adjust focus, iris and zoom from a side handle would be nice.

At NAB they mentioned the side handle would tilt. Maybe some type of ball joint. I don't recall. It was a long week. :)

I like how the current side handle has the thumb screw to lock in place. No tools required. I do hope the new side handle works in a similar fashion.

Love this idea because then you can move the handle somewhere else just like a Canon or Sony F7 camera.

I love my Side Handle and leave it on all the time. I'll miss it. Adaptor plate or umbilical cord? I hope the new ET handle will house a RedVolt and have as many programmable buttons, rockers, etc. Why there seems to be no way of programming the rocker switch to control audio level is beyond me...seems like that would be the most logical use of the rocker other than controlling iris. I can't control iris with the rocker anyway because all my lenses are PL. RED, please enable this for audio level control in firmware! I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't be possible. ET: please have a rocker or wheel or some such thing on your new handle for audio level control while running and gunning solo.

I have been experimenting with using the PC Sync Terminal on the Side Handle for firing strobes. I have been firing strobes with a Side Handle button while recording continuously, but I haven't figured out a way yet to pop off a single frame while simultaneously firing strobes. There's something to be said for having a gazillion frames to choose from, but I also think there's something to be said for having the eye and the artistry for knowing "THE" moment to fire. ET: please include the PC Sync Terminal for strobes!

ERGONOMICS.

The old side handle was terribly uncomfortable. Arguably worse than the detachable grips from the old Mamiya M645 system. They need to look at modern top level DSLRs (1D X and moreso D4).

dont like ET too much. They seems like slowest company with worst webpage.Just check out their instagram youtube facebook pages, few photos only on instagram and no youtube videos come on guys?
Also prices like double the wood3n camera ones.Element Technica became very inactive after it transformed green logo company.Fels like they are still living in Red One era.
I dont understand why Red pushing ET this much. How many of you guys seen ET fitted Red Epic in last few years? i have seen only one at Element Technica booth 2 years ago.

Yeah it's true, although the products are incredibly solid and smart, their web presence is sad, what up with that

%100 true on making solid products.aks for Red One they did still shines like 1st day.But i dont care anymore if my evf mount lasts more than 5 years since cameras and designs changing every year.would rather buy less solid accessories from half price.

Luckily most don't share this opinion for camera equipment and accessories of this caliber. Also, if your AKS aren't built well resale value (or even the possibility) goes way down. There's also a good amount of entities like rental houses or those who shoot 200+ days out of the year who need gear that is "bulletproof".

ive always thought a larger scroll wheel would be nice... the buttons crammed inside the wheel can be tricky sometimes being so close together
